Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Parrish Art Museum have teamed up to present PubSci at the Parrish, a science and art conversation series that takes place in a pub-style setting. Panelists will engage the audience in an open discussion on intersections of science and art that shape our world.

In this first program, “Illumination: Revealing the Secret Chemistry of Oil Paintings,” scientists and museum staff will discuss how ultra-bright x-rays at Brookhaven Lab’s National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) uncovered the cause of degradation in a 15th-century oil painting. The panelists will describe their ongoing collaboration to better understand artwork degradation and preserve cultural relics.

During this installment of PubSci at the Parrish, the audience will have a chance to chat with:

Silvia Centeno, Research Scientist, Department of Scientific Research, Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met)

Karen Chen-Wiegart, Assistant Professor, Materials Science and Chemical Engineering, Stony Brook University; Beamline Scientist, NSLS-II

Terrie Sultan, Director, Parrish Art Museum

Juergen Thieme, Science Coordinator, Imaging and Microscopy Program, NSLS-II; Adjunct Professor, Geosciences, Stony Brook University

PubSci at the Parrish is a spin-off of PubSci, Brookhaven Lab’s science café and conversation series. PubSci lets you talk with expert scientists over a drink and see the casual side of the cutting-edge research and scientific discovery happening every day at Brookhaven. The series hops around Long Island, covering different topics from the Big Bang to tomorrow’s technologies.
