Open House

Panelist Kathy Engel at the May Day Moratorium at NYU

Join us for a panel discussion and activities based on the theme art, collaboration, and community as part of a free, public Open House on Sunday, May 21.

Art, Community, and Collaboration: An East End Discussion: 1–2 pm

The panel will consider the role the arts can play on the East End to address urgent and ongoing issues, invite dialogue, and create space for building community, confronting tough challenges and divisions, and collaborating. East End artists, activists, and art professionals Georgette Grier-Key, Darlene Charneco, and Jeremy Dennis will join moderator Kathy Engel (poet, activist, Chair and Associate Arts Professor, Department of Art & Public Policy, Tisch School of the Arts, NYU ) to consider current and past issues of power, exclusion, identity, and community.

Community Activities: 2–4 pm

Q&A with panelists, bilingual gallery discussions, printmaking, music, and light refreshments follow the panel.

The entire community is invited to the panel, which will be of particular interest to artists, educators, activists, and anyone interested in the intersection of creativity and collaboration. At the discussion, panelists will speak briefly about their current activities and Engel will pose questions to them including: What is the relationship between what you create, your community, and the world? What is your greatest challenge at this moment as an artist and a conscious, engaged person?

For the remainder of the afternoon, guests may stop into the studio to create mixed-media prints using stenciling, collagraph, and monoprinting techniques, participate in interactive gallery discussions, and enjoy light refreshments and world music and reggae spun by DJ J.Til.

Please register here for the panel discussion.
