DESCRIPTION:What We See\, How We See is a seven-part exhibition that contextualizes work by a variety of artists through the lens of how they see and interpret the world around them. Circles\, Squares\, and Squiggles explores abstract gestures through works by Jennifer Bartlett\, Willem de Kooning\, and Perle Fine; Portraits by Chuck Close\, Till Freiwald and others reveal their subjects in larger than life paintings; and American Landscapes highlights work from the Parrish’s renowned holdings. Two galleries bring to light bodies of work by single artists\, from the tragic-comic world view of Saul Steinberg (a major gift from the Saul Steinberg Foundation that comprises works on paper\, wallpaper and fabric)\, to the joyful imagery of Tom Slaughter.

DESCRIPTION:Held on Mondays\, 10:30 am to 12:30 pm \nDevelop your drawing skills in weekly classes led by teaching artist Linda Capello. Participants will practice drawing male and female models through gesture sketches and longer duration observation. All skill levels are welcome. Participants are asked to provide their own dry media supplies. \n$30 | $25 Members per class \nREGISTER \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-registration is required. Enrollment is limited to 10 total students. All tickets are sold online only. No sales at the door. All sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable. You must wear a face covering to enter the Museum.  \nLinda Capello is a master of figure drawing. A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology\, she worked in the NYC fashion industry for over 20 years. She states\, “All I have ever wanted to do was draw\, and all I have ever wanted to draw were people. I am a classically trained anatomist\, but instead of the rigid\, mechanical representation of muscle\, bone and flesh\, I look for the subtlety of the line; the strength and sensuality of the thick\, thin and lost line. The curve of the neck and arch of the spine speak volumes.”

DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nEnjoy a private tour of the Museum’s inaugural sculpture exhibition\, Field of Dreams\, led by Alicia Longwell\, the Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator.  Afterwards\, Business Members are invited to socialize with light refreshments from the Museum Café. \nField of Dreams presents work by 10 international\, multi-generational artists working in a variety of genres\,  featuring a new installation created for the Museum by interdisciplinary artist Theaster Gates (American\, born 1973)\, a suite of four new sculptures by Jaume Plensa (Spanish\, born 1955); and new works by Parrish collection artist Jim Dine (American\, born 1935). Other collection artists include Roy Lichtenstein (American\, 1923–97)\, Joel Perlman (American\, born 1943)\, and Joel Shapiro (American\, born 1941); as well as sculpture by Max Ernst (French and American\, born Germany\, 1891–1976); and Bernar Venet (French\, born 1941). Two additional monumental works by Isa Genzken (German\, born 1948) and Giuseppe Penone (Italian\, born 1947) will be installed later this fall. \nRain date is Thursday\, November 5.  All registered guests will be informed Wednesday morning should the event be postponed to Thursday due to weather. \nThis event is for Business Members.  Not a Member?  Join or upgrade today! \nSocial distancing will be practiced.  Space is limited for this event and reservations required.

