DESCRIPTION:What We See\, How We See is a seven-part exhibition that contextualizes work by a variety of artists through the lens of how they see and interpret the world around them. Individual galleries based on specific themes feature paintings\, works on paper\, photographs\, and sculpture\, opening with the diverse image making of artists Richard Prince\, Dorothea Rockburne\, and David Salle\, among others. Circles\, Squares\, and Squiggles explores abstract gestures through works by Jennifer Bartlett\, Willem de Kooning\, and Perle Fine; Portraits by Chuck Close\, Till Freiwald and others reveal their subjects in larger than life paintings; and American Landscapes highlights work from the Parrish’s renowned holdings. Two galleries bring to light bodies of work by single artists\, from the tragic-comic world view of Saul Steinberg (a major gift from the Saul Steinberg Foundation that comprises works on paper\, wallpaper and fabric)\, to the joyful imagery of Tom Slaughter.

Ticket purchasers for the online screening will receive a link to watch the film at any time during a one-week window\, September 23 through September 30.\nREGISTER TO VIEW THE FILM ONLINE\n2019\, Documentary\, 85 minutes\nDirector/Producer: Alysa Nahmias \nIn 1937\, László Moholy-Nagy came to Chicago to start the New Bauhaus\, an art institute that aimed to pioneer the development and dissemination of modern design. The film’s narrative weaves original interviews with archival footage\, voiceover\, and stylized filming featuring Hans-Ulrich Obrist. The result is a new perspective view of a man who was ahead of his time and is increasingly relevant in today’s contemporary art and design discourses. Following recent retrospectives of Moholy-Nagy’s work at major museums\, this film offers a more accessible and intimate\, emotional journey through his life and his work as an artist\, designer\, visionary\, and teacher. Moholy-Nagy believed that designing was “not a profession but an attitude\,” he brought together art students and design students—something unheard of at the time—and challenged them to look at the world differently. \nThe screening is preceded by a conversation with executive producer Marquise Stillwell; producer\, cinematographer\, and designer/animator Petter Ringbom; and co-producer Ashley Lukasik; moderated by András Szántó\, author\, cultural strategist\, and Art Basel Conversations host. \nAlysa Nahmias\, Director\nAlysa Nahmias is an award-winning filmmaker and founder of the Los Angeles-based production company Ajna Films. Alysa’s debut feature\, Unfinished Spaces\, won a 2012 Independent Spirit Award\, numerous festival prizes\, and is in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art\, New York. Alysa recently directed and produced The New Bauhaus (2019)\, and her producing credits include the Emmy-nominated and Sundance award-winning Unrest (2017) directed by Jennifer Brea. Her films have been distributed on platforms such as Netflix\, PBS and HBO. Alysa is the lead creative advisor for Film Independent’s Global Media Makers Documentary Track\, and she is a 2019 Sundance Momentum Fellow.

DESCRIPTION:Held on Mondays\, 10:30 am to 12:30 pm \n  \nDevelop your drawing skills in weekly classes led by teaching artist Linda Capello. Participants will practice drawing male and female models through gesture sketches and longer duration observation. All skill levels are welcome. Participants are asked to provide their own dry media supplies. \n$30 | $25 Members per class \nREGISTER \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-registration is required. Enrollment is limited to 10 total students. All tickets are sold online only. No sales at the door. All sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable. You must wear a face covering to enter the Museum.  \nLinda Capello is a master of figure drawing. A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology\, she worked in the NYC fashion industry for over 20 years. She states\, “All I have ever wanted to do was draw\, and all I have ever wanted to draw were people. I am a classically trained anatomist\, but instead of the rigid\, mechanical representation of muscle\, bone and flesh\, I look for the subtlety of the line; the strength and sensuality of the thick\, thin and lost line. The curve of the neck and arch of the spine speak volumes.”

SUMMARY:Alicia Longwell in Conversation with Painter Lucien Smith
DESCRIPTION:Join Chief Curator Alicia Longwell and abstract painter Lucien Smith\, whose 10 large-scale paintings from his 2013 Southampton Suite are currently on view\, in the Lichtenstein Theater for an illustrated talk\, which will also be live-streamed online. Seating in the theater is limited with socially distanced seating. Registration is required. \nLucien Smith (b.1989) is best known for his process-based works that employ both accidental and improvisational marks to create loose\, all-over compositions. Organized by Alicia Longwell\, Lucien Smith: Southampton Suite brings the artist’s Rain Paintings series to conclusion with the 10 large-scale paintings created in a plein air studio that he constructed on the East End during the summer of 2013. With the 9 x 7 ft acrylic on unprimed canvas Southampton Suite paintings\, the artist created an immersive environment that continues his quest to “. . .replicate a natural process with manmade tools.” The ten works on view here from 2013 have never been shown as a group. \nSmith’s paintings\, made by filling an empty fire extinguisher with paint and spraying the canvas\, became widely known soon after his 2011 graduation from Cooper Union. What appealed to Smith was the way he was able to replicate a natural process—rain—with a manmade tool. For the first Rain Paintings series\, Murmur of the Heart\, he used blue and yellow paint; after this initial investigations he began to use a monochromatic approach\, taking a cue from the traditional depiction of rain in Japanese woodblock prints. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is required.\nAll tickets are sold pre-event and online only. No sales at the door. All sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable.\nThe event takes place in the Lichtenstein Theater with limited\, socially distanced seating.\nYou must wear a mask throughout the entire program. \nRestrooms will be open during the event. DESCRIPTION:On August 20\, 2020\, the Parrish opened Field of Dreams\, our inaugural sculpture exhibition created to extend the galleries outdoors and activate the Museum’s meadows with work that engages and responds to the Parrish’s architecture and landscape. The exhibition series is part of the Museum’s new Art in the Meadow initiative that enlivens the grounds with performances\, projections\, and works of art. \nField of Dreams outdoor sculpture exhibition is open and free to the public daily\, from 11 am–5 pm. Visitors are asked to observe social distancing practices and are required to wear masks on Museum property.

DESCRIPTION:Class is fully enrolled \n\nSaturdays\, October 3\, 10\, 17\, and 24\, 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm \nArt educator Wendy Gottlieb guides students to create pottery and study the history of ceramics. Hand-built pottery techniques will include coil\, slab\, and sculpture. All work will be fired. \n$120 for the series | $90 Members for the series \n
