Fashion—especially haute couture, which is handmade and not mass-produced—is sometimes regarded as art. Certainly, a classic Balenciaga evening dress displayed on a pedestal
or in a glass case in a museum has some of the “aura” of a work of art, although it was produced within the fashion system, not the art world.

Dr. Valerie Steele, director of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, will explore how the exhibition of fashion in museums has contributed to blurring the line between art and fashion. Her lecture, featuring stunning images, will address the complicated relationship between fashion and art, asking: Who gets to decide whether fashion is art?

Friday nights are made possible, in part, by the generous support of The Corcoran Group, Bridgehampton National Bank, and Sandy and Stephen Perlbinder. Modern Luxury's BEACH Magazine is the media sponsor for Friday nights.
