SUMMARY:Exhibition Tour | Led by peter campus
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nJoin other Members for an exclusive gallery tour with artist peter campus and experience campus’s exhibition when the hurly burly’s done\, on view at the Museum\, November 7\, 2021 through February 27\, 2022. campus is a seminal artist in the canons of new media and video art. In a solitary pursuit over the past year\, campus positioned his camera around the shores of Shinnecock Bay\, not far from his home in Patchogue\, NY. The resulting six works\, all to be shown in the exhibition\, invite the viewer to meditate on the sublime beauty of the natural landscape\, while noting the gap between what we perceive\, what the camera records\, and what the artist brings to the fore in the video. \nThe event takes place before the Museum opens. Refreshments will be served in the Cafe following the tour. Come and engage in conversation with peter campus and Parrish Giving Circles Members. \nThis event is intended for Contemporaries Circle Members and above. SUMMARY:Film & Workshop | An Evening With Jeremy Dennis
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n \nJoin Parrish Collection artist and fine art photographer Jeremy Dennis\, member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation\, for an evening-length program featuring a short documentary and conversation about an artist residency he founded and a postcard workshop to draw attention to the sacred land of the Shinnecock Hills. \nIn the documentary\, Ma’s House\, presented as part of the ALL ARTS ongoing initiative The First Twenty\, Dennis discusses the building of Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio\, an artist retreat and communal art space on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton. With the studio\, Dennis aims to provide a safe space for free creativity and healing for BIPOC artists. The film explores the challenges he and his family met while renovating his grandmother’s house and how he hopes the space will serve the community now and in the future. \nDuring the second part of the evening\, visitors are invited to participate in a workshop with the artist designing postcards advocating for a building moratorium in Shinnecock Hills. Dennis will share a brief background about Shinnecock Hills and its significance to the Shinnecock Nation\, answer any questions\, and show how to create postcards. Materials will be provided. \n“The Shinnecock Hills are a sacred landscape for the Shinnecock People\,” says Jeremy Dennis. “Ancestors\, dating back over three thousand years\, are buried here. In 1859\, Southampton Town stole the Shinnecock Hills using lies\, deceit\, and forged signatures. The Shinnecock Nation pursued and received Federal Recognition to regain these lands with the help of New York State but have yet to receive support from any NYS Governor that has held office since 2010.” \n \nABOUT JEREMY DENNIS \nJeremy Dennis (b. 1990) explores indigenous identity\, culture\, and assimilation in his work. In 2018\, he participated in the Parrish Road Show with an exhibition at the Arts Center at Duck Creek\, East Hampton. He was one of 10 recipients of a 2016 Dreamstarter Grant from the national non-profit organization Running Strong for American Indian Youth. He was awarded $10\,000 to pursue his project\, On This Site\, which uses photography and an interactive online map to showcase culturally significant Native American sites on Long Island\, a topic of special meaning for Dennis\, who was raised on the Shinnecock Nation Reservation. He also created a book and exhibition from this project. Most recently\, Dennis received the Creative Bursar Award from Getty Images in 2018 to continue his series Stories. In 2013\, Dennis began working on the series\, Stories—Indigenous Oral Stories\, Dreams and Myths. Inspired by North American indigenous stories\, the artist staged supernatural images that transform these myths and legends to depictions of an actual experience in a photograph. \n  \nABOUT ALL ARTS \nALL ARTS is breaking new ground as a destination for inspiration\, creativity and art of all forms. This New York Emmy-winning arts and culture hub is created by The WNET Group\, the community-supported home of New York’s PBS stations. With the aim of being accessible to viewers everywhere\, ALL ARTS’ Webby-nominated programming—from digital shorts to feature films—is available online nationwide through AllArts.org\, the free ALL ARTS app on all major streaming platforms. The First Twenty explores events that have caused a shift in the collective American consciousness with artists as guides. Audiences can witness their responses to incidents or moments in the first 20 years of the 21st century. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. SUMMARY:Studio Tour | Ma's House
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nJoin us for a private tour of Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio\, a communal art space based on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation. The event will feature a conversation with Jeremy Dennis\, lead artist\, who will share the history of Ma’s House and its residency program for Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. In addition to Dennis’ work\, you will see “Point of Reference”\, the solo exhibition of new works by December resident artist\, Jacoub Reyes. \nJeremy Dennis. Photo by Lori Hawkins. \nJeremy Dennis is a contemporary fine art photographer and a tribal member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation. In his work\, he explores indigenous identity\, culture\, and assimilation\, and in 2018\, he participated in the Parrish Road Show with an exhibition at the Arts Center at Duck Creek\, East Hampton. He was one of 10 recipients of a 2016 Dreamstarter Grant from the national non-profit organization Running Strong for American Indian Youth. He finds and makes materials and tools as part of an experimental aspect of his process. Reyes salvages and transforms found wood to reflect how marginalized and oppressed communities have been cast aside throughout history. With these\, he carves detailed large-scale allegorical woodcuts based on the acculturation of the Caribbean and the world at large. Reyes’ focus on colonization and indigenous peoples has led him to unpack his personal history and share a message he hopes prevents historic recurrences. \n“Every conversation of oppression\, the intersection of religion and activism\, how politics have corrupted and yet propelled countries forward in development are all conversations that have echoed throughout time as culture has shifted\, albeit sometimes like a pendulum\,” says Reyes\, December resident artist. \nThe event takes place at Ma’s House\, located at 159 Old Point Rd\, Southampton\, NY. \nRELATED\nFilm & Workshop | An Evening With Jeremy Dennis – Parrish Art Museum : Parrish Art Museum \n  \nThis event is intended for Parrish Art Museum Members and their guests.