Professional Development: Art and Language Writing Workshop

December 10, 2019, 9:30 am - 2:30 pm

Art and Language Workshops at the Parrish Art Museum and The Watermill Center

Spend the day mining connections between art and language with two art-inspired poetry workshops.

The day will begin at The Watermill Center where Bridgehampton Middle and High School ELA Teacher Tom House will lead a compressed version of an Ekphrastic Poetry Writing Workshop. This lesson is from a unit he has taught in his Creative Writing and AP Literature courses which has incorporated a day-long field trip to the Watermill Center. At the culmination of the unit, students hone a free verse poem inspired by an artwork or object and have the opportunity to get feedback in a relaxed sharing circle and to publish their poems in electronic and print anthologies.  In the afternoon, the workshop will continue at the Parrish Art Museum. Museum Educator Wendy Gottlieb and Tuckahoe Common School ELA Teacher Kerry Terry will present their collaborative ode lesson inspired by a work of art in the Parrish’s permanent collection. Participants will then create illustrated odes based on a work of their choice!
