Conceived in collaboration with Pat Steir (American, 1938–2026), this exhibition realizes the artist’s vision for the second rendition of Color Wheel (2018–2019), an immersive installation of monumental paintings in complementary colors. One of Steir’s most ambitious and illuminating late projects, this installation was in the planning stages at the time of the artist’s passing in 2026. It demonstrates Steir’s mastery of her materials and her lifelong research of the possibilities of color and perception through her singular process of painting.
This exhibition also brings together a selection of Steir’s acclaimed waterfall paintings from the 1990s, as well as recent works in this signature style for which she is widely recognized. In the late 1980s, Steir began to approach painting with a conceptual position of non-intention, seeking what could be revealed by deliberately relinquishing control of the painting’s formal outcome. Starting her brushstrokes from high on a ladder, and later on a mechanical lift, she allows the paint to cascade according to gravity and lets nature and our perception form a waterfall in time.
