SUMMARY:Member Preview | Eddie Martinez: Buflies and Sam Moyer: Ferns Teeth
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n11 AM | Reception\n12 PM | Introductory talk with Chief Curator Corinne Erni and the artists \nMuseum Members are invited to celebrate the opening of Eddie Martinez: Buflies and Sam Moyer: Ferns Teeth. At 12 PM\, join us for an introductory talk between Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator of Art and Education\, and the artists. Advanced registration is required. \nNot a Parrish member? Join today →\n  \nCelebrated for his bright\, bold\, and colorful paintings\, Eddie Martinez will present a new body of work made specifically for the Parrish. Taking full advantage of the Museum’s expansive space and high ceilings\, Martinez is creating seven 12-foot tall Bufly paintings. Like much of his work\, these canvases are imbued with a personal iconography. The artist started the Bufly series in 2021 when his son Arthur who was two at the time became fascinated with butterflies\, mispronouncing them as “buflies.” Martinez has been painting them ever since. \nEddie Martinez: Buflies is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs\, with additional support from Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator. \nFollowing on the heels of the publication of her first career-spanning monograph\, Sam Moyer’s solo exhibition at the Parrish Art Museum will showcase the artist’s relationship to material and light as a throughline in her practice\, displaying the range of her processes\, and bodies of work\, across three galleries. Focusing each space on a specific material relationship\, Moyer presents a large-scale stone painting tailor-fit to the architecture of the room\, sculptural photographs whose composition are specific to the landscape of Eastern Long Island\, and a series of smaller\, more representational wall works. Consistent with Moyer’s habit of manifesting a directly tactile experience with the visual materials at hand\, two of the three galleries will be outfitted with artist-made marble benches and visitors will be able to play on hand-cast concrete backgammon boards in the Museum’s lobby. \nSam Moyer: Ferns Teeth is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs\, with additional support from Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator. \nExhibition Support\nEddie Martinez: Buflies is made possible\, in part\, thanks to the generous support of The Evelyn Toll Family Foundation\, Yanina Fuertes\, and a donor who wishes to remain Anonymous. \nSam Moyer: Ferns Teeth is made possible\, in part\, thanks to the generous support of Jacqueline Brody; The Deborah Buck Foundation; Linda Hackett and Melinda Hackett/ CAL Foundation; Sean Kelly\, New York/Los Angeles; BLUM; The Evelyn Toll Family Foundation; Herman Goldman Foundation; Lauren and Steven P. Schwartz; Yanina Fuertes; Allison and Donald Weiss; Karen and Dennis Mehiel; and a donor who wishes to remain Anonymous. \nThe Parrish Art Museum’s programs are made possible\, in part\, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature\, and by the property taxpayers from the Southampton School District and the Tuckahoe Common School District.

SUMMARY:Jazz | Sean Mason Quintet
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \n$35 Members | $45 Adults & Resident Passholders | $40 Seniors | $25 Students | $15 Children (17 & Under) \n*Update as of 8/2/2024: We realize that some ticketed guests were unable to attend the August 2 Jazz on the Terrace concert due to local traffic disruptions. Ticketed guests\, please email info@parrishart.org to reschedule your unused August 2 Jazz tickets for one of our upcoming performances (August 16 or September 6.)* \nSummer Jazz on the Terrace returns this July through September 2024! In collaboration with Hamptons JazzFest\, Jazz at Lincoln Center presents four thrilling concerts this summer at the Parrish’s expansive campus\, bringing world-class jazz performances and artists to the East End. The concerts will be held on the Mildred C. Brinn Terrace and Event Lawn. Guests are strongly encouraged to bring outdoor chairs and blankets as no Museum seating is provided. Outdoor coolers and outside food are prohibited; food and beverages are available to purchase at the Parrish Café. \nJoin us Friday August 2nd for a performance by the Sean Mason Quintet. Born and raised in Charlotte\, North Carolina\, Sean Mason took to the piano at the late age of 13\, teaching himself by ear to play the styles of music he was most attracted to. His approach quickly evolved into a highly original language. Mason’s unique voice in jazz is steeped in the sound of the South\, allowing an extended time for groove while also displaying a vocabulary far beyond his years. As a bandleader\, he leads the Sean Mason Quintet\, a band assembled to play Sean’s original music\, which has been described as highly melodic and infectious. \n“I first got into music by going to church every Sunday\, but the movie Ray was the catalyst for me to actually begin playing piano\,” recalls Mason. “My grandmother gifted me a small Casio piano and from there I began teaching myself to play\, studying for countless hours and devoting concentrated time on developing my sound.” During his time in North Carolina\, Sean met jazz legend Branford Marsalis\, who was immediately taken by Sean’s musicality and recommended he move to New York. “I told my brother [Wynton Marsalis]\, ‘Be on the lookout for this kid\,’” Marsalis recalls. Upon his arrival\, Sean hit the ground running\, quickly securing performances and residencies at some of New York’s most prestigious jazz clubs\, all while attending The Juilliard School. \nNote: In the event of severely inclement weather\, ticket holders will be notified as soon as possible. Please be advised that outside food is not permitted in the Museum or on the Terrace/Event Lawn; food\, beverages\, and cocktails are available for purchase in the Parrish Café. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is strongly recommended. Limited tickets will be available at the door. All sales are final and non-refundable. \nFriday Nights are generously supported by The Corcoran Group. Piano sponsorship for Jazz on the Terrace is provided by Yamaha Artist Services\, Inc. \n

