December 8 & 9
This workshop is a two-day overview of encaustic painting. Participants will learn the fundamentals of working in this ancient technique of hot wax and pigment. The class will explore rudimentary to complex two-dimensional methods of manipulating hot wax while learning how to melt, mix, and apply it to create smooth and textured surfaces. Incising the wax, collage, and transfers will also be sampled.
In addition, this class will discuss the necessary tools, methods, and safe handling of hot wax painting. Through demonstrations, discussions, and exploration, students will develop a basic knowledge of encaustic, which is simultaneously frustrating and satisfying to learn. They will also glimpse and be inspired by the endless possibilities of this beautiful material.
