Under the Radar was a temporary installation, composed of thousands of ferrite magnets, situated on an asphalt strip adjacent to Camp Hero State Park’s decommissioned radar tower. Artist Alice Hope is known for her experiments with metals and magnetism, and selected this site for its electromagnetic history, obsolescent military architecture, and the curious attraction it holds for conspiracy theorists. Located at the tip of Long Island, Camp Hero has a long history as a strategic military site as far back as the Revolutionary War, and throughout WWII and the Cold War. The monolithic radar, built in 1960, formed part of the SAGE early warning system, one of the first telecom computer networks, and is the only surviving example of its kind registered as a National Historic Place.
