DESCRIPTION:Held on Mondays\, 11 am to 1pm  \nFall Series: September 9\, 16\, 23\, 30 October 7 \n11am-1pm \nDevelop your drawing skills in this five-session open studio series facilitated by teaching artist Linda Capello. Participants will practice drawing male and female models through gesture sketches and longer duration observation. All skill levels are welcome. Participants are asked to provide their own dry media supplies. \nDrop-in rates\n$30 | $25 Member per session \n  \nLinda Capello is a master of figure drawing. A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology\, she worked in the NYC fashion industry for over 20 years. She states\, “All I have ever wanted to do was draw\, and all I have ever wanted to draw were people. I am a classically trained anatomist\, but instead of the rigid\, mechanical representation of muscle\, bone and flesh\, I look for the subtlety of the line; the strength and sensuality of the thick\, thin and lost line. The curve of the neck and arch of the spine speak volumes.”

DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin artists Amy Sillman\, Cameron Martin\, and Miranda Lichtenstein in a conversation about Helen Frankenthaler’s work. \nTo view additional programs for Abstract Climates: Helen Frankenthaler in Provincetown click HERE \n  \nThough painting\, drawing\, animation and writing\, Amy Sillman (born in 1955 in Detroit\, MI) has woven together an art practice that is engaged in both material matters and discursive thinking. Her artwork has been widely shown and collected at private and public institutions in the U.S. and Europe\, including MoMA\, The Met\, The Whitney\, LA MoCA\, Portikus in Frankfurt\, Lenbachhaus and the Brandhorst Museum in Munich\, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm\, and The Tate Modern\, London. She has been the recipient of numerous awards\, including a Guggenheim in 2001\, and residencies at The American Academy in Berlin\, The American Academy in Rome\, and The Radcliffe Institute. A traveling mid-career survey show one lump or two\, curated by Helen Molesworth\, opened at the ICA Boston in 2013\, and was accompanied by a major monographic catalogue. More recently\, a monograph was published in 2019 by Lund Humphries/London\, with a long text by the writer and curator Valerie Smith. Active as an educator\, Sillman held a position as Professor at the Staedelschule in Frankfurt from 2014-2019. She is based in New York City and is represented by Gladstone Gallery. \nMiranda Lichtenstein’s work has been exhibited at institutions including the Guggenheim Museum\, New York\, NY; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden\, Washington D.C.; Renaissance Society\, Chicago\, IL; Musee Marmottan Monet\, Paris\, France; MASS MoCA\, North Adams\, MA; and the New Museum of Contemporary Art\, New York\, NY.  Solo exhibitions of her work have been held at venues such as the UCLA Hammer Museum\, Los Angeles; Whitney Museum of American Art; and most recently at the Museum of Contemporary Art\, Tucson\, AZ. Her work is represented in numerous public collections including Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York\, NY; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden\, Washington\, DC; Baltimore Museum of Art\, Baltimore\, MD; Henry Art Gallery\, Seattle\, WA; and the Neuberger Museum\, Purchase\, NY.  She is Associate Professor of Photography at Mason Gross School of the Arts\, Rutgers University and lives in Brooklyn\, NY. \nIn addition to solo shows at galleries in the United States\, Japan and Europe\, Cameron Martin has been the subject of one-person exhibitions at the Saint Louis Art Museum; the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa\, Oklahoma; and the University Art Museum at SUNY Albany. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions\, including the 2004 Whitney Biennial. His work is included in many museum collections\, and he has received a Pollock Krasner\, a Joan Mitchell Foundation Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship\, among other awards. In November he will have a two-person exhibition with Gyorgy Kepes at Sikkema Jenkins and Co.\, New York. Martin is co-chair of the painting department in the MFA program at Bard College. He received his BA in Art/Semiotics from Brown University in 1994\, and graduated from the Whitney Independent Study Program in 1996. DESCRIPTION:August 4–October 27\, 2019 \nAbstract Climates: Helen Frankenthaler in Provincetown highlights key examples of Helen Frankenthaler’s work produced during summers spent in that coastal town and underscores their impact on her development as a painter. Beginning with work from the summer of 1950\, the exhibition and accompanying catalogue focus on the artist’s output from the late 1950s through 1971. Abstract Climates illuminates Frankenthaler’s exploration of the relationship between landscape and abstraction\, and offers new insights into the major role her work played in the development of Abstract Expressionism in America. Co-curated by Lise Motherwell\, a stepdaughter of the artist\, and Helen Frankenthaler Foundation Executive Director Elizabeth Smith\, the exhibition was on view at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum in the summer of 2018\, featuring some 30 paintings and works on paper with additional memorabilia from the artist’s life. At the Parrish\, six large-scale paintings not previously included will also be on view.