DESCRIPTION:Parrish collection artist Jim Dine (American\, born 1935) discusses his work in Field of Dreams and new projects with Chief Curator Alicia Longwell in an online live-stream.\nInternationally renowned Parrish Art Museum collection artist Jim Dine (American\, born 1935)\, whose work is on view in the Museum’s outdoor exhibition Field of Dreams\, will participate in a live stream illustrated talk with Alicia G. Longwell\, Ph.D.\, The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator on Friday\, November 6\, 5pm. A visionary who was a pioneer of the Happenings movement and integral to the development of Pop art in the 1960s\, Dine will discuss The Hooligan and The Wheatfield (Agincourt)\, as well as current projects and the trajectory of his 60-year career. \nIn his work throughout the decades\, Dine frequently affixed to his canvases everyday objects—largely his personal possessions—such as tools\, rope\, shoes\, clothing\, and even a bathroom sink. He later added gates\, trees\, and Venus de Milo to his repertoire of recurring motifs\, as exemplified in The Wheatfield (Agincourt)\, 1989-2019. It expands Dine’s scope into a monumental assemblage comprising an extensive tractor axle fitted with the objects and icons that have populated his life’s work\, including farm tools\, oars\, animal statuary\, furniture\, and toys. For this new iteration at the Parrish\, Dine extended the framework of the axle and added new found objects. Several iterations of the Venus de Milo—a characteristic trademark of the artist’s practice since the late 1970s—appear in The Wheatfield\, and provide the sole inspiration of The Hooligan (2019)\, on view for the first time. \nAbout Jim Dine\nBorn in Cincinnati in 1935\, Jim Dine relocated to New York in 1959\, where he joined Allan Kaprow\, Claes Oldenburg\, and Robert Whitman in the early stages of the Happenings. In New York\, he exhibited at Judson Gallery (1958 and 1959)\, had his first solo show the Reuben Gallery in 1960\, and was part of many other exhibitions nationwide since that time. Dine has had solo exhibitions in museums in Europe and the United States\, including a major retrospectives at the Whitney Museum of American Art (1970)\, Museum of Modern Art (1978)\, and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York (1999); the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis (1984–85)\, and National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C. (2004). \nIn 1965\, Dine was a guest lecturer at Yale University\, artist-in-residence at Oberlin College\, Ohio\, and a visiting critic at Cornell University a year later. DESCRIPTION:What We See\, How We See is a seven-part exhibition that contextualizes work by a variety of artists through the lens of how they see and interpret the world around them. Individual galleries based on specific themes feature paintings\, works on paper\, photographs\, and sculpture\, opening with the diverse image making of artists Richard Prince\, Dorothea Rockburne\, and David Salle\, among others. Circles\, Squares\, and Squiggles explores abstract gestures through works by Jennifer Bartlett\, Willem de Kooning\, and Perle Fine; Portraits by Chuck Close\, Till Freiwald and others reveal their subjects in larger than life paintings; and American Landscapes highlights work from the Parrish’s renowned holdings. Two galleries bring to light bodies of work by single artists\, from the tragic-comic world view of Saul Steinberg (a major gift from the Saul Steinberg Foundation that comprises works on paper\, wallpaper and fabric)\, to the joyful imagery of Tom Slaughter.

SUMMARY:Life Drawing with Linda Capello
DESCRIPTION:Held on Mondays\, 10:30 am to 12:30 pm \nDevelop your drawing skills in weekly classes led by teaching artist Linda Capello. Participants will practice drawing male and female models through gesture sketches and longer duration observation. All skill levels are welcome. Participants are asked to provide their own dry media supplies. \n$30 | $25 Members per class \nSOLD OUT \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-registration is required. Enrollment is limited to 14 total students. All tickets are sold online only. No sales at the door. All sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable. You must wear a face covering to enter the Museum.  \nLinda Capello is a master of figure drawing. A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology\, she worked in the NYC fashion industry for over 20 years. She states\, “All I have ever wanted to do was draw\, and all I have ever wanted to draw were people. I am a classically trained anatomist\, but instead of the rigid\, mechanical representation of muscle\, bone and flesh\, I look for the subtlety of the line; the strength and sensuality of the thick\, thin and lost line. The curve of the neck and arch of the spine speak volumes.”

DESCRIPTION:Series of four classes: Fridays\, November 13\, 20\, and December 4 and 11 \n10:30 am to 1 pm each day \nLooking at the works from The Parrish collection along with Matisse and the Fauves\, this workshop will explore how to use color\, how to create form\, and how those elements come together to make dynamic work! We’ll work in collage\, single-color painting\, complimentary color painting\, and all kinds of other exciting exercises to explore color and form. DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, November 14\, 21\, December 5\, and 12\, 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm \nArt educator Wendy Gottlieb guides students to create pottery and study the history of ceramics.
