SUMMARY:Optic Garden | Preview at Exhibition The Barn
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nParrish Contemporaries Circle members are invited to join Frampton Co for open-air cocktails and an exclusive preview of Optic Garden\, presented in collaboration with The Rug Company\, at Exhibition The Barn in Bridgehampton. Optic Garden showcases art and design in equal measure with rugs designed by leading creatives for The Rug Company\, including “Undercover\,” a new bespoke rug designed by Elena Frampton\, Principal at Frampton Co\, alongside contemporary paintings by Christine Keefe\, and ceramics by Kalya O’Donoghue. \nInspired to bring an element of the three-dimensional to a typically two-dimensional object\, Elena Frampton designed “Undercover” using a trompe l’oeil effect. The design marries optical illusion with traditional ornamentation\, as a floral-patterned rug appears to peel back from the floor at opposing corners\, offering both a decorative and architectural statement within interior space. Echoing the inspiration behind “Undercover\,” the exhibition recontextualizes form\, function\, and ornamentation in the display. Rugs cascade down the wall and onto the floor\, putting the artistry and creative vision of the designs in full view. The selection of rugs\, curated by Elena Frampton\, includes creative perspectives across a range of industries with additional designs by Diane von Furstenberg\, Rodarte\, Mary Katrantzou\, Paul Smith\, Sarabande\, and The Rug Company. \nAbout Exhibition\n\nA stone’s throw from the ocean\, Exhibition The Barn is situated in the serene hamlet of Bridgehampton in Long Island\, New York. SUMMARY:Film & Talk | Sag Harbor SANS Community
DESCRIPTION:$16 Adults | $12 Seniors | $10 Members | $5 for Students\, Children \nREGISTER \nIn celebration of Juneteenth and the rich legacy of our local communities\,  and presented in collaboration with Eastville Community Historical Society and the Southampton African American Museum\, the Parrish will screen two short films focused on the  historic SANS neighborhoods of Sag Harbor\, followed by a panel discussion. The program includes screenings of HOME: Long Island: Sag Harbor (Season 2\, Ep. 5\, 35 minutes) from AppleTV\, and A Beach of Our Own (9 minutes)\, produced by T—The New York Times Style Magazine. \nThe panel\, moderated by Brenda Simmons\, Executive Director of Southampton African American Museum\, features Renee Simons\, SANS Sag Harbor Organization President; Dr. Georgette Grier-Key\, Executive Director of Eastville Community Historical Society; Dr. Beverly Granger\, artist and SANS resident; and Sarah Kautz\, consultant\, cultural resources and preservation. The panelists will discuss the films and how SANS—an anagram for the communities of Sag Harbor Hills\, Azurest\, Ninevah\, and the subdivisions—came into being and have remained a haven for African American families on the East End for generations. \nIn addition to admission to the films and panel\, guests at the event may explore the exhibition Artists Choose Parrish Part I\, which includes work by artists who in the past or present have made SANS their home: Romare Bearden\, Nanette Carter\, Claude Lawrence\, Leslee Stradford\, and Frank Wimberley\, who is referenced in the T Magazine feature story. \nHOME: Long Island: Sag Harbor\, produced in 2022\, highlights the crusade of locals from SANS—one of the few remaining Black beachfront communities—to preserve their neighborhoods’ history and future. The film includes archival images and testimonials from residents whose families have summered in the area for generations. A Beach of Our Own\, produced in 2020\, provides a glimpse into the history of Sag Harbor’s Black communities—beginning with the Black men who secured work in the whaling industry in the 1800s\, through the founding of the black communities during the mid-1900s\, and the struggle to maintain those communities in the face of development. \nPublic programs are made possible\, in part\, by Weill-Cornell Medicine – Southampton and The Corcoran Group.

SUMMARY:Talk | Donna De Salvo on the early years of the Parrish
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$5 Members | $16 Adults (Non-Members) $12 Seniors | Free for Students\, Children \nAs part of a series of conversations recognizing the Museum’s rich history as a leading East End arts institution\, former Robert Lehman Curator Donna de Salvo will discuss its early years through the lens of her landmark 1992 exhibition\, A Museum Looks at Itself\, Mapping Past and Present at the Parrish Art Museum\, 1897-1992. Presented at the Parrish’s original home on Jobs Lane\, the exhibition surveyed the Museum’s beginnings as the Art Gallery of Southampton and  the Eurocentrism and politics of its founder\, Samuel Longstreth Parrish\, who envisioned his museum as a “mini-Metropolitan Museum\,” replete with Venetian panel paintings\, plaster casts\, and busts of the Roman Caesars. The exhibition extended into the decades of leadership by Rebecca Bolling Littlejohn who\, after Parrish’s death\, focused the collection on American art. \nWriting of De Salvo’s exhibition in a 1992 story in Art in America\, art historian Kenneth E. Silver noted\, “As staged by curator Donna De Salvo with contributions by artists Fred Wilson and Judith Barry\, the exhibition explored issues involving esthetic choice and period taste\, notions of art-historical authenticity and America’s onetime cultural inferiority complex as well as questions of class consciousness and racism. Not bad for a provincial museum.” \nUsing the Museum’s archives and collection\, along with artist interventions\, A Museum Looks at Itself was one attempt to reveal the often-concealed biases and beliefs that can shape the methodology and motives of a museum\, and through such inquiry bring about change. These interventions and self-interrogations are more urgent now than ever. Join De Salvo as she talks about this landmark exhibition as well as its relevance today. \nDonna De Salvo is a curator\, writer\, and consultant who has worked with numerous national and international artists and museum collections. De Salvo is currently Senior Adjunct Curator\, Special Projects\, Dia Art Foundation\, held several positions at the Whitney Museum of American Art\, becoming its first Chief Curator and Deputy Director for Programs where she oversaw the museum’s curatorial department and program of exhibitions and acquisitions. Known for her thematic exhibitions\, such as Open Systems: Rethinking Art c. 1970 (Tate Modern) and Hand-Painted Pop: American Art in Transition (1955-1962) (LAMoCA). De Salvo has also organized exhibitions or commissioned the work of Barbara Bloom\, John Chamberlain\, Roni Horn\, Anish Kapoor\, Barbara Kruger\, Steve McQueen\, Barnett Newman\, Hélio Oiticica\, Ed Ruscha\, Cy Twombly\, Lawrence Weiner\, and Joe Zucker\, amongst many others. De Salvo has held curatorial positions at Tate Modern\, London; the Wexner Center in Columbus\, Ohio; Dia Art Foundation\, in New York; and the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. In the 1990s\, she was the Robert Lehman Curator at the Parrish Art Museum\, where she organized numerous exhibitions\, including an installation on Job’s Lane of the work of Maren Hassinger. \nThe program will be recorded and later available on the Parrish Youtube Channel. \n  \nFriday Nights are supported in part by  The Corcoran Group

Narcissister deconstructs stereotypical representations by donning stripper gear\, pneumatic breasts\, outlandish wigs\, and trompe l’oeil costumes.
