SUMMARY:Curator-Led Tour | Abstract Expressionism: The East End\, 1940 to Today
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nFree for Members | $10 Guests of Member | $15 for Resident Benefits PassHolders | $30 Adults | Free for Students & Children \nJoin us for a special tour of Abstract Expressionism: The East End\, 1940 to Today\, led by Associate Curator and Publications Manager Kaitlin Halloran. \nAdvance registration is recommended. Limited spaces will be available at the door. \n  \nAbout the Exhibition\nFor centuries\, Long Island’s East End has been a hub of artistic innovation and cultural exchange\, where artists have found inspiration in the region’s landscape and thriving arts community. Abstract Expressionism\, while a movement established and developed in New York\, had immeasurable significance on the East End of Long Island—taking shape in the summer of 1945 with Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner establishing their home base in Springs\, NY. Abstract Expressionism: The East End\, 1940 to Today examines how the Abstract Expressionist movement flourished on the East End\, highlighting the many voices who contributed to the genre. \n \nAbstract Expressionism: The East End\, 1940 to Today is part of the Museum’s USA250: Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness\, a year-long program organized in response to the United States’ semiquincentennial in 2026. The USA250 exhibition series will reflect on the nation’s history and founding values\, examine our present moment\, and imagine new ways of moving forward\, while recognizing the contributions of regional artists to the broader landscape of American art and culture. Responding to language in the Declaration of Independence that states “liberty” as one of the inalienable rights\, Abstract Expressionism: The East End\, 1940 to Today recognizes the contributions of regional artists to the broader landscape of American art and culture while pursuing their own freedom of expression. \nAbstract Expressionism: The East End\, 1940 to Today is organized by Kaitlin Halloran\, Associate Curator and Publications Manager. \nExhibition Support\nAbstract Expressionism: The East End\, 1940 to Today is made possible thanks to leadership support from Kenneth C. Griffin and Griffin Catalyst and the generous support of Sherri and Darren Cohen; Ellen Katz; the National Endowment for the Arts; Berry Campbell Gallery\, New York; Evanne & Edward Gargiulo; Helen Frankenthaler Foundation; Amy and Steven Horowitz; Wolf Kahn Foundation; Lauren and Steven P. Schwartz; IFPDA Foundation; Suzi and David Cordish; and Fred Schmeltzer. \n\n\n \nThe Parrish Art Museum’s programs are made possible\, in part\, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature\, and by the property taxpayers from the Southampton Union Free School District and the Tuckahoe Common School District.

Martin\, Carl Bernstein\, Eleanor Heartney\, Seth Barrish\, Joe Fig\, Jérôme Neutres\, and Molly Ringwald\, Will Ryman is the first monograph on an artist whose theatrical sculptures elevate the grit and absurdity of everyday life into monumental\, thought-provoking installations. \nAbout Will Ryman\nWidely recognized for his sculptures and public art installations\, Will Ryman work is filled with an acute theatricality that harkens back to his early career as a playwright. The artist’s ongoing interest in literature\, philosophy\, and the Theatre of the Absurd manifests in his playful investigation of the folly of existence and our shared search for meaning and resolve. Material and subject are of equal importance for Ryman\, whose work reveals his intuitive approach to sculpting diverse materials into expressive forms that examine essential aspects of the human experience. \nWill Ryman (American\, b. 1969) lives and works in New York. Selected museum exhibitions and public art installations include Rites of Spring\, LongHouse Reserve\, East Hampton (2019—2021); Pac-Lab and Sisyphus\, Sculpture Park at Art Omi\, Ghent\, New York (2020); Will Ryman: La Villette\, Parc de La Villette\, Paris (2018); Cadillac\, College for Creative Studies\, Detroit (2017); Bird\, Flatiron Plaza\, New York (2013); Desublimation of the Rose\, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden\, Coral Gables (2011); Rose\, The Phillips Collection\, Washington\, D.C. Solo exhibitions at CHART include New York\, New York (2022) and Dinner III (2020); solo shows at Kasmin Gallery include Two Rooms (2015) and America (2013).
