SUMMARY:Renate Aller: The Space Between Memory and Expectation
DESCRIPTION:March 24–July 28\, 2019 \n\nA focused exhibition of works by the German-born photographer illuminating her exploration of the interrelationship of romanticism\, memory\, and place through dynamic compositions rich with implied narratives. The exhibition features 12 large-scale archival prints in a gallery installation specifically designed to present a compositionally unified environment. Presenting works drawn from ongoing series Ocean | Desert and Mountain Interval\, the exhibition draws together disparate landscapes through the continuity of the horizon line. Dramatic images of the Atlantic Ocean\, vast sand dunes in New Mexico and Colorado\, and the majestic mountain ranges in Alaska\, Switzerland\, Italy\, and Nepal come together to explore “the interval\, the space in between … during which apparently nothing happens\, but without which no change could happen\,” Aller explains. “The Space Between Memory and Expectation is another way to describe this state of stillness and transition.”A part of Parrish Perspectives—a series of concentrated exhibitions that offers the Museum opportunities to respond spontaneously and directly to unique ways of thinking about art\, artists\, and the creative process. In the immersive installation\, seven photographs of dramatic ranges and peaks from Mountain Interval are aligned with five prints from Ocean | Desert—broad expanses of sea and sand. SUMMARY:Film & Talk: Kusama—Infinity\, The Life and Art of Yayoi Kusama
DESCRIPTION:Talk with Terrie Sultan and John Torreano\nOrder Tickets \n$15 | $5 for Members\, Children\, and Students \n  \nPart of The Artist’s Lens\, a new documentary series on artists\, co-presented with Hamptons Doc Fest. Followed by a talk with Parrish Director Terrie Sultan and artist John Torreano. \nNow the top-selling female artist in the world\, Yayoi Kusama overcame impossible odds to bring her radical artistic vision to the world stage. For decades\, her work pushed boundaries that often alienated her from both her peers and those in power in the art world. Kusama was an underdog with everything stacked against her: the trauma of growing up in Japan during World War II\, life in a dysfunctional family that discouraged her creative ambitions\, sexism and racism in the art establishment\, mental illness in a culture where that was particularly shameful and even continuing to pursue and be devoted to her art full time on the cusp of her 90s. In spite of it all\, Kusama has endured and has created a legacy of artwork that spans the disciplines of painting\, sculpture\, installation art\, performance art\, poetry and literary fiction. \nBorn in 1929\, Kusama grew up near her family’s plant nursery in Matsumoto. At 19\, she went to Kyoto to study the traditional Japanese style of painting known as Nihonga. During this time\, she began experimenting with abstraction\, but it was not until she arrived in the United States\, in 1957\, that her career took off. Living in New York from 1958 to 1973\, Kusama moved in avant-garde circles and counted Donald Judd and Eva Hesse among her close friends and is often considered an influence on Andy Warhol and a precursor to Pop art. While honing her signature dot and net motifs\, she developed soft sculpture\, created installation-based works\, and staged Happenings (performance-based events). She created the “Infinity Nets\,” hallucinatory paintings of loops and dots and physical representations of the idea of infinity. She first used mirrors as a multi-reflective device in Infinity Mirror Room—Phalli’s Field\, 1965\, transforming the intense repetition that marked some of her earlier works into an immersive experience. Narcissus Garden\, an installation of hundreds of mirrored balls\, earned Kusama notoriety at the 1966 Venice Biennale\, where she attempted to sell the individual spheres to passersby. \nSince her return to Japan in 1973\, Kusama’s work has continued to appeal to the imagination and the senses of people around the globe as they experience her dizzying walk-in installations\, public sculptures\, and the “Dots Obsessions” paintings in record numbers. Meanwhile\, Kusama continues to create new work every day.

SUMMARY:Renate Aller: The Space Between Memory and Expectation
DESCRIPTION:March 24–July 28\, 2019 \n\nA focused exhibition of works by the German-born photographer illuminating her exploration of the interrelationship of romanticism\, memory\, and place through dynamic compositions rich with implied narratives. The exhibition features 12 large-scale archival prints in a gallery installation specifically designed to present a compositionally unified environment. Presenting works drawn from ongoing series Ocean | Desert and Mountain Interval\, the exhibition draws together disparate landscapes through the continuity of the horizon line. Dramatic images of the Atlantic Ocean\, vast sand dunes in New Mexico and Colorado\, and the majestic mountain ranges in Alaska\, Switzerland\, Italy\, and Nepal come together to explore “the interval\, the space in between … during which apparently nothing happens\, but without which no change could happen\,” Aller explains. “The Space Between Memory and Expectation is another way to describe this state of stillness and transition.”A part of Parrish Perspectives—a series of concentrated exhibitions that offers the Museum opportunities to respond spontaneously and directly to unique ways of thinking about art\, artists\, and the creative process. In the immersive installation\, seven photographs of dramatic ranges and peaks from Mountain Interval are aligned with five prints from Ocean | Desert—broad expanses of sea and sand. SUMMARY:Talk & Book Signing: Bastienne Schmidt\, Grids and Threads
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin artist Bastienne Schmidt in conversation with Parrish Director Terrie Sultan about her new monograph\, Grids and Threads\, followed by a book signing. \nGrids and Threads is a minimalist meditation on the concept of white space and its perception. The book is inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s Three Standard Stoppages in which three imaginary measuring devices underline the arbitrariness to qualify and quantify something. With an introduction written by Parrish Art Museum director Terrie Sultan and arts writer Jacoba Urist\, this monograph documents the latest project by award-winning artist and photographer Bastienne Schmidt. Part one features bird’s-eye photographs of constructed installations of colorful fabric and thread in snow. The second part consists of mixed media works on Arches paper\, where punched grid of 8 x 8 inches is divided into one square inch spaces\, which draw light and shadow onto the white paper. The idea of creating a series of never-ending variation of white squares in a reductive process is related to the artistic search of Agnes Marin and Robert Ryman. The square grid in white is a quiet reflection on the concept of a minimal space; the variations\, of what happens inside of the squares\, play with the thought of absolute freedom and absolute constraint. \n  \nFriday nights are made possible\, in part\, by Presenting Sponsor\, Bank of America.
