SUMMARY:Film & Performance: 4 Little Girls: Moving Portraits of the American Civil Rights Movement
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nJoin us for a special program\, including film and live performance with African drummers and dancers\, in collaboration with the Edge School of the Arts (ESOTA) and co-presented with the Hampton United Methodist Church. \n4 Little Girls: Moving Portraits of the American Civil Rights Movement is an experimental narrative film that infuses historical authenticity\, contemporary dance movements (tap\, modern dance\, hip hop\, and ballet) choreographed to spoken word and 60’s protest songs to recant the horrific story of Addie Mae Collins\, Denise McNair\, Carole Robertson\, and Cynthia Wesley\, the four young black girls who were violently murdered by the Ku Klux Klan when a bomb exploded in the basement of the Black 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham\, Alabama\, on September 15\, 1963. \nThe story unfolds through the imaginative interpretations of present-day performing arts students whose teacher challenges them to go back in time and recreate the moments leading up to what Martin Luther King Jr. described as\, “one of the most vicious and tragic crimes ever perpetrated against humanity.” \nDuration: 45 minutes\, followed by a conversation. \nKerri Edge is an artivist who uses dance and film as vehicles to shed light on issues of social injustice and commemorate the achievements of African American people. She is Artistic Director of the Edge School of the Arts (ESOTA)\, which has dedicated itself to bringing the art and discipline of African American dance to young aspiring artists\, the community\, and international audiences. \nThe film is supported by Queens Council on the Arts\, New York State Council on the Arts\, and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs through awards made by Council Members Adrienne Adams (28th District)\, I. Daneek Miller (27th District)\, and Donovan Richards (31st District)

DESCRIPTION:Join fellow Parrish Contemporaries Circle Members for a private preview of Transition\, Beirut-based designer Najla El Zein’s first solo exhibition\, followed by a private tour of Larry Sultan: Domestic Theaterat Yancey Richardson.  Continue the fun with drinks and socializing at the Pinhook Bar located at the High Line Hotel. \nSpace is limited for this exclusive opportunity. \nAbout Najla El Zein: Najla El Zein (born Beirut\, 1983) graduated from Ecole Camondo\, Paris\, in Product Design and Interior Architecture. Her work has been exhibited internationally at The V&A museum and most recently at the exhibition Women + Design: New Works (October 28\, 2018 – February 17\, 2019) at the Dallas Museum of Art. El Zein’s Seduction\, Pair 01 was acquired by the Dallas Museum of Art for its permanent collection. El Zein currently lives and works in Beirut. \nAbout Larry Sultan:Larry Sultan grew up in California’s San Fernando Valley\, which became a source of inspiration for a number of his projects. His work blends documentary and staged photography to create images of the psychological as well as physical landscape of suburban family life.  Sultan’s pioneering book and exhibition Pictures From Home (1992) was a decade long project that features his own mother and father as its primary subjects\, exploring photography’s role in creating familial mythologies. Using this same suburban setting\, his book\, The Valley (2004) examined the adult film industry and the area’s middle-class tract homes that serve as pornographic film sets. \nThis free event is for Parrish Contemporaries Circle Members and invited guests.  Not a Member?  Join today! \nFor more information or to register over the phone\, please\ncall the Parrish Membership department at 631-283-2118 x149.
