SUMMARY:Talk | Artists Choose Parrish: Ned Smyth and John Torreano
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$5 Members | $16 Adults | $12 Seniors | Free for Students & Children \nJoin us for a conversation with artists Ned Smyth and John Torreano\, whose work is on view in Artists Choose Parrish\, Part II\, moderated by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education. The landmark exhibition honors the East End’s rich artistic legacy and brings greater attention to major artists practicing here today. Forty-one renowned artists with deep local roots were invited to select works from the collection to be shown along with their own\, offering new perspectives and interpretations of the Parrish’s permanent collection. \nFor his Artists Choose Parrish presentation\, Ned Smyth chose Louise Nevelson’s Untitled (ca. late 1970s) painted wood sculpture to be in direct dialogue with his two cast concrete works from 1973\, Post Annunciation and Renaissance Plan. When deciding on which pieces he would like to include\, Smyth explained “I have always wanted to show my early minimalist architectural work at the Parrish. When I was asked to be part of Artists Choose Parrish\, I immediately suggested showing my cast concrete two-by-four architectural pieces.” Smyth was drawn to Nevelson’s work due to their shared monochromatic palette and their mutual success of commissioned work during their careers. \nWhen going through the Museum’s collection\, John Torreano instantly thought of Dennis Oppenheim’s Splash Building (2009) to show alongside his works\, 4 x 4 (1989) and Paint in Some Holes (1995). When discussing his process for selecting Oppenheim’s late work\, he noted\, “Splash Building (2009) was one of the first works I thought of when asked to choose from the Parrish’s permanent collection. I was attracted to its scale\, the combination of materials and mix of colors and light\, but most important\, its potential multiple interpretations: a building or a splash building\, a Pop artwork\, a three-dimensional drawing\, etc. My experience with it is always a delightful surprise.” Torreano’s subject matter of the universe is on full display with his sculptural paintings that evoke the vastness of the cosmos with their large\, jeweled panels\, a common feeling of Torreano’s evoked by Oppenheim’s oversized interpretation of a splashing water droplet. \n  \nFriday Nights are made possible\, in part\, by The Corcoran Group.

SUMMARY:Book Reading with Kathleen King
DESCRIPTION:*Registration for this event has closed. All available spots are reserved.*  \nThe event is free with museum admission. Space is limited\, advance registration is required. \nPlease join us as we celebrate the deliciousness of everyone’s favorite snack!  We will make felt cookies and listen to Kathleen King as she reads from her new book\, Cookie Queen: How One Girl Started Tate’s Bake Shop. Cookie Queen is the delicious true story of how a little girl’s dream turned into an enormous cookie empire. A perfect book for budding bakers\, cookie lovers\, and people with big dreams! Tate’s cookies will be served. \nNote: This is a family workshop and there is not a minimum age for this program\, but the project will have sewing elements that will require collaboration between family members. \n\n\nAbout the Author \n\nEleven-year-old Kathleen King was positively obsessed with baking the perfect chocolate chip cookie. She experimented over and over and over with different recipes–less flour\, more butter\, longer baking time–until she got it just right. Customers flocked to her family’s farm stand on Long Island for Kathleen’s enormous\, buttery chocolate chip cookies. And when she grew up\, Kathleen started a cookie company called TATE’S BAKE SHOP®. TATE’S grew into a multi-million-dollar empire and\, today\, they are a household name\, and their cookies are sold all over the country.

SUMMARY:Private Tour at the Frick Madison
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nJoin Members at the Patron level and above for a private tour at the Frick Madison\, the temporary home of The Frick Collection. The tour will include highlights of their permanent collection and an introduction to their special exhibition\, Barkley L. Hendricks: Portraits at the Frick. Barkley L. Hendricks (1945—2017) revolutionized contemporary portraiture with his vivid depictions of Black subjects that emphasize the dignity and individuality of his sitters. Beginning in the late 1960s\, his work drew from the challenged traditions of European art\, and The Frick Collection—with its iconic portraits by Rembrandt\, Bronzino\, Van Dyck\, and others—was one of his favorite museums. \nMore about the Frick Madison: “The Frick has created a sequence of gallery spaces at Frick Madison that reflects the museum’s traditional emphasis on intimate encounters with both art and architecture and allows direct access to objects without the interference of vitrines or stanchions.” – frick.org \nThis special opportunity for Parrish Members to glean new perspectives on old masters takes place when the Frick Madison is closed to the public. Event is being co-organized by Parrish Member and supporter\, Bobbie Braun. You must be a current Patron level member or above to register. \nMembers may bring up to one guest provided space is still available. Space is limited. Please contact Membership to register your guest. \nNot a Member? Join today!
