DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$15 Members | $25 Adults | $15 Seniors\, Students | $5 Children | $15 Member’s Guest \nSummer Jazz on the Terrace concludes its outdoor concerts with a performance by the JD Allen Trio\, in collaboration with Hamptons Jazz Fest. \nAbout JD Allen\nHailed by the New York Times as “a tenor saxophonist with an enigmatic\, elegant and hard-driving style\,” JD Allen is a bright light on today’s international jazz scene. His unique and compelling voice on the instrument – the result of a patient and painstaking confrontation with the fundamentals of the art – has earned Allen years of critical attention signaling his ascension to the upper ranks of the contemporary jazz world. Originally from Detroit\, Allen’s apprenticeship\, anchored by his lengthy tenure with Betty Carter\, occurred largely in New York\, where he worked with legends Lester Bowie\, George Cables\, Ron Carter\, Louis Hayes\, Frank Foster Big Band\, Winard Harper\, Dave Douglas\, Cindy Blackman\, Butch Morris\, David Murray\, Wallace Roney\, Rufus Reid\, and Geri Allen. In 2008\, Allen began an association with Sunnyside Records to record his new trio\, coined the “Three Headed Monster” (Burning Ambulance)\, for I AM – I AM\, featuring Gregg August\, bass\, and Rudy Royston\, drums. \nAbout Hamptons Jazz Fest\nHamptons Jazz Fest\, produced by The Jam Session\, Inc\, is a series of performances that bring world-class musicians in the fields of Jazz\, Latin\, and World music to a diverse cross-section of populations in the East End of Long Island\, held in iconic venues throughout July\, August and September. Collaborating with regional non-profit cultural organizations\, Hamptons Jazz Fest presents dozens of concerts at an affordable rate and engages the diverse groups of the East End in their performance and educational events. \nThis is an outdoor concert on the Museum’s Terrace and event lawn; no museum seating is provided. Please note that outside food and coolers are not permitted at the Museum or on the Terrace; snacks\, beverages\, and picnic baskets are available to purchase from the Parrish Cafe.  \nSupport for Friday Nights at the Parrish Art Museum is provided by The Corcoran Group. The Parrish Summer Concert Program as part of Hamptons Jazz Fest is generously supported by The SmallsLIVE Foundation and Klavierhaus.

SUMMARY:OLA Latino Film Festival | The Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nJoin us for the 20th Anniversary of the OLA Latino Film Festival and partnership with the Parrish Art Museum with a screening of The Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future (2022)\, followed by a live Zoom interview with Director Francisca Alegría. The program begins with a bilingual tour of the Museum’s exhibitions\, James Brooks: A Painting is a Real Thing\, and Artists Choose Parrish\, followed by the film screening and Director’s Q&A in the Museum’s Lichtenstein Theater. \n6 PM\, Bilingual Tour and Reception\, Galleries and Café\n7 PM\, Introduction and Film Screening\, Theater\n8:30 PM\, Director’s Zoom Q&A \nAbout the Film\nThe Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future\, 2022\, 93 min.\, Spanish with English subtitles\, Directed by Francisca Alegría. \nA choir of creatures introduces a world delicately constructed by fantasy\, mystery\, and magical realism in Francisca Alegría’s poignant and stunning debut feature. It begins in a river in the south of Chile where fish are dying due to pollution from a nearby factory. Amid their floating bodies\, long-deceased Magdalena (Mia Maestro\, Frida\, The Motorcycle Diaries) bubbles up to the surface gasping for air\, bringing with her old wounds and a wave of family secrets. This shocking return sends her widowed husband into turmoil and prompts their daughter Cecilia to return home to the family’s dairy farm with her own children. Magdalena’s presence reverberates among her family\, instigating fits of laughter and despair in equal measure with all but Cecilia’s eldest child\, who finds much-needed comfort in their grandmother’s love and unconditional understanding during a time of transition. A lyrical rumination on family\, nature\, renewal\, and resurrection\, The Cow Who Sang A Song Into The Future is an ambitious proposal for acceptance and healing\, suggesting that the dead return when they are most needed. \nAbout the Director\nFrancisca Alegría is an award-winning filmmaker who obtained her degree in Directing from the Universidad Católica de Chile and her M.F.A. in Screenwriting and Film Directing at Columbia University. Her short film AND THE WHOLE SKY FIT IN THE DEAD COW’S EYE received the award for Best International Fiction Short Film at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival\, Best Latin American Short Film at Miami Film Festival and was selected at Telluride Film Festival\, Toronto International Film Festival\, and New York Film Festival. SUMMARY:Talk | THE SLIP: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$5 Members | $16 Adults (Nonmembers) | $12 Seniors | Free for Students\, Children \nJoin us for a reading and presentation by author Prudence Peiffer following the recent release of her book The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever\, the never-before-told story of an obscure little street at the lower tip of Manhattan and the remarkable artists who got their start there. Recently reviewed by The New York Times\, THE SLIP delves into six visual artist biographies\, tenderly researched with an interpretive mood that echoes the debate on a philosophical approach to art making\, with “a neighborhood-eye view of art history” (Walker Mimms\, New York Times\, 2023). Peiffer’s publication includes profiles of several Parrish permanent collection artists – Agnes Martin\, James Rosenquist\, and Jack Youngerman\, alongside Robert Indiana\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Delphine Seyrig\, and Lenore Tawney. Peiffer will read excerpts from the book and discuss several of the artists\, their works\, and historical photo references. \nAbout THE SLIP\nFor just over a decade\, from 1956 to 1967\, a collection of dilapidated former sail-making warehouses clustered at the lower tip of Manhattan became the quiet epicenter of the art world. Coenties Slip\, a dead-end street near the water\, was home to a circle of wildly talented and varied artists that included Robert Indiana\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Agnes Martin\, James Rosenquist\, Delphine Seyrig\, Lenore Tawney\, and Jack Youngerman. As friends and inspirations to one another\, they created a unique community for unbridled creative expression and experimentation\, and the works they made at the Slip would go on to change the course of American art. \nNow\, for the first time\, Prudence Peiffer pays homage to these artists and the unsung impact their work had on the direction of late twentieth-century art and film. This remarkable biography\, as transformative as the artists it illuminates\, questions the very concept of a “group” or “movement\,” as it spotlights the Slip’s eclectic mix of gender and sexual orientation\, abstraction and Pop\, experimental film\, painting\, and sculpture\, assemblage and textile works. \nAbout Prudence Peiffer\nPrudence Peiffer is an art historian\, writer\, and editor\, specializing in modern and contemporary art. She is the Director of Content at MoMA\, New York. She received her Ph.D from Harvard University; following a postdoctoral fellowship at Columbia University\, she was a Senior Editor at Artforum magazine from 2012-2017\, and Digital Content Director at David Zwirner in 2018. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times\, The New York Review of Books online\, Artforum\, and Bookforum\, among other publications. \nSupport for Friday Nights at the Parrish Art Museum is provided by The Corcoran Group.