SUMMARY:Film & Talk | Giving Birth In America: Arkansas
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$10 Members | $20 Adults & Resident Benefit Pass | $18 Seniors | $15 Member’s Guest | Free for Students & Children \nJoin us for a screening of the short film Giving Birth in America: Arkansas followed by a panel conversation with exhibiting artists Julia Chiang\, Sam Moyer\, and Every Mother Counts founder and president Christy Turlington Burns. The film follows three mothers as they grapple with mental health concerns\, lack of paid leave\, and other challenges in the days\, weeks\, and months following birth\, vividly painting a picture of the gaps in the current landscape of postpartum care. The film highlights the essential role of community-based support\, especially within historically marginalized communities. Julia Chiang and Sam Moyer will be joined in conversation with Christy Turlington Burns as they discuss themes in the film\, their approach to work as mothers\, and how their maternal experiences affect and inspire their art. \nGiving Birth in America: Arkansas is the seventh chapter in Every Mother Counts’ Giving Birth in America film series. This film spotlights Arkansas\, the state with the highest maternal mortality rate across the United States. The short film vividly paints a picture of the reality of the postpartum experience. More than half of all maternal deaths take place during the postpartum period\, yet this stage of pregnancy is often overlooked. \nAbout Julia Chiang\nJulia Chiang (American\, b. 1978) lives and works in Brooklyn\, New York and studied Studio Art and Art History at New York University. Chiang has recently been featured in solo-exhibitions at Nanzuka Underground\, Tokyo\, Nicola Vassell Gallery\, New York\, The Modern Institute\, Glasgow\, and The Journal Gallery\, New York. In 2022\, Chiang was commissioned by Rockaway Hotel and Spa for the “Rockaway Mural” in Queens\, NY. She has been an artist-in-residence at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village\, Colorado\, The Creative Centre at Mount Sinai Hospital\, Henry Street Settlement in New York\, HAP Clay Studios in Beijing\, and Vermont Studio Center in Johnson\, Vermont. \nAbout Sam Moyer\nSam Moyer (American\, b. 1983) received her BFA from the Corcoran College of Art and Design and her MFA from Yale University. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at the Bass Museum\, Miami; the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis; the Drawing Center\, New York; the FLAG Art Foundation\, New York; the Hill Art Foundation\, New York; LAND\, Los Angeles; MoMA PS1\, Queens; the Parrish Art Museum\, New York; Tensta Konsthall\, Stockholm; Wexner Center for the Arts\, Columbus; and White Flag Projects\, St. Louis. Freedman Plaza in Central Park\, New York from September 2020 through October 2021. Her recent solo exhibitions include Memory Mine (2023) at the Jule Collins Smith Museum\, Auburn; Relief (2022) at Rodolphe Janssen\, Brussels; Good Friend (2021) at Kayne Griffin\, Los Angeles; and Tone (2021) at Sean Kelly Gallery\, New York. \nMoyer’s work is featured in prominent public collections\, including the Davis Museum\, Wellesley College\, Massachusetts; the Morgan Library & Museum\, New York; the Museum of Modern Art\, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York; the Yale University Art Gallery\, New Haven; the Aïshti Foundation\, Beirut; and the Louis Vuitton Foundation\, Paris. \nAbout Every Mother Counts\nMotivated by the belief that maternal health is a human right\, Every Mother Counts works to advance evidence-based strategies to address the global maternal health crisis and improve maternal health outcomes and the experience of care for all. EMC supports community-centered care and workforce development by raising awareness\, investing in community-led solutions\, and advocating for critical systems change. Outdoor coolers and outside food are prohibited; food and beverages are available to purchase at the Parrish Café. \nJoin us Friday\, August 16th for a performance by the Ekep Nkwelle Quartet. Vocalist Ekep Nkwelle\, a 24-year-old Cameroonian-American jazz vocalist\, entrances audiences with her strong lyrical presence and an uncanny connection to phrasing that’s at once grounded and ethereal. Nkwelle\, Washington DC-born and New York-based\, has trained at Duke Ellington School of the Arts\, Howard University\, and The Juilliard School and worked alongside jazz masters such as Russell Malone\, Cyrus Chestnut\, and Peter Washington. She was also featured at Radio City Music Hall with renowned classical pianist Lang Lang in collaboration with Disney. She has performed at Lincoln Center\, The Kennedy Center\, and Newport and Montclair jazz festivals\, but most notably\, she was featured in 2022 on NPR’s Tiny Desk singing her arrangement of Geri Allen’s “Timeless Portraits and Dreams.” Nkwelle is one of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s rising stars\, and with her artistry\, she strives to display her passion for music worldwide. \n
