SUMMARY:Outdoor Black Film Festival: Shaina and My Father the Mover
DESCRIPTION:$15 | $5 Parrish Members | Friends of BHCCRC\nFree for Students and Children \nREGISTER \nJoin us for the second annual Black Film Festival with award-winning feature films and shorts that raise awareness about mental health and the impact of gentrification specific to Black communities\, while depicting life-affirming personal stories of hope\, resilience\, and overcoming adversities. Co-presented in collaboration with The Bridgehampton Child Care & Recreational Center\, the films were selected by a committee representing both organizations as well as The Witness Project of Long Island and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services\, Office of Minority Health. \n7 pm\nA special tour of Tomashi Jackson: The Land Claim is offered before the screening by Senior Curator Corinne Erni who organized the exhibition. Space on the tour is limited and for Black Film Festival attendees only\, first-come-first-served. Advance registration for the tour is strongly recommended and can be found here. \nTomashi Jackson: The Land Claim features newly created work by multimedia artist Tomashi Jackson in painting\, sound\, photography\, and archival materials that centers on the experiences—past and present—of communities of color on Long Island’s East End. The artist’s extensive research included in-depth interviews with members of Black\, Latinx\, and Indigenous communities in the area\, including BHCCRC Executive Director Bonnie Michelle Cannon. \n8 pm\nQ&A with Director Julia Jansch\, followed by the screening \nMy Father the Mover\n2020\, 13 minutes\, South Africa\nDirector: Julia Jansch\nAlatha’s father calls himself a “Mover.” Using African electronic Gqom beats\, he motivates kids in Khayelitsha\, South Africa\, to find their superpowers. However\, Alatha is still looking for her own powers. In a moment together\, this is all about to change. The film won the Grand Jury Award at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2020 and was accepted into numerous other Oscar-qualifying festivals\, including Palm Springs\, Flickers’ Rhode Island\, Heartland\, Cleveland\, Amdocs\, OFF\, Florida\, Bermuda and more. \nShaina\n2020\, 97 minutes\nDirector: Beautie Masvaure\nShine is a teenager in Zimbabwe who has a knack for making something out of nothing and could have a promising future as an engineer\, except for the fact that she doesn’t believe in herself. When she and her best friends Faro\, Stella\, and Busi are faced with a host of grown-up problems—loss of loved ones\, overdue exam fees and the curse of “blessers”—they come close to giving up. Will Shine and her friends be able to overcome their circumstances\, or will they admit defeat in the face of adversity? Their story is one of forgiveness and of friendship\, of creating a new family from the people who love you\, and of the very real power to be found in girls supporting girls. \n  \nAll sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable.\nThe event takes place outdoors\, please bring your own chairs\, no Museum seating is available.\nYou must wear a mask to access the event. Face coverings must be worn when in aisles or moving through spaces.\nNo outside food or drink is permitted. Individually packaged food and drinks will be available for purchase through the cafe vendor\, Elegant Affairs.\nRestrooms will be open during the event. Hand sanitizer and wipes will be available. The Parrish is being regularly disinfected for the safety of our staff and visitors.\nNo pets are allowed on the Museum grounds or in the galleries.\n  \nFriday Nights at the Parrish are made possible\, in part\, by Presenting Sponsor:\n\nAdditional support provided by The Corcoran Group and Sandy and Stephen Perlbinder.
