SUMMARY:What We See\, How We See
DESCRIPTION:What We See\, How We See is a seven-part exhibition that contextualizes work by a variety of artists through the lens of how they see and interpret the world around them. Individual galleries based on specific themes feature paintings\, works on paper\, photographs\, and sculpture\, opening with the diverse image making of artists Richard Prince\, Dorothea Rockburne\, and David Salle\, among others. Circles\, Squares\, and Squiggles explores abstract gestures through works by Jennifer Bartlett\, Willem de Kooning\, and Perle Fine; Portraits by Chuck Close\, Till Freiwald and others reveal their subjects in larger than life paintings; and American Landscapes highlights work from the Parrish’s renowned holdings. Two galleries bring to light bodies of work by single artists\, from the tragic-comic world view of Saul Steinberg (a major gift from the Saul Steinberg Foundation that comprises works on paper\, wallpaper and fabric)\, to the joyful imagery of Tom Slaughter.

SUMMARY:Professional Development: Art and Language Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Art and Language Workshops at the Parrish Art Museum and The Watermill Center\nSpend the day mining connections between art and language with two art-inspired poetry workshops. \nThe day will begin at The Watermill Center where Bridgehampton Middle and High School ELA Teacher Tom House will lead a compressed version of an Ekphrastic Poetry Writing Workshop. This lesson is from a unit he has taught in his Creative Writing and AP Literature courses which has incorporated a day-long field trip to the Watermill Center. At the culmination of the unit\, students hone a free verse poem inspired by an artwork or object and have the opportunity to get feedback in a relaxed sharing circle and to publish their poems in electronic and print anthologies.  In the afternoon\, the workshop will continue at the Parrish Art Museum. Museum Educator Wendy Gottlieb and Tuckahoe Common School ELA Teacher Kerry Terry will present their collaborative ode lesson inspired by a work of art in the Parrish’s permanent collection. Participants will then create illustrated odes based on a work of their choice! \nREGISTER \nPlease call 631-283-2118 ext. 121 or email wingfieldc@parrishart.org for more information. \n

SUMMARY:TALK: The Artist's View: Artists Choose Artists
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin selected artists featured in the Artists Choose Artists exhibition\, as they talk about their work in the Lichtenstein Theater\, followed by informal visits and conversations in the galleries. \n\n\nJanet Goleas (selected by Valerie Jaudon)\nBastienne Schmidt (selected by Valerie Jaudon)\nPriscilla Heine (selected by Allan Wexler) \n  \nJanet Goleas (American\, b. 1956) spent most of her formative years in Germany which afforded her a broad view of life and art. She relocated from Europe to California to pursue her art and received a BFA and MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. A writer\, educator and curator\, Goleas focuses on what she describes as “…issues that are often in direct conflict with one another such as depth and flatness\, nature and artifice\, expression and precision\, and spheres and circles.” Her work has been shown at the San Francisco Art Institute; Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery and Sierra Nevada Museum of Art\, NV; Artists Space\, NY; Guild Hall\, Ashawagh Hall\, Sara Nightingale Gallery\, and Kathryn Markel Gallery\, East Hampton; and Galerie Muhlenbusch-Winkelmann\, Germany. \nPriscilla Heine (American\, b. 1956) studied at various institutions including the Arts Students League\, Bennington College\, Parsons School of Design at the New School\, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. Heine has shown her work consistently since earning her BFA from Tufts University in 1979\, participating in solo and group exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art\, the School of Visual Arts\, Emily Harvey Gallery\, and Wally Findlay Galleries\, NY; Heckscher Museum of Art and Islip Art Museum\, Long Island\, NY; Ashawagh Hall and Guild Hall\, East Hampton; and Boston City Hall. Born and raised in New York City\, she lives and works in East Hampton. \nBastienne Schmidt (German\, b. 1961) is a multi-media artist working with photography\, painting\, and large-scale drawings. Being the daughter of an archaeologist influenced her creative process and instilled a desire to organize\, map\, and understand systems through her artwork. Inspired by ancient Greek ceramics\, Japanese woodcuts\, fairytales\, and American pop culture\, her work often incorporates and transforms archetypal shapes. Schmidt’s work is included in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art and the International Center of Photography\, NY; Brooklyn Museum; the Corcoran Gallery of Art\, Washington D.C.; Parrish Art Museum; the Victoria and Albert Museum in London\, and the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris\, among others. Born in Germany and raised in Greece and Italy\, she lives in New York and East Hampton. \n  \nLearn more about Artists Choose Artists 2019 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Artists Choose Artists exhibition is made possible\, in part\, thanks to the generous support of the Robert Lehman Foundation; The Evelyn Toll Family Foundation; Jacqueline Brody; Herman Goldman Foundation; Linda and Gregory Fischbach\, and Fred Schmeltzer.\n\nFriday Nights are made possible\, in part\, by Presenting Sponsor:\nAdditional support provided by The Corcoran Group and Sandy and Stephen Perlbinder.