\nTo join or upgrade your Membership\, please contact us at membership@parrishart.org or 631-283-2118.\nAttendance is limited to 12 people.  A 2:00 PM program will be added should the 10:00 AM session fill up.\nIf the event fills\, please email us at membership@parrishart.org to be put on the waitlist\, or to be placed in the 2:00 session.\nAll sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable.\nThis indoor event requires all attendees to wear medical-grade masks at all times and show proof of vaccination; those 18 and older must provide a valid ID. SUMMARY:Talk | peter campus\, Virginia Jaramillo\, and John Torreano
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special conversation with three seminal East End artists at the height of their creative powers\, featured in solo exhibitions this fall. Chief Curator Alicia Longwell will talk with peter campus\, Virginia Jaramillo\, and John Torreano about their decades-long careers and how their practices intersect.\nABOUT PETER CAMPUS \npeter campus (American\, b. New York\, New York 1937) is a seminal artist in the canons of new media and video art. \nABOUT VIRGINIA JARAMILLO \nA pioneering minimalist whose career has spanned six decades\, Virginia Jaramillo (American\, b. El Paso\, Texas\, 1939) creates work from sources that span history and cross cultures. The exhibition brings together never before seen paintings and drawings completed in her Hampton Bays studio over the past two years. Harmony between Line and Space features two 12-foot canvases\, Quantum Entanglement and Quanta\, in which expansive fields of color are crisscrossed by impossibly uniform razor-thin lines. “The color field was not negative space\,” notes Jaramillo\, “but a space filled with life and possibilities.” \nABOUT JOHN TORREANO \nWith the universe as his muse\, New York and Sag Harbor-based artist John Torreano (American\, b. Flint\, Michigan\, 1941) combines realism infused with abstraction to create works that conflate time and space. Often mapping out ideas on paper first and expanding in paintings\, Torreano has been inspired by the myriad images recorded by the Hubble Space Telescope to create works that contrast the physical with the illusory. \n  \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. Limited tickets will be available at the door. All sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable.\nThis indoor event requires all attendees to wear medical-grade masks at all times and show proof of vaccination; those 18 and older must provide a valid ID. SUMMARY:Online Talk | Corinne Erni and Andras Szanto on The Future of the Museum
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nOnline only \nAlmost exactly a year ago\, Senior Curator Corinne Erni talked with museum strategist and author András Szántó about his book\, The Future of the Museum: 28 Dialogues. Listen to their conversation where they addressed questions that are still relevant to museums today—how they adapt to new realities and what some of the most exciting approaches are. Szántó is currently working on a follow up book on the future of museums in conversation with architects\, including Herzog & de Meuron who designed the Parrish. \nHow do museums adapt to new realities around the world today? What are some of the most exciting approaches? As museums worldwide shuttered in 2020 because of the coronavirus\, Szántó conducted a series of interviews with an international group of museum leaders. In a moment when economic\, political\, and cultural shifts are signaling the start of a new era\, the directors speak candidly about the historical limitations and untapped potential of art museums. Each of the 28 conversations in the book explores a particular topic of relevance to art institutions today and tomorrow. What emerges from the in-depth conversations is a composite portrait of a generation of museum leaders working to make institutions more open\, democratic\, inclusive\, experimental and experiential\, technologically savvy\, culturally polyphonic\, attuned to the needs of their visitors and communities\, and concerned with addressing the defining issues of the societies around them. The dialogues offer glimpses of how museums around the globe are undergoing an accelerated phase of reappraisal and reinvention. \nABOUT ANDRÁS SZÁNTÓ\nSzántó advises museums\, foundations\, educational institutions\, and leading brands on cultural strategy. His writings on the art world and art market have appeared in The New York Times\, Artforum\, The Art Newspaper\, and many international publications. He has directed the National Arts Journalism Program at Columbia University and has overseen the Global Museum Leaders Colloquium at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He is based in New York and Brookhaven Hamlet\, Long Island. He is currently working on the Frankenthaler Climate Art Award\, in a collaboration between The Helen Frankenthaler Foundation\, Asia Society\, National Gallery of Art\, Hirshhorn Museum\, Phillips Collection\, and the Environmental Defense Fund for an open call\, which is live on climateartawards.org \n  \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended.
