Moderated by Museum Executive Director Mónica Ramírez-Montagut\, who holds a Ph.D. in architecture\, the discussion will explore the relationship between the Museum’s design from the architects’ perspective\, as well as from the viewpoint of an artist curating and exhibiting work in the space. \nThe innovative design by Herzog & de MeuronSenior Partner Mergenthaler and Studio Director Schmerbeck integrates architecture and landscape in a plan that both respects and reflects the singular natural beauty and rich artistic legacy of Long Island’s East End. Sited on 14 acres\, the purpose-built structure suggests the vernacular architecture of sheds and potato barns that for generations doubled as artist workspaces. Inspired by the light\, water\, and sky that create the unique atmosphere of the region\, the building features sky-lit galleries that mimic the light and proportions of typical artist’s studio. \n \nIn the exhibition Another Justice: US is Them\, on view through November 6\, Thomas along with other featured artists adopt dynamic and responsive approaches to activate the full volume of the architectural space. Thomas’s wall-sized works made from deconstructed flags envelop the gallery space in fabric. In the Spine\, Christine Sun Kim creates an immersive pathway between the galleries with bold\, vibrant notations from the American Sign Language. Outdoors on the building exterior and grounds\, Thomas activates the museum’s southern-facing façade with a 55–foot neon sign clearly visible from the highway. Muna Malik’s 20–foot longmirrored acrylic boat sited in the Museum’s Meadowentices visitors to venture into and explore the landscape. \nAbout Ascan Mergenthaler\nHerzog & de Meuron Senior Partner Ascan Mergenthaler is in charge of projects in Europe\, Asia\, and the Americas and has led the realization of the de Young Museum in San Francisco; the Parrish Art Museum on Long Island\, New York; the Tate Modern Project in London; the Blavatnik School of Government in Oxford; the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg; 56 Leonard Street in New York City; and Tai Kwun\, Centre for Heritage & Arts; as well as M+\, a cultural center for 20th and 21st century art\, design\, architecture\, and the moving image in Hong Kong. He is currently working on several high-profile projects\, such as the Neue Nationalgalerie—Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts in Berlin; and Triangle in Paris—the first high-rise since Tour Montparnasse—that will significantly contribute to the Parisian skyline. Mergenthaler first joined Herzog & de Meuron as an intern in 1993. After completing his studies at Stuttgart University and The Bartlett\, University College London\, he became an architect at Herzog & de Meuron in 1998 and Partner in 2004. \nAbout Philip Schmerbeck\nPhilip Schmerbeck is Studio Director USA at Herzog & de Meuron. He began his collaboration with the firm in Basel in 2007 and became an Associate in 2011. After relocating to the New York office in 2008\, he became project manager in charge of the Parrish Art Museum through its completion in 2012. Schmerbeck has maintained oversight of a diverse range of U.S. projects as Project Director\, including the completion of 215 Chrystie (Public Hotel) and160 Leroy Street in NYC. He is currently overseeing the Powerhouse Arts project\, a contemporary arts fabrication center nearing completion in Brooklyn\, New York\, and the Brooks Museum of Art in Memphis\, Tennessee. He became Studio Director USA in 2022. Schmerbeck studied Architecture at Mississippi State University\, Jackson\, Mississippi\, and graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree.  \nAbout Hank Willis Thomas\nHank Willis Thomas (b. 1976\, Plainfield\, NJ; lives and works in Brooklyn\, NY) is a conceptual artist working primarily with themes related to perspective\, identity\, commodity\, media\, and popular culture. