This exhibition will be Pat Steir’s (American, 1938–2026) first major museum presentation since the artist’s death earlier this year. Steir first rose to prominence in the late 1970s for her iconographic canvases and immersive installations, and the rigorous pouring technique she developed in the late 1980s, in which she harnessed the forces of gravity and gesture. Informed by a deep engagement with art history and Eastern philosophy, Steir constantly pushed boundaries through material exploration and experimentation. The exhibition will feature a selection of Steir’s Waterfall paintings of the 1990s, the Color Wheel (2018–2019), in which the artist explored the interaction of complimentary colors; recent oil compositions; drawings and monoprints.
