SUMMARY:Music | Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nThe Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival returns to the Parrish Art Museum with a special outdoor concert that transcends cultures and times. The program alternates works for winds and strings\, beginning with Umoja for Wind Quintet by flutist/contemporary composer Valerie Coleman. The Swahili word for “unity\,” Umoja was originally a simple family call-and-response call for unity sung at Kwanzaa. Coleman arranged the tune for her wind quintet Imani Winds\, with the melody carried by French horn. BCMF’s string players take the stage for Trio for Strings in G minor (1894) by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Wind players return for the Humoreske for Wind Quintet (1939) by Viennese composer Alexander Zemlinsky. \nIn Jean Françaix’s String Trio in C (1933)\, three of the four brief movements are bright and crisp\, with a strong kinetic connection to the dance music the composer was writing at the time. BCMF wind players come together with oboe in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Quartet for Oboe\, Violin\, Viola\, and Cello\, K. 370/368b (1781)\, written for the composer’s friend—virtuoso oboist Friedrich Ramm. \nThe concert concludes with contemporary composer Derek Bermel’s Ghanaian dance-inspire\, Wanderings for Wind Quintet (1994) which alludes to the Muslim and Jewish quarters that exist side by without boundaries in Jerusalem’s Old City. Similarly\, in Bermel’s work\, musical threads of continuity appear and suddenly vanish\, remaining elusive. Wanderings reveals influences of gyil music of the Daghati and Lobi peoples\, who live in Northwestern Ghana\, Southern Burkina-Faso\, and Northeastern Ivory Coast. \nARTISTS\nMarya Martin\, flute\nBixby Kennedy\, clarinet\nJames Austin Smith\, oboe\nPeter Kolkay\, bassoon\nStewart Rose\, horn\nStella Chen\, violin\nCong Wu\, viola\nNicholas Canellakis\, cello \nAbout Bridgehampton Chamber Music\nSince 1984\, Bridgehampton Chamber Music has brought the very best of chamber music to Long Island’s East End. From a pair of concerts over a single weekend\, to a series of concerts over 5 weeks in the summer as well as a series of concerts each spring and fall\, BCM has become one of the country’s most highly regarded chamber music organizations in the country. Each year\, some of the world’s finest chamber musicians gather in Bridgehampton to create unique musical experiences. \nIn the event of rain\, the concert will be moved indoors to the Lichtenstein Theater. Advance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. Limited tickets will be available at the door. All sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable. \nAttendees at events in the Museum’s theater\, café\, or studio (ages 5 and older) are required to provide proof of full vaccination in order to maintain a mask-optional environment. SUMMARY:Workshop | Eco Printing
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n$75 | Member \n$100 | Non-Member \nEco printing is directly related to the art of dyeing with natural plant materials. The process usually involves a form of heat and pressure to create a distinctive print. Historically\, the dyeing of fabric with natural plant material has been around since 100 A.D. Applying heat to a vessel of dye and submerging the textile is simple\, however\, the retention of the color through time and laundering is a challenge. At this workshop\, you will make designs on a silk scarf using an eco-print of leaves and flowers. \nAbout Oksana Danziger \nAs a natural-born creator with a passion for textile art\, she works as a freelance textile artist for numerous studios – including Printfolio\, Design Works International\, and Group Four. Oksana also teaches at the Art League of Long Island and conducts workshops in schools through the Huntington Arts Council. She taught in the surface design department at The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) as an adjunct professor \nMore information surrounding our COVID-19 protocol → \nThe Museum reserves the right to cancel any class which does not meet minimum enrollment requirements.