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad including the International Center of Photography\, New York; Guggenheim Museum Bilbao\, Spain; Musée du quai Branly\, Paris; Hong Kong Arts Centre\, Hong Kong\, and the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art\, Netherlands. Thomas holds a B.F.A. from New York University\, New York\, NY (1998) and an M.A./M.F.A. from the California College of the Arts\, San Francisco\, CA (2004). Au Kim is honored to have a repertoire of clients from all over the world who have invited her into their spaces to create and collaborate “quality-of-life” decisions. In addition to designing Bridgehampton National Bank\, Lizan Tops Gallery\, and The Sway Club\, she has worked with NYT bestselling authors\, Victoria and Erik Van Lustbader\, and Dan Gasby and B. Smith. She has worked with professionals from finance\, fashion\, and film. What they all have in common is that they wanted their environments to embrace a peaceful\, serene space influenced by the creative energies of\, the ancient art of space alignment that encourages happiness\, good health\, and prosperity. \nDiana Pepi Stott is the founder of Pepi Design Group\, LLC established in Southampton\, NY in 2003. Her area of expertise is in Brand Identity and Development which are supported by a full range of multimedia services including Web Design\, Social Media Marketing\, Advertising and Signage. In addition to her own company\, Pepi Stott works very closely with her husband Richard Stott of Stott Architecture in creating Graphics\, Wayfinding\, Signage and Exhibition Design for municipalities\, hospitals\, and commercial buildings. Diana sits on the Parrish Art Museum’s Business Member Council\, is on the Board of the Hampton Bays Chamber of Commerce and is a Docent for the Southampton History Museum’s Annual House and Garden Tours. \nRichard F. Stott\, AIA\, LEED AP – Principal. Stott holds a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from Dowling College. After receiving a Master of Architecture Degree\, with Honors\, from CAL-POLY in 1983\, Stott moved back to the East Coast where he established his firm in 1988. He has been involved in hundreds of commercial and residential projects in California\, Vermont\, Connecticut\, Long Island and New York City. Locally\, Stott has designed several prominent projects including the Suffolk Theater Conversion\, the Southampton and Sag Harbor Police Stations\, new units at the Hampton Maid Motel\, and many small projects at Southampton hospital including the award-winning Centennial Hall. His award winning\, innovative designs include numerous sustainability and design awards. Stott is known for his custom-made furniture\, built ins\, architectural details\, and solar installations. He is a sustainability expert and concentrates his focus on daylighting\, carbon reduction and High-Performance Buildings. \n

The format is simple: each invited presenter gets 20 images x 20 seconds per image to talk about living creatively. This is a great opportunity to establish new relationships\, learn about local resources\, and hear from the many creatives who call Long Island home. \nParticipants: Shelter Island School teacher Catherine Brigham and student Margaret Schultheis; Southampton High School teacher Pamela Collins and student Talus Pinto; Bridgehampton School teacher Robin Gianis and students Luna Paucar and Pearl Ann V. Cherry Brown; and East Hampton High School teacher Margaret Zubarriain with student Kym Bermeo. \n  \nABOUT THE PRESENTERS \nSHELTER ISLAND UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT \nCatherine Brigham teaches art to 15 grade levels\, ranging from 3–19 years old. Brigham earned an undergraduate degree in Art and Design in Education from Pratt Institute\, and a Master’s in Teaching Students with Disabilities from Long Island University. She lives on Shelter Island full time. \nMargaret Schultheis\, in the 11th grade\, is currently participating in the drama club and art club. Her plans for the future include tattooing and illustration. \nSOUTHHAMPTON HIGH SCHOOL \nPamela Collins has an MFA in Painting/ Drawing from Brooklyn College and both a BFA in Painting/Drawing and a BS in Art Education from SUNY New Paltz. At Southampton\, she teaches Studio in Art\, Mural Painting and Set Design\, Drawing and Painting\, College Level Drawing\, Advanced Painting\, and Portfolio Development. Collins also teaches classes at the Parrish Art Museum. \nTalus Pinto\, who works in photography\, is a senior at SHS and plans to attend the School of Visual Arts in New York City upon graduation. Pinto has been part of the SHS’s art club for 4 years and is grateful for his participation in the club. His hope for those seeing his work is\, “I hope you embrace my vision of the world through the fine arts of photography.” \nBRIDGEHAMPTON SCHOOL \nOriginally from Cambridge\, MA\, art teacher Robin Gianis found her way to the East End after graduating from Sarah Lawrence College. After an early career in retail management\, she transitioned into art education. She has taught K-12 at the Bridgehampton School and has served on the Parrish Art Museum Education Committee. A ceramic artist\, Gianis will be