DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nJoin Members at the Parrish Contemporaries Circle and above for a private tour of the featured works by solo artist Mandy El-Sayegh at the Lehmann Maupin Gallery\, located at 501 West 24th Street\, New York\, NY 1011. \nMandy El-Sayegh’s (b. 1985\, Malaysia\, lives and works in London\, United Kingdom) exhibition entitled The Amateur will coincide with the Loriel Beltrain’s first show with Lehmann Maupin entitled Color y Color in our downstairs gallery. \nEl Sayegh’s highly process-driven practice is rooted in an exploration of material and language. Executed in a wide range of media\, including densely layered paintings\, sculpture\, installation\, diagrams\, and sound and video\, El-Sayegh’s work investigates the formation and break-down of systems of order\, be they bodily\, linguistic\, or political. Her work is in public and private collections including the Institute of Contemporary Art North Miami\, Miami\, FL; Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, Los Angeles\, CA; and Collection Nicoletta Fiorucci Russo\, London\, United Kingdom. Born in Kita\, Mali\, Sissoko began learning the kora\, a 21-stringed instrument at the age of 9\, and began touring internationally by age 15. In 2012\, Le won a coveted fellowship position with Ensemble Connect (formerly Ensemble ACJW\, the Academy of Carnegie Hall and the Juilliard School and the Weill Institute of Music) and has performed regularly at Carnegie Hall\, the Juilliard School\, and other venues around New York City. \nAmong the many selections in her Salon Series program\, Le’s dynamic pairings of American and non-American musical works will include two works that combine classical and pop music genres. French composer Francis Poulenc’s florid\, lyrical Improvisation no. 15: Hommage à Édith Piaf—the quintessential French chanteuse—is coupled with a piano arrangement of George Gershwin’s distinctly American Rhapsody in Blue that combines elements of classical and jazz\, established with the iconic opening siren-like clarinet riff and continuing with sections that evoke the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple in the 1920s. Her program also includes Claude Debussy’s Clair de Lune\, a hallmark of French Impressionism\, paired with Summerland from the 1935 suite Three Visions by William Grant Still\, often referred to as the “Dean of Afro-American Composers.” The suite tells the story of the soul’s journey\, with Summerland a metaphor for entering into heaven. \nPROGRAM \nThree Visions: 1. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$25 Members | $35 Adults (Nonmembers) | $20 for Students\, Children \nSalon Series\, the Parrish Art Museum’s classical music program featuring world-class artists\, continues its spring schedule with a solo performance by Chinese pianist Wynona Wang. \nWang begins the concert with the Dante Sonata by Hungarian composer Franz Liszt\, inspired Victor Hugo‘s poem Après un lecture du Dante (After a reading of Dante). The first theme evokes the wailing of souls in Hell; the second is a chorale representing the joy of souls in Heaven. Following are two Preludes by Aristea Mellos: the rhythmically dynamic Me cansé de vivir me caso (I’m tired of living so I’m getting married) and the lush\, dreamlike Go to sleep my beloved… (Djoko’s Lullaby). The first act ends with Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Sonata No. 23\, “Appassionata\,” considered one of his greatest\, most technically challenging\, and tempestuous piano sonatas. Wang will end her program with a rarely performed sonata by Sergei Rachmaninoff\, the Sonata No. 1 in D minor\, Op. 28. \nBorn in Beijing\, Wang is an active performer in China\, Europe\, and the United States. Recent North American performances include the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra\, the Meadows Symphony Orchestra of SMU Dallas\, and major festivals including PianoTexas\, Morningside Music Bridge in Calgary\, Canada\, the International Keyboard Institute & Festival in New York City\, and the Chautauqua Institution. In 1952\, Rebecca Bolling Littlejohn assumed the presidency of the Parrish’s Board of Trustees and began a crusade that would rename\, rebrand\, and revive the waning institution and bring it into the 20th Century\, including the acquisition of the first William Merritt Chase paintings and also works by contemporary East End artists Fairfield Porter\, Larry Rivers\, and John D. Graham. Join Chief Curator Emeritus\, Alicia G. Longwell\, for a reflection on this remarkable innovator while recalling her own four-decade career at the Museum—so often inspired by Mrs. Littlejohn’s stirring legacy. \nLongwell served as the Parrish Art Museum’s Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education for over three decades until her retirement in October 2022. She received her Ph.D. from the Graduate Center\, City University of New York\, where her dissertation topic was John Graham. Throughout her tenure\, she was integral in building the Museum’s collection through identifying and pursuing acquisitions\, including major works by Ross Bleckner\, Mary Heilmann\, Lonnie Holley\, Elizabeth Peyton\, David Salle\, Alan Shields\, and Joe Zucker. \nAmong her most notable curatorial achievements are Sand: Memory\, Meaning and Metaphor (2008)\, John Graham: Maverick Modernist (2017)\, and Affinities for