Register for Salon Series concert here.  \nAbout the Exhibition: The Parrish Art Museum has invited Hank Willis Thomas\, a conceptual artist working with themes related to identity\, commodity\, media\, and popular culture\, and For Freedoms—the artist coalition he co-founded to model and increase creative civic engagement\, discourse\, and direct action—to create an exhibition specifically for the Museum. On view in the galleries\, outdoors on the Museum grounds\, and as digital billboards on the Shinnecock Monuments on Sunrise Highway\, Another Justice: US is Them includes nearly 30 works by 12 contemporary artists in mixed media\, sculpture\, site-specific installation\, wall painting\, and photography. The exhibition is a call to the community to reconvene\, and reconsider what justice can be in a time of imbalance. \nArtists include Zoë Buckman\, Pamela Council\, Jeremy Dennis\, Jeffrey Gibson\, Eric Gottesman\, Christine Sun Kim\, Muna Malik\, Joiri Minaya\, Koyoltzintli Miranda-Rivadeneira\, Kambui Olujimi\, Hank Willis Thomas\, and Marie Watt. \nAnother Justice: US is Them is organized by Corinne Erni\, Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs and Senior Curator\, with support from Brianna Hernández\, Curatorial Fellow\, and is co-curated by Hank Willis Thomas and Carly Fischer. \nLimited space; reservations required. \nAttendees at events held on the terrace or in the Museum’s theater\, café\, or studio are required to provide proof of full vaccination in order to maintain a mask-optional environment. \nNot a member but want to attend? Stott\, AIA\, LEED AP – Principal. Stott holds a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from Dowling College. After receiving a Master of Architecture Degree\, with Honors\, from CAL-POLY in 1983\, Stott moved back to the East Coast where he established his firm in 1988. He has been involved in hundreds of commercial and residential projects in California\, Vermont\, Connecticut\, Long Island and New York City. Locally\, Stott has designed several prominent projects including the Suffolk Theater Conversion\, the Southampton and Sag Harbor Police Stations\, new units at the Hampton Maid Motel\, and many small projects at Southampton hospital including the award-winning Centennial Hall. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nJoin us for a private tour of Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio\, a communal art space based on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation. The event will feature a conversation with Jeremy Dennis\, lead artist\, who will share the history of Ma’s House and its residency program for Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. In addition to Dennis’ work\, you will see “Point of Reference”\, the solo exhibition of new works by December resident artist\, Jacoub Reyes. \nJeremy Dennis. Photo by Lori Hawkins. \nJeremy Dennis is a contemporary fine art photographer and a tribal member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation. In his work\, he explores indigenous identity\, culture\, and assimilation\, and in 2018\, he participated in the Parrish Road Show with an exhibition at the Arts Center at Duck Creek\, East Hampton. He was one of 10 recipients of a 2016 Dreamstarter Grant from the national non-profit organization Running Strong for American Indian Youth. He was awarded $10\,000 to pursue his project\, On This Site\, which uses photography and an interactive online map to showcase culturally significant Native American sites on Long Island\, a topic of special meaning for Dennis\, who was raised on the Shinnecock Nation Reservation. \nJacoub Reyes is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Florida. He finds and makes materials and tools as part of an experimental aspect of his process. Reyes salvages and transforms found wood to reflect how marginalized and oppressed communities have been cast aside throughout history. With these\, he carves detailed large-scale allegorical woodcuts based on the acculturation of the Caribbean and the world at large. The concert is being offered free of charge thanks to the generosity of The Jam Session\, in collaboration with a major donor and life-long jazz enthusiast who celebrate this true American art form and the return of live music. You may also watch the livestream of the concert on our YouTube channel. \n \nMorris Goldberg was born in Cape Town\, South Africa. He came to New York to study at the Manhattan School of Music\, where he received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. \nGoldberg has worked and toured with Miriam Makeba\, Hugh Masekela\, and Harry Belafonte\, among many others. He recorded for Paul Simon on the Graceland album\, playing soprano sax and the pennywhistle solo on “You Can Call Me Al”. He also served as the woodwind specialist on The Rosie O’Donnell Show for the six years. Every morning\, the show would open with a shot of his Yamaha alto saxophone’s bell. In addition\, he played for many artists including Tony Bennett and Phil Collins. \nGoldberg formed his own group called Ojoyo\, which specializes in South African flavored jazz – Safrojazz. The group has recorded three albums of original music\, and played at many Jazz festivals and clubs throughout the United States with Hugh Masekela. \nHe teaches at the Ross School in East Hampton and performs throughout New York City and Long Island. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is required.