SUMMARY:Music | Jacques Schwarz-Bar: Jewish Chants and Afro-Caribbean Jazz Quintet
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nSummer concerts on the Terrace continue with a live jazz performance by Jacques Schwarz-Bart: Jewish Chants and Afro-Caribbean Jazz Quintet\, co-presented with Hamptons Jazz Fest. As part of the second annual Hamptons Jazz Fest\, Schwarz-Bart brings exciting lyrical jazz styles to the Parrish.  \nBorn in Guadalupe\, Jacques Schwarz-Bart pursued a path of music and mysticism\, playing alongside luminaries such as Roy Hargrove\, Danilo Perez\, Ari Hoenig\, Meshell n’Degeocello and D’angelo or Chucho Valdes. He outright created two surging new styles: Gwoka Jazz\, and Voodoo Jazz\, reuniting jazz music with its Afro-Caribbean and spiritual origins. With impressionistic writing\, powerful tone\, and wide-ranging language – both lyrical and angular – these jazz styles have fueled a growing presence on the world stage. Leading the Gwoka Jazz Project\, Schwarz-Bart recorded two albums for Universal\, Soné Ka La and Abyss\, which built his career as an internationally acclaimed jazz musician and band leader.  \nIn 2010\, he released Rise Above\, which revives his long-lasting collaboration with singer – and spouse – Stephanie McKay and blends NY urban mood and Caribbean feelings. Schwarz-Bart went on to work on projects and recordings including The Art of Dreaming\, Jazz Racine Haiti\, Creole Spirits\, Voodoo Jazz Trio and Hazzan. In 2016\, Schwarz-Bart joined the faculty at Berklee College of Music as an Associate Professor for ensembles of jazz and neo-soul music. \n  \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. Limited tickets will be available at the door. All sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable. \nAttendees at events in the Museum’s theater\, café\, or studio (ages 5 and older) are required to provide proof of full vaccination in order to maintain a mask-optional environment. Visitors to the Museum galleries (ages 2 and older) are required to wear a medical-grade mask at all times\, regardless of vaccination status. \nMore information surrounding our COVID-19 protocol → \nFriday Nights at the Parrish are made possible\, in part\, by Presenting Sponsor: \n \nAdditional support provided by Weill Cornell Medicine – Southampton and The Corcoran Group

SUMMARY:Member's Reception | Another Justice: US is Them—Hank Willis Thomas | For Freedoms
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n6 PM | Talk with the Curators and the Artists \nJoin us for the preview of Another Justice: US is Them\, featuring the new work of 12 contemporary artists from For Freedoms—the artist collective co-founded by Hank Willis Thomas with the mission to model and increase creative civic engagement\, discourse\, and direct action. \nPresented in the Parrish galleries\, outdoors in the Meadow\, and as digital billboards on the Shinnecock Monuments on Sunrise Highway\, the exhibition features mixed media\, sculpture\, site-responsive installation\, wall painting\, and photography—much of which was created specifically for the exhibition. Another Justice is a call to the community to reconvene and reconsider the meaning of justice in a time of imbalance. \nIn an ongoing partnership with the Museum\, The Watermill Center has invited Thomas and For Freedoms for a residency from September 14 to October 7\, 2022\, as part of their Inga Maren Otto Fellowship for visual artists. A series of public programs in conjunction will take place at the Parrish and Watermill during the residency. \nAnother Justice: US is Them—Hank Willis Thomas | For Freedoms is organized by Corinne Erni\, Senior Curator of ArtsReach and Special Projects\, with support from Brianna Hernández\, Curatorial Fellow\, and is co-curated by Hank Willis Thomas and Carly Fischer. \nThe exhibition is made possible\, in part\, thanks to the generous support of Katherine Farley and Jerry Speyer; Alexandra Stanton and Sam Natapoff; Miyoung Lee and Neil Simpkins; Sandy and Stephen Perlbinder; George Wells; Scott and Margot Ziegler; Nina Yankowitz; Caroline Hoffman; The Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family; and Storm Ascher\, Superposition Gallery. \nWe are also grateful to Ben Brown Fine Arts\, London\, Hong Kong\, Palm Beach; Jack Shainman Gallery\, New York; Pace LA; and Pippy Houldsworth Gallery\, London for their in-kind support. \nThe Parrish Art Museum’s programs are made possible\, in part\, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature\, and by the property taxpayers from the Southampton School District and the Tuckahoe Common School District.

SUMMARY:Music | Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nThe Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival returns to the Parrish Art Museum with a special outdoor concert that transcends cultures and times. The program alternates works for winds and strings\, beginning with Umoja for Wind Quintet by flutist/contemporary composer Valerie Coleman. The Swahili word for “unity\,” Umoja was originally a simple family call-and-response call for unity sung at Kwanzaa. Coleman arranged the tune for her wind quintet Imani Winds\, with the melody carried by French horn. BCMF’s string players take the stage for Trio for Strings in G minor (1894) by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Wind players return for the Humoreske for Wind Quintet (1939) by Viennese composer Alexander Zemlinsky. \nIn Jean Françaix’s String Trio in C (1933)\, three of the four brief movements are bright and crisp\, with a strong kinetic connection to the dance music the composer was writing at the time. BCMF wind players come together with oboe in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Quartet for Oboe\, Violin\, Viola\, and Cello\, K. 370/368b (1781)\, written for the composer’s friend—virtuoso oboist Friedrich Ramm. \nThe concert concludes with contemporary composer Derek Bermel’s Ghanaian dance-inspire\, Wanderings for Wind Quintet (1994) which alludes to the Muslim and Jewish quarters that exist side by without boundaries in Jerusalem’s Old City. Similarly\, in Bermel’s work\, musical threads of continuity appear and suddenly vanish\, remaining elusive. Wanderings reveals influences of gyil music of the Daghati and Lobi peoples\, who live in Northwestern Ghana\, Southern Burkina-Faso\, and Northeastern Ivory Coast. \nARTISTS\nMarya Martin\, flute\nBixby Kennedy\, clarinet\nJames Austin Smith\, oboe\nPeter Kolkay\, bassoon\nStewart Rose\, horn\nStella Chen\, violin\nCong Wu\, viola\nNicholas Canellakis\, cello \nAbout Bridgehampton Chamber Music\nSince 1984\, Bridgehampton Chamber Music has brought the very best of chamber music to Long Island’s East End. From a pair of concerts over a single weekend\, to a series of concerts over 5 weeks in the summer as well as a series of concerts each spring and fall\, BCM has become one of the country’s most highly regarded chamber music organizations in the country. Each year\, some of the world’s finest chamber musicians gather in Bridgehampton to create unique musical experiences. \nIn the event of rain\, the concert will be moved indoors to the Lichtenstein Theater. Advance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. Limited tickets will be available at the door. All sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable. \nAttendees at events in the Museum’s theater\, café\, or studio (ages 5 and older) are required to provide proof of full vaccination in order to maintain a mask-optional environment.
