Take part in a Story Circle at the Parrish Art Museum as part of the 2017 People's State of the Union. No preparation is necessary.

Residents of the East End are invited to share their stories and reflect on the current “state of the union” while mingling with their neighbors and enjoying refreshments. The Story Circle aims to create a space for sharing and listening and to bring our communities together. The circles will be facilitated by moderators. Anyone age 15 and older is invited to participate.

The People’s State of the Union is an annual civic ritual, rooted in the belief that democracy is a conversation, not a monologue.

The Parrish Art Museum will invite poets from the East End to compose poems inspired by the stories shared, to be performed on April 7 at the Parrish.

The Story Circles, initiated by the artists’ collective, “U.S. Department of Arts and Culture” are held nationwide. The stories will be uploaded to an online story portal where they can be shared. Then, inspired by these stories, an invited group of poets will collaboratively compose the Poetic Address to the Nation performed and broadcast live from the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco on March 11.

Space is limited; advance registration required.