SUMMARY:Music | The Lighthouse Project: Tribute to Elvin Jones
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nOur Summer concerts in collaboration with Hamptons Jazz Fest conclude with The Lighthouse Project: Tribute to Elvin Jones\, a widely celebrated musician and drummer\, who jazz historian and critic Ted Goia calls “one of the most influential drummers in the history of jazz.” \nThe Lighthouse Project\, on this occasion featuring Adam Nussbaum on drums\, Gene Perla on bass\, and Jerry Bergonzie and Nicole Glover on saxophone\, brings together a rhythmic and chromatic approach to the “swing jazz” Jones famously redefined in collaboration with musician John Coltrane. The Lighthouse Project\, originally formed with David Liebman alongside Perla\, Nussbaum\, and Bergonzie\, resurrects the repertoire Perla and Liebman played with Jones in the early 1970s. This special tribute concert embodies the group’s commitment to rhythm\, beat\, and the spirit of the jazz Elvin Jones magnified. \nPlease bring your own chairs. No Museum seating is available. \nNo outside food or coolers are permitted at the Museum. Snacks\, beverages and gourmet picnic baskets are available to purchase in the Parrish Café. SUMMARY:Talk | Herzog & de Meuron architects Ascan Mergenthaler and Philip Schmerbeck in conversation with artist Hank Willis Thomas
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nLIVESTREAM\n$12 | Free for Members \nJoin us in celebrating our 10th anniversary in Water Mill in a conversation with Ascan Mergenthaler and Philip Schmerbeck—the architects from the internationally acclaimed firm Herzog & de Meuron who designed the new building—and Hank Willis Thomas\, presenting artist and co-curator of Another Justice: US is Them–Hank Willis Thomas | For Freedoms. Moderated by Museum Executive Director Mónica Ramírez-Montagut\, who holds a Ph.D. in architecture\, the discussion will explore the relationship between the Museum’s design from the architects’ perspective\, as well as from the viewpoint of an artist curating and exhibiting work in the space. \nThe innovative design by Herzog & de MeuronSenior Partner Mergenthaler and Studio Director Schmerbeck integrates architecture and landscape in a plan that both respects and reflects the singular natural beauty and rich artistic legacy of Long Island’s East End. Sited on 14 acres\, the purpose-built structure suggests the vernacular architecture of sheds and potato barns that for generations doubled as artist workspaces. Inspired by the light\, water\, and sky that create the unique atmosphere of the region\, the building features sky-lit galleries that mimic the light and proportions of typical artist’s studio. \n \nIn the exhibition Another Justice: US is Them\, on view through November 6\, Thomas along with other featured artists adopt dynamic and responsive approaches to activate the full volume of the architectural space. Thomas’s wall-sized works made from deconstructed flags envelop the gallery space in fabric. In the Spine\, Christine Sun Kim creates an immersive pathway between the galleries with bold\, vibrant notations from the American Sign Language. Outdoors on the building exterior and grounds\, Thomas activates the museum’s southern-facing façade with a 55–foot neon sign clearly visible from the highway. Muna Malik’s 20–foot longmirrored acrylic boat sited in the Museum’s Meadowentices visitors to venture into and explore the landscape. \nAbout Ascan Mergenthaler\nHerzog & de Meuron Senior Partner Ascan Mergenthaler is in charge of projects in Europe\, Asia\, and the Americas and has led the realization of the de Young Museum in San Francisco; the Parrish Art Museum on Long Island\, New York; the Tate Modern Project in London; the Blavatnik School of Government in Oxford; the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg; 56 Leonard Street in New York City; and Tai Kwun\, Centre for Heritage & Arts; as well as M+\, a cultural center for 20th and 21st century art\, design\, architecture\, and the moving image in Hong Kong. He is currently working on several high-profile projects\, such as the Neue Nationalgalerie—Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts in Berlin; and Triangle in Paris—the first high-rise since Tour Montparnasse—that will significantly contribute to the Parisian skyline. Mergenthaler first joined Herzog & de Meuron as an intern in 1993. After completing his studies at Stuttgart University and The Bartlett\, University College London\, he became an architect at Herzog & de Meuron in 1998 and Partner in 2004. \nAbout Philip Schmerbeck\nPhilip Schmerbeck is Studio Director USA at Herzog & de Meuron. SUMMARY:Tour | Joaquín Sorolla and Esteban Vicente: In the Light of the Garden led by Alicia G. Longwell and Kaitlin Halloran
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n$12 Adults\, $9 Seniors | Free for Members\, Students\, Children \nJoin us at the Parrish for a gallery tour of Joaquín Sorolla and Esteban Vicente: In the Light of the Garden with Alicia G. Longwell\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator and Kaitlin Halloran\, Curatorial Assistant and Publications Coordinator. Tour will begin at 5 PM in the Museum lobby. The exhibition In the Light of the Garden introduces the work of two Spanish masters in the context of the light and color emanating from their gardens—a vibrant source of inspiration in their final creative periods. \nJoaquín Sorolla (Spanish\, b. 1863−1923) designed the garden at his home\, now the Sorolla Museum in Madrid\, between 1909 and 1911\, conceiving of it as a reflection of his own creativity and a work of art in itself. Art and nature became one in this private place of inspiration and retreat. For Sorolla\, as for the other artists of the time\, the garden was part of the realm of the senses. \nAlmost half a century later\, in 1964\, Esteban Vicente (American\, born Spain\, 1903 ̶ 2001) and his wife Harriet acquired a Dutch colonial-style farmhouse in Bridgehampton\, New York\, on Long Island\, where he set up a studio for painting in an 18th-c. barn on the property and cultivated a beautiful garden\, an ever-changing field of color. \nIn the Light of the Garden is presented in collaboration with the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente in Segovia\, Ana Doldán de Cáceres\,Director. The presentation at the Parrish Art Museum\, organized by Chief Curator Alicia Longwell\, is supported by the Harriet and Esteban Vicente Foundation. \nAttendees at events in the Museum’s theater\, terrace\, café\, or studio (ages 5 and older) are required to provide proof of full vaccination in order to maintain a mask-optional environment. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended.
