SUMMARY:Off-Site Road Show Reception | Denise Silva-Dennis: Wunne Ohke–The Return To Good Ground
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nOPENING RECEPTION\nSisters of St. Joseph Villa\n81 Lynn Ave\, Hampton Bays\, NY\, 11946\nOutdoors\, free and open to the public \nFor the 2022 Parrish Road Show\, Shinnecock artist Denise “Weetahmoe” Silva-Dennis (American\, b. 1960) will create a site-specific mural at the Sisters of St. Joseph Villa in Hampton Bays\, continuing her life-long practice of inter-generational education and storytelling though the arts.  In Wunne Ohke–The Return to Good Ground\, Silva-Dennis shares the ancestral history of Shinnecock Bay. \nThe Algonquin words translating to “good ground\,” Wunne Ohke is the original placename of the Hampton Bays area given by the Shinnecock who first inhabited the region as a residential area. The name refers to the smooth “good ground” that allowed ease of launching canoes for whaling. In this new mural\, Silva-Dennis vibrantly reimagines land from pre-colonial times and combines it with more recent significant landmarks in the Shinnecock Nation’s history. Through the work itself  and public programming\, visitors will learn from the artist and her fellow Shinnecock research collaborators how these ancestral places came to be\, how they’ve changed\, and what they mean to the Shinnecock people today. \nActivism has long been a part of Silva-Dennis’ process: She has a rich history of protest poster design and is currently serving on the board of the Niamuck Land Trust and Shinnecock Graves Protection Warrior Society (SGPWS). In her earlier painting Sugar Loaf she reflects on the successes and continued goals of grassroots activism for graves protection and Land Back efforts–such as the purchase of the sacred burial site at Sugar Loaf Hill to be preserved and returned to the Shinnecock. For Wunne Ohke–The Return to Good Ground\, Silva-Dennis is looking towards the future. Shinnecock histories highlighting efforts to regain ancestral lands and revitalize traditional practices for future generations are carried on and celebrated through art. \nParrish Road Show 2022 | Denise Silva-Dennis: Wunne Ohke–The Return to Good Ground is organized by Corinne Erni\, Senior Curator of ArtsReach and Special Projects with support from Brianna Hernández\, Curatorial Fellow. \nWunne Ohke–The Return to Good Ground debuts on October 16\, 2022\, and is on view outdoors and open to the public thereafter. \nParrish Road Show 2022 | Wunne Ohke–The Return to Good Ground\, is made possible\, in part\, by the generous support of Eastern Scaffolding & Shoring\, Inc.\, Jane Wesman and Donald Savelson\, and the Dorothy Lichtenstein ArtsReach Fund established by Agnes Gund. \nABOUT PARRISH ROAD SHOW\nNow in its 11th year\, the Parrish Road Show is the Museum’s annual creative off-site exhibition program where End artists are invited to create new work for temporary projects. Connecting art and creativity to myriad communities\, the exhibitions take place at public sites across the region—cultural and historical organizations\, public parks and highways\, and community centers\, and the artists offer public talks and art-making workshops for children and adults. \nABOUT DENISE “WEETAHMOE” SILVA-DENNIS\nDenise “Weetahmoe” Silva-Dennis (b. 1960\, Riverhead\, NY) is a multi-disciplinary artist and educator based in the Shinnecock Nation. Silva-Dennis graduated from Hamilton College\, Clinton\, New York\, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art. Silva-Dennis works primarily in acrylic for her figurative paintings and murals and is also an accomplished beadwork craftswoman. The traditional Eastern Woodland style of beadwork was handed down to her from her mother and elder women of the Shinnecock and Hassanamisco-Nipmuc Nations. Denise’s has exhibited at art galleries\, museums\, libraries\, schools\, and colleges throughout Long Island and Upstate\, including at Hamilton College’s Bundy Center and Library. \nABOUT THE SISTERS OF ST. JOSEPH\nFor more than 169 years the Sisters of Saint Joseph have served the people of Long Island. The Sisters of St. Joseph’s goal is to foster love\, unity\, and reconciliation among all people with the education and empowerment of women as a key focus. The Sisters of St. Joseph are educators from elementary to the university level\, social workers\, health care professionals\, lawyers\, parish ministers\, administrators\, and spiritual directors. They also have ministries independently operated including six high schools\, a learning program for immigrant women\, and a skilled nursing facility.