\nAll tickets are sold pre-event and online only. The talk also features K-Sue Park\, Associate Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center; Kelly Dennis\, a member of the Shinnecock Nation and attorney specializing in Federal American Indian law; and Corinne Erni\, Senior Curator of ArtsReach and Special Projects\, who moderates the discussion. The Land Claim focuses on the historic and contemporary lived experiences of Indigenous\, Black\, and Latinx families on the East End of Long Island. She continues to represent individual tribe members on education law\, family law\, small business\, and other matters as an Of-Counsel Attorney with The Law Offices of Tela L. Troge\, PLLC located in Southampton\, New York. Dennis integrates her legal background with her passion for the arts through social justice advocacy efforts for the rights and welfare of indigenous peoples. As such\, she has served as the Public Programs & Residency Coordinator at The Watermill Center (WMC)\, an interdisciplinary laboratory for the arts and humanities located in Water Mill\, New York. \nK-Sue Park’s scholarship examines the creation of the American real estate system and the historical connections between property law\, immigration law\, and American Indian law. Prior to Georgetown\, she was the Critical Race Studies Fellow at UCLA School of Law and an Equal Justice Works Fellow and staff attorney in El Paso\, where she investigated predatory mortgage lending schemes. Park earned her B.A. summa cum laude\, Phi Beta Kappa honors from Cornell University\, where she was a College Scholar\, her M.Phil with Distinction in Social and Political Sciences from the University of Cambridge\, her J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School\, where she was a Presidential Scholar\, and her Ph.D. in Rhetoric from UC Berkeley\, where she was a Javits Fellow. A former Fulbright Scholar\, Park’s writings have appeared in the Harvard Law Review\, Law & Society Review\, and The New York Times. \nAbout Tomashi Jackson\nDrawing centrally from Josef Albers’s research on the relativity of color and the unconscious processes by which the brain organizes and reconciles information\, Jackson’s work bridges gaps between geometric experimentation and the systematization of injustice\, incorporating images printed and hand painted from photographs and materials chosen for their relevance into formalist compositions. She uses properties of color perception as an aesthetic strategy to investigate the value of human life in public space. Jackson’s research driven projects and visual interrogation of shared language around societal and chromatic color offers a narrative framework from which she constructs her own language of abstraction. \nTomashi Jackson was born in Houston and raised in Los Angeles. She earned her MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University School of Art in 2016; a Master of Science in Art\, Culture and Technology from the MIT School of Architecture and Planning in 2012\, and a BFA from Cooper Union in 2010. Her solo exhibitions include Forever My Lady at Night Gallery\, Los Angeles (2020)\, Time Out of Mind at Tilton Gallery (2019)\, Los Angeles \, Interstate Love Song at the Zuckerman Museum of Art\, Kennesaw\, Georgia (2018)\, and The Subliminal is Now at Tilton Gallery (2016). Please bring your own chairs\, no Museum seating is available.\nSeth Weaver has rapidly established a reputation as one of the most exciting new jazz names on the NYC jazz scene. Whether through his brilliant improvised trombone solos\, rich baritone vocals\, original compositions\, or his dedicated teaching\, his passion for music and unique talent shines through. Weaver’s latest project is a big band album titled “Truth\,” released in March 2020\, and was showcased at Birdland in an April 2020 concert. \nWeaver has performed at Dizzy’s\, Carnegie Hall\, Kennedy Center\, and Bass Performance Hall\, to name a few\, and has performed in Amsterdam and Dublin. He has shared the stage with Ben Folds\, Alfredo “Chocolate” Armenteros\, Larry Harlow\, Bucky Pizzarelli\, Michael Dease\, Ulysses Owens Jr.\, Adam Neely\, Luis Bonilla\, and Manhattan Transfer. He was featured as a guest artist with the New London Big Band\, and served as artist in residence at Millersville University. He appeared on TV for “An American Big Band Christmas\,” broadcast nationally. \nWeaver is a sought after composer and arranger and his music has been performed all over the world. His brilliant composition “Frost” debuted at Carnegie Hall in 2018\, as did his composition “The Hudson\,” in 2016. He composed the original score for the off-Broadway play\, “For What It’s Worth.” Weaver’s transcription and analysis of Michael Dease’s album “Coming Home” is available through Warwick Music Publications. \nOriginally from Tennessee\, Weaver was the winner of the Texas State Jazz Trombone Competition and was one of three finalists in the International Trombone Association’s Carl Fontana Jazz Competition two years in a row. He won the American Trombone Workshop’s National Jazz Competition in 2017. In addition to his big band album release\, Weaver has a Big Band EP and a single titled “Isle of Skye” for an Irish fusion project in the works. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is required.\nAll tickets are sold pre-event and online only. DESCRIPTION:Join Chief Curator Alicia G. Longwell in a livestream conversation with children’s book author Claire A. Nivola; Brooklyn-based artist Adrian Nivola; and Dr. Teresa Kittler\, Scholar-in-Residence at Magazzino as they explore the work of Ruth Nivola.\n\nRuth Guggenheim Nivola (American\, born Germany\, 1917–2008) grew up in Europe before settling in the U.S. in 1939 at the outbreak of World War II. She and her husband\, the Sardinian-born sculptor Costantino Nivola\, came to New York and eventually bought a small farmhouse in Springs\, East Hampton\, near friends and neighbors Saul Steinberg\, Frederick Kiesler\, and Harold Rosenberg. \nSome of Ruth Nivola’s extraordinary artwork\, whose richness of material\, craft\, and beauty defies such traditional categories as sculpture or ornament\, talisman or adornment\, is currently on view at the Parrish in the exhibition\,  Affinities for Abstraction: Women Artists on Eastern Long Island\, 1950-2020 and will be the subject of an in-depth conversation among those who know her work best: her daughter\, well−known children’s book author Claire A. Longwell and Michelle Stuart\, in a broad ranging exchange about the artist’s approach to nature and abstraction and how that process has evolved throughout her career. Her multifaceted body of work includes large-scale earth works\, complex multi-media installations\, earth drawings\, encaustic paintings\, sculptural objects\, drawings and prints. The photographic image has been an ancillary part of her work in the past; it is currently the primary medium. Stuart has also written and published artist’s books.
