Salvation: Joe Pintauro's Metropolitan Operas

This evening's program is full.

Salvation is the world premiere of a fully-staged, contemporary musical theater piece based on three one-acts by playwright Joe Pintauro, adapted and set to music by composer/director Kevin Jeffers. Merging classical and modern musical theater styles, Jeffers directs a cast of six New York-based singers and provides piano accompaniment.

Jeffers closely aligned his adaptation with Pintauro’s scripts, adding an original song as an introduction. The music blends the dramatic realism and rhythmic drive of contemporary musical theater with the melodic classical vocal style. Pintauro’s plays are selections from Metropolitan Operas: a collection of 27 short one-acts by the Sag Harbor resident whose play Men’s Lives launched the opening of the Bay Street Theatre in 1992.

In Rex, a woman driving home from a transformative Buddhist retreat near her Hamptons home accidentally hits and kills a pheasant. She takes the sacrifice back to her SoHo apartment, roasts it, and encourages her vegetarian husband to eat it so it may re-enter the life stream. Birds in Church is the story of Father Robbie, a priest going through a crisis of faith who experiences an inexplicable encounter in St. Joseph’s Cathedral. He engages his friend, Father Tim, who has a practical solution for the two parakeets flying around the church; but Robbie remains committed to seeking and grasping the significance of the mystical event. In Rules of Love, a beautiful single woman has been having a protracted affair with an unavailable man, who informs her he isn’t able to move the relationship forward. She takes confession, seeking the guidance of her priest as she unravels her involvement and the plot twists.

Any seat not filled by 6:30 pm will be released to those on the wait list. Suitable for ages 13 and older.