SUMMARY:FILM & TALK | Art & Krimes by Krimes
DESCRIPTION:$16 Adults | $5 for Members\, Students\, Children \nREGISTER\n\n85 min\, 2022\, Directed by Alysa Nahmias\nFollowed by a panel discussion\nJoin us for a screening of the award-winning documentary Art & Krimes by Krimes\, followed by a conversation via Zoom with Jesse Krimes; fellow artists Russell Craig\, Jared Owens\, and Gilberto Rivera; and Director Alysa Nahmias. The program will be moderated in-person at the Museum by Corinne Erni\, Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs and Senior Curator of Artsreach and Special Projects. \nAbout the Film\nWhile serving six years in a federal penitentiary\, artist Jesse Krimes secretly created monumental works of art\, including Apokaluptein: 16389067–an astonishing 40-foot mural made with prison bed sheets\, hair gel\, and newspaper. He smuggled out each panel piece-by-piece with the help of fellow artists\, and saw the complete work for the first time upon his release. As Krimes’s work captured the art world’s attention\, he struggled to adjust to life outside\, living with the threat that any misstep could trigger a life sentence. Described by ARTnews as “an eye-opening look at how one artist is seeking to lift the veil on a part of American society that has been made largely invisible to the public” the film speaks to the power of art as a humanizing force and a call for transformation. \nArt & Krimes by Krimes is directed by Alysa Nahmias;  produced by Amanda Spain\, Benjamin Murray\, and Alysa Nahmias; with executive producers Sheila Nevins\, Jenifer Westphal\, Joe Plummer\, Patty Quillin\, Hallee Adelman\, and  Ivy Herman;  co-executive producers  Nion McEvoy and Leslie Berriman\, Ruth Ann Harnisch\, and Sheri Sobrato-Brisson. Art & Krimes by Krimes is an MTV Documentary Films project\, produced by AJNA Productions in association with Wavelength & Giving Voice Films. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. Limited tickets will be available at the door. All sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable. This program requires proof of full vaccination. Mask-wearing is not required but recommended when not eating or drinking. \nMore information surrounding our COVID-19 protocol →\n  \n  \nFriday Nights at the Parrish are made possible\, in part\, by Presenting Sponsor: \n  \n \n  \nAdditional support provided by Weill Cornell Medicine – Southampton and The Corcoran Group \n

SUMMARY:Members Reception | Mel Kendrick: Seeing Things in Things
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n6:30 pm | Program with the artist\nJoin us for the preview of Mel Kendrick: Seeing Things in Things. Presenting a wide range of sculpture from the artist’s decades-long career\, Seeing Things in Things explores how Mel Kendrick (American\, b. 1949) exploits the essential properties of his selected medium\, whether wood\, rubber—and more recently concrete—to create sculpture that inherently lays bare the process by which it was made. Curated by Allison N. Kemmerer\, Mead Curator of Photography and Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the Addison Gallery of American Art\, Andover\, MA. \nThe works by Kendrick\, a Parrish collection artist and longtime resident of the East End of Long Island\, NY\, will be on view in this comprehensive multi-gallery exhibition that celebrates his unique approach to artmaking—one that is fueled by a tireless inquiry into the seemingly limitless possibility of sculpture. A fully illustrated catalogue co-published and distributed by Rizzoli International includes an introductory essay by Nancy Princenthal as well as a series of focused essays by those close to his work. \nMel Kendrick: Seeing Things in Things was organized by the Addison Gallery of American Art\, Phillips Academy\, Andover\, Massachusetts and curated by Allison Kemmerer\, The Mary Stripp and R. Crosby Kemper Director. The presentation at the Parrish Art Museum is organized by Corinne Erni\, Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs and Senior Curator of ArtsReach and Special Projects\, with additional support from Kaitlin Halloran\, Curatorial Assistant and Publications Coordinator and Brianna L.
