In Memoriam: Frank Wimberley (1926–2025)

The Parrish Art Museum mourns the passing of Frank Wimberley, a true friend to the Museum, a force in his contributions to American abstraction, and a cherished member of the East End artist community. Wimberley was one of the leading voices in the Abstract Expressionist tradition, and his work embodied a lifelong pursuit of experimentation, rhythm, and expressive freedom.
Deeply influenced by jazz, an enduring passion and central motif in his art, Wimberley approached painting with those musical notes in his head and heart, and could often be seen attending jazz performances at the Parrish.
The Parrish Art Museum holds four of Wimberley’s works in its permanent collection, ranging from prints and collages to paintings, and has featured his work in numerous exhibitions over the years. Most recently, his work was selected by Nanette Carter for the 2023 exhibition Artists Choose Parrish, celebrating the Museum’s 125th anniversary, and his work will be included in the Museum’s forthcoming exhibition in 2026 focusing on abstraction with an East End lens, an enduring testament to his influence.
Frank Wimberley’s creative spirit left an indelible mark on generations. We send our deepest condolences to his friends and family. His longtime presence on the East End and in the broader art world will be missed.
