Directed by Eternal Polk \nJoin us for the 5th Annual Black Film Festival\, Part I\, as the Parrish continues its annual collaboration with the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center\, Suffolk County Office of Minority Health\, the Witness Project of Long Island\, and Black Public Media. The Black Film Festival\, Part I\, will screen Gaining Ground: The Fight for Black Land\, a new\, stirring documentary from Executive Producer Al Roker\, that examines the cause and effects of the issues and experiences of people impacted by land loss. \nThe Black Film Festival presents award-winning short and feature films and documentaries that highlight the work of black filmmakers as well as stories that describe and elevate black lives and experiences\, touching on current sociopolitical topics\, art\, music\, performance\, mental and physical health\, among others. Films are selected by a committee representing the Parrish Art Museum\, Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center\, the Witness Project of Long Island\, and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services\, Office of Minority Health\, as well as a small group of dedicated individuals. \nAbout the Film\nBy 1910\, Black Americans had amassed 60 million acres of farmland. In 2023\, that number has dropped to 3.9 million acres. Violence\, eminent domain\, and government discrimination—all had an impact. But it is a little-known issue\, Heirs’ Property which has had a devastating effect on Black land ownership. The screening is followed by a Q&A with Producer Jacqueline Sischy\, as well as a light reception and poster reveal for the 32nd Annual Hamptons International Film Festival\, created by renowned contemporary artist Mary Heilmann. \nAbout Mary Heilmann\nBorn in 1940 in San Francisco\, California\, Mary Heilmann earned a BA from the University of California\, Santa Barbara (1962)\, and an MA from the University of California\, Berkeley (1967). She moved to New York the following year\, in 1968. Since then\, Heilmann’s work has appeared in three Whitney Biennial exhibitions (1972\, 1989\, 2008) and is included in the permanent collections of many museums worldwide\, including the Museum of Modern Art\, Whitney Museum of American Art\, San Francisco MoMA\, National Gallery of Art\, the Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht\, Netherlands\, and the Städel Museum in Frankfurt\, Germany. \nHeilmann’s work is in the permanent collection of the Parrish\, and she most recently participated in Artists Choose Parrish\, Part I\, in 2023. In collaboration with Hamptons JazzFest\, Jazz at Lincoln Center presents four thrilling concerts this summer at the Parrish’s expansive campus\, bringing world-class jazz performances and artists to the East End. The concerts will be held on the Mildred C. Brinn Terrace and Event Lawn. Guests are strongly encouraged to bring outdoor chairs and blankets as no Museum seating is provided. Outdoor coolers and outside food are prohibited; food and beverages are available to purchase at the Parrish Café. \nSummer Jazz on the Terrace concludes with a performance by the Sarah Hanahan Quartet. Hanahan is an up-and-coming jazz saxophonist in New York City and a graduate of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the Hartt School of Music where she received her Bachelor’s degree in 2019\, as well as The Juilliard School where she received her Master’s degree in 2022. She has studied with well-known performers Abraham Burton\, Nat Reeves\, Steve Davis\, Billy Drummond\, and Marc Cary. Hanahan tours both nationwide and internationally with her own band and plays regularly in renowned venues around NYC such as Dizzy’s\, Smoke Jazz Club\, Smalls\, and more. A generational talent on the rise\, Hanahan was recently featured in the first-ever class of NPR Jazz Night in America’s Youngbloods alongside Samara Joy\, Immanuel Wilkins\, Isaiah J. Thompson\, and Sean Mason. The series features “five up-and-coming jazz geniuses who are revolutionizing their genre” – all of whom are under the age of 30. Her debut album\, Sarah Hanahan: Among Giants\, featuring Marc Cary\, Nat Reeves\, and Jeff Watts will be released under Jazz at Lincoln Center’s label\, Blue Engine\, on June 21st\, 2024. \nNote: In the event of severely inclement weather\, ticket holders will be notified as soon as possible. From 10:30 AM to 1 PM\, join the Imagination Play Project in a pop-up workshop and build using recycled materials. The Imagination Play Project creates opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to engage\, design\, and connect with open-ended materials and play. \nLinda White is the founder and creator of Imagination Play Project. As a play curator\, her focus began with young children and has grown to working with people of all ages and abilities. Registration is closed.*\nFor the 2024 Parrish Road Show\, the Parrish Art Museum has invited Andrea Cote to create a site-specific exhibition at Bridge Gardens in Bridgehampton. Now in its thirteenth year\, Parrish Road Show is the Museum’s off-site project designed to encourage engagement and interaction between artists and the communities beyond the Museum’s walls. To Belong to the World will be an outdoor installation composed of uniquely printed fabric and bamboo structures that complement and highlight the Garden’s landscape. The work continues Cote’s exploration of her connection with the environment through daily exposed cyanotypes reflecting the sun\, cosmos\, and body. \nAn opening reception will be held on Saturday\, September 14\, 2024 at 2 PM at Bridge Gardens. Andrea Cote\, along with Parrish Associate Curator and Publications Manager Kaitlin Halloran will introduce the exhibition with brief remarks. Light refreshments will be served. \nPlease note: Parking at Bridge Gardens is limited.
