SUMMARY:What We See\, How We See
DESCRIPTION:What We See\, How We See is a seven-part exhibition that contextualizes work by a variety of artists through the lens of how they see and interpret the world around them. Individual galleries based on specific themes feature paintings\, works on paper\, photographs\, and sculpture\, opening with the diverse image making of artists Richard Prince\, Dorothea Rockburne\, and David Salle\, among others. Circles\, Squares\, and Squiggles explores abstract gestures through works by Jennifer Bartlett\, Willem de Kooning\, and Perle Fine; Portraits by Chuck Close\, Till Freiwald and others reveal their subjects in larger than life paintings; and American Landscapes highlights work from the Parrish’s renowned holdings. Two galleries bring to light bodies of work by single artists\, from the tragic-comic world view of Saul Steinberg (a major gift from the Saul Steinberg Foundation that comprises works on paper\, wallpaper and fabric)\, to the joyful imagery of Tom Slaughter.

SUMMARY:TALK: The Artist's View: Artists Choose Artists
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin selected artists as they discuss their work featured in Artists Choose Artists. \nMary Boochever’s (American\, b. 1954) painting\, sculpture\, and installations draw the viewer into the immediacy of the color experience. In developing her own color language\, the artist has explored sources as diverse as the Kabala and Goethe’s Color Theory. Born into a Washington\, D.C. Foreign Service family\, Boochever later studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich. She has taught at the School of Visual Arts\, Suffolk Community College in Riverhead\, and Lacoste School of the Arts in France\, and has guest-lectured at Yale University. The artist moved to Long Island in 1993 and currently lives and works in Sag Harbor. \nInspired by the seasons\, tides\, and marine and wildlife at the shore\, Anne Seelbach’s (American\, b. 1944) work explores the mysteries of nature where earth and water meet. The artist received a BA from NYU and an MFA from Hunter College\, City University of New York. She has taught at the University of Rhode Island\, Northeastern University and Emerson College in Boston\, The Newark Museum\, the Parrish Art Museum\, and the Victor D’Amico Institute of Art. Seelbach lives and works in North Haven\, NY. \nMaster printmaker\, painter\, educator and author Dan Welden (American\, b. 1941) has been making prints and works on paper for over 50 years. His work has been shown in over 80 international solo exhibitions in museums and galleries and over 700 group exhibitions in the U.S.\, Europe\, China\, Japan\, Switzerland\, Australia\, New Zealand\, and Peru. Welden is represented in public and private collections nationwide including the Amity Art Foundation\, Darien\, CT; Baltimore Museum of Art; Portland Museum of Art; Temple University\, Philadelphia; and Cape Cod Museum of Art\, Dennis\, MA\, among many others. He lives and works in Sag Harbor\, NY. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtists Choose Artists is the Parrish Art Museum’s triennial exhibition that highlights the dynamic relationships among the multi-generational artist community of Long Island’s East End\, encouraging mentorship and conversations between artists at varying stages in their careers. \n\n\nWatch 2016 Artists Choose Artists \n\nLearn more about Artists Choose Artists 2019 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Artists Choose Artists exhibition is made possible\, in part\, thanks to the generous support of the Robert Lehman Foundation; The Evelyn Toll Family Foundation; Jacqueline Brody; Herman Goldman Foundation; Linda and Gregory Fischbach\, and Fred Schmeltzer. \n\nFriday nights are made possible\, in part\, by Presenting Sponsor:\nAdditional support provided by The Corcoran Group and Sandy and Stephen Perlbinder.\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:FILM & PERFORMANCE: 4 LITTLE GIRLS: MOVING PORTRAITS OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
DESCRIPTION:$12 | Free for Members\, Students\, and Children \nORDER TICKETS \n  \nJoin us for a special program\, including film and live dance performance\, by the Edge School of the Arts (ESOTA)\, co-presented with the Hamptons United Methodist Church and with support from the Jerome Foundation for Jerome Artist Fellow\, Kerri Edge. \n4 Little Girls: Moving Portraits of the American Civil Rights Movement is an experimental narrative film by Kerri Edge that infuses historical authenticity\, contemporary dance movements (tap\, modern dance\, hip hop\, and ballet) choreographed to spoken word and 60’s protest songs to recant the horrific story of Addie Mae Collins\, Denise McNair\, Carole Robertson\, and Cynthia Wesley\, the four young black girls who were violently murdered by the Ku Klux Klan when a bomb exploded in the basement of the Black 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham\, Alabama\, on September 15\, 1963. \nThe story unfolds through the imaginative interpretations of present-day performing arts students whose teacher challenges them to go back in time and recreate the moments leading up to what Martin Luther King Jr. described as\, “one of the most vicious and tragic crimes ever perpetrated against humanity.” \nKerri Edge is an artivist who uses dance and film as vehicles to shed light on issues of social injustice and commemorate the achievements of African American people. She is Artistic Director of the Edge School of the Arts (ESOTA)\, which has dedicated itself to bringing the art and discipline of African American dance to young aspiring artists\, the community\, and international audiences.