Abstraction: Women Artists on Eastern Long Island\, 1950-2020 (2021). Longwell ushered the Museum into its new building in Water Mill\, planning the inaugural installations of the Parrish collection for the 2012 opening that featured the exhibition Malcolm Morley: Painting\, Paper\, Process (2012). DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nJoin the artist JR (b. 1983\, Paris\, France) as he discusses the impetus for his Déplacé.e.s series\, and shares details of his experiences at the refugee camps and collaborations with a variety of communities to create art together. Following the talk\, JR will be available for a book signing of his most recent catalogue raisonné\, Artist Until I find a Real Job. \nThe talk is held in conjunction with Les Enfants d’Ouranos\, JR’s large-scale\, site-specific installation on the south façade of the Museum. The 200-foot long banner\, depicting children playing\, covering a wide span of the exterior wall\, will be visible from the Montauk Highway for an entire year. \nLes Enfants d’Ouranos (Children of Ouranos) continues JR’s previous work for Déplacé.e.s\, featuring children from refugee camps in Rwanda\, Ukraine\, Mauritania\, Greece\, and Colombia. The project comprised aerial photographs of 170-foot-long banners—carried by groups of people around the camp or a city—that depict the full image of a child running playfully. Les Enfants d’Ouranos also presents images of carefree children from the same refugee camps but removed from their original context\, and transported into an idealized world. \nJR works at the intersection of photography\, public art\, filmmaking\, and social engagement. Over the last two decades\, he has developed multiple public projects and numerous site-specific interventions in cities all over the world: from buildings in the slums around Paris\, to the walls in the Middle East and Africa or the favelas of Brazil. \n  \n  \nFriday Nights are made possible\, in part by Weill Cornell Medicine – Southampton and The Corcoran Group

The landmark exhibition honors the East End’s rich artistic legacy and brings greater attention to major artists practicing here today. Forty-one renowned artists with deep local roots were invited to select works from the collection to be shown along with their own\, offering new perspectives and interpretations of the Parrish’s permanent collection. \nShinnecock Nation member Jeremy Dennis juxtaposes his version of the desecrated indigenous burial grounds in Southampton with a painting by William Merritt Chase. While the latter’s Shinnecock Landscape\, 1894\, was devoid of any Shinnecock people\, Dennis’s photograph The Sacredness of Hills\, presents an indigenous woman in traditional dress\, looming large over a pristine landscape to affirm the continued presence of indigenous people. \nSam Moyer selected works by artist Lynda Benglis\, whom she credits not only for having a direct and lasting impact on her work\, but for introducing her to the North Fork of Long Island—a place that has inspired Moyer for years. Three works by Benglis—a papier collé\, monoprint\, and mixed medium sculpture—are shown with Moyer’s work in various media including black slate\, marble\, and plaster-coated canvas. \nEnoc Perez connected Hans Hofmann’s Image in Green\, 1950\, with his abstract yet realistic work Dorado Beach Hotel\, Puerto Rico\, 2023—describing both as full of promise. \nThe Artists Choose Parrish exhibition is made possible\, in part\, thanks to the generous support of the Estate of Mildred C. SUMMARY:Optic Garden | Preview at Exhibition The Barn
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nParrish Contemporaries Circle members are invited to join Frampton Co for open-air cocktails and an exclusive preview of Optic Garden\, presented in collaboration with The Rug Company\, at Exhibition The Barn in Bridgehampton. Optic Garden showcases art and design in equal measure with rugs designed by leading creatives for The Rug Company\, including “Undercover\,” a new bespoke rug designed by Elena Frampton\, Principal at Frampton Co\, alongside contemporary paintings by Christine Keefe\, and ceramics by Kalya O’Donoghue. \nInspired to bring an element of the three-dimensional to a typically two-dimensional object\, Elena Frampton designed “Undercover” using a trompe l’oeil effect. The design marries optical illusion with traditional ornamentation\, as a floral-patterned rug appears to peel back from the floor at opposing corners\, offering both a decorative and architectural statement within interior space. Echoing the inspiration behind “Undercover\,” the exhibition recontextualizes form\, function\, and ornamentation in the display. Rugs cascade down the wall and onto the floor\, putting the artistry and creative vision of the designs in full view. The selection of rugs\, curated by Elena Frampton\, includes creative perspectives across a range of industries with additional designs by Diane von Furstenberg\, Rodarte\, Mary Katrantzou\, Paul Smith\, Sarabande\, and The Rug Company. \nAbout Exhibition\n\nA stone’s throw from the ocean\, Exhibition The Barn is situated in the serene hamlet of Bridgehampton in Long Island\, New York. Through high-profile curatorial partnerships and immersive exhibitions\, the gallery brings a modern and engaging contribution to the east end’s artistic heritage. \n\nThe event is for active Contemporaries Circle members.
