Abstract Climates illuminates Frankenthaler’s exploration of the relationship between landscape and abstraction\, and offers new insights into the major role her work played in the development of Abstract Expressionism in America. Co-curated by Lise Motherwell\, a stepdaughter of the artist\, and Helen Frankenthaler Foundation Executive Director Elizabeth Smith\, the exhibition was on view at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum in the summer of 2018\, featuring some 30 paintings and works on paper with additional memorabilia from the artist’s life. Panelists will engage the audience in an open discussion on intersections of science and art that shape our world. \nIn this program\, a scientist\, artists\, and composers will discuss how nanoscience data generated at Brookhaven Lab’s Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) and National Synchrotron Light Source II can be represented in novel ways using different forms of art. In particular\, they will explain how these novel representations can help scientists understand how 3-D nanostructures are organized. DESCRIPTION:  \nAfter PUBSCI AT THE PARRISH join panelist Paul D. Miller a.k.a. DJ Spooky for music and dancing! \nPaul D. Miller\, aka DJ Spooky\, is a composer\, multimedia artist\, and writer whose work immerses audiences in a blend of genres\, global culture\, and environmental and social issues. Miller has collaborated with an array of recording artists\, including Metallica\, Chuck D\, Steve Reich\, and Yoko Ono. His 2018 album\, DJ Spooky Presents: Phantom Dancehall\, debuted at #3 on Billboard Reggae. \nHis large-scale\, multimedia performance pieces include “Rebirth of a Nation\,” Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica\, commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music\, and Seoul Counterpoint\, written during his 2014 residency at Seoul Institute of the Arts. His multimedia project Sonic Web premiered at San Francisco’s Internet Archive in 2019. He was the inaugural artist-in-residency at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s The Met Reframed\, 2012-2013. \nIn 2014\, he was named National Geographic Emerging Explorer. He produced Pioneers of African American Cinema\, a collection of the earliest films made by African American directors\, released in 2015. SUMMARY:Every Picture Tells a Story: Work from the Permanent Collection
DESCRIPTION:November 11\, 2018 to October 6\, 2019 \nEach year\, the Museum creates a new exhibition that contextualizes work and amplifies inherent themes by important artists in the Parrish collection of more than 3\,000 works. This year’s seven-gallery installation\, Every Picture Tells a Story\, presents a series of focused exhibitions that explore the many ways that images carry narrative meaning. \nEvery Picture Tells a Story\, the 2018 Permanent Collection Exhibition\, has been made possible\, in part\, by the generous support of Barbara Slifka; Ellen Cantrowitz\, Garrett and Mary Moran; Charlotte Moss and Barry Friedberg\, Jane and David Walentas\, Marie Samuels\, Per Skarstedt\, Deborah Buck\, and a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.

SUMMARY:Abstract Climates: Helen Frankenthaler in Provincetown
DESCRIPTION:August 4–October 27\, 2019 \nAbstract Climates: Helen Frankenthaler in Provincetown highlights key examples of Helen Frankenthaler’s work produced during summers spent in that coastal town and underscores their impact on her development as a painter. Beginning with work from the summer of 1950\, the exhibition and accompanying catalogue focus on the artist’s output from the late 1950s through 1971. Abstract Climates illuminates Frankenthaler’s exploration of the relationship between landscape and abstraction\, and offers new insights into the major role her work played in the development of Abstract Expressionism in America. Co-curated by Lise Motherwell\, a stepdaughter of the artist\, and Helen Frankenthaler Foundation Executive Director Elizabeth Smith\, the exhibition was on view at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum in the summer of 2018\, featuring some 30 paintings and works on paper with additional memorabilia from the artist’s life. At the Parrish\, six large-scale paintings not previously included will also be on view.