featured in the event Encounters with Artists: Insights into the Artistic Process at the Parrish Art Museum. \nLuna Paucar is a junior at the Bridgehampton High School whose interests include design and ceramics. This year\, she contributed to the design portions of Student Council\, National Honor Society\, Culture Club\, and the Robotics team. Paucar’s favorite subjects are Marimba and art\, and she shares these talents with friends and family from Honduras and Ecuador. By combining her culture\, Marimba\, and art\, Paucar’s goal is to attend the Rhode Island School of Design. \nOne of Pearl Ann V. Cherry Brown’s favorite classes is studio art\, and she especially loves to make props out of cardboard. She spends much of her time drawing\, and her hobbies include crafting and listening to music. \nEAST HAMPTON HIGH SCHOOL \nMargaret Zubarriain graduated from Parsons/New School of Design with a BFA in Illustration. She worked as an intern prop builder for The Jim Henson Company\, a set painter for Women’s Expressive Theater in New York\, and created murals in the Bronx\, Manhattan\, and most recently a large commission at Gurney’s in Montauk. A mother of two\, Zubarriain is in her sixth year teaching Drawing\, Painting\, and Sculpture at East Hampton High School. \nSenior Kym Bermeo\, a Latinx queer artist who lives in Springs and participates in the art club at East Hampton High School\, is member of the Teen Arts Council at Guild Hall\, and works at The Golden Eagle Art supply store. Bermeo’s goal through her work is to shine light on the hardships of her community and their identity. DESCRIPTION:IN-PERSON   LIVESTREAM\nIn the Lichtenstein Theater and Livestreamed \nOn the second evening of a two-part program in recognition of Black History Month\, the Parrish Art Museum in collaboration with Eastville Community Historical Society will present a panel discussion on the noted artistic pioneer and activist Gordon Parks\, his significant contributions and achievements in the field of photography\, and his lasting influence on photographers. \nDr. Georgette Grier-Key\, Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Eastville Community Historical Society\, will be joined by Donnamarie Barnes\, Director of History and Heritage at Sylvester Manor Educational Farm in Shelter Island\, and Steven John Irby\, Co-Founder & Director of Street Dreams magazine\, in a conversation surrounding the art of the photograph and its transformational power in documenting and amplifying social\, cultural\, racial\, and political issues and movements of the day. Parks’ unique style of photography and filmmaking is an enduring body of work that constantly informs us. The panelists—artists and photographers in their own right—will reexamine Parks’ work and talk about various techniques of photography and strategies for storytelling. \n  \nABOUT THE PANELISTS \nDr. Georgette Grier-Key is the Executive Director and Chief Curator of Eastville Community Historical Society of Sag Harbor and has worked in various museums\, historical societies\, and service organizations with a focus on organizational sustainability. She currently serves on the board of the Museum Association of New York and the board of the Preservation League of New York State. Additionally\, Dr. Grier-Key dedicates herself to her community by leading and serving on local and regional boards such as the NAACP Brookhaven Town Branch where she is the duly elected President. Dr. Grier- Key is an adjunct assistant professor at CUNY Medgar Evers College and the director of the Long Island History Institute at SUNY Nassau Community College. Dr. Grier-Key is a historian\, preservationist\, and curator\, using her skills and experience as an organizer and activist to further the agenda of inclusion in traditional frameworks that have practiced institutional and structural exclusion. She is a not-for-profit management specialist and practitioner with more than 20 years of experience in both business and non-profit organizations. She provides consultant services from small to mid-sized organizations including several municipalities. \n Donnamarie Barnes joined Sylvester Manor in 2014 as a volunteer and history docent\, in 2016 became the Curator & Archivist\, and now serves as the Director of History & Heritage. Over the past four years\, she has curated exhibitions at the Sylvester Manor house including Women of the Manor\, A Place in Pictures\, and All That Has Been: Our Roots Revealed. Her ongoing work of conserving the various collections\, researching and uncovering the lives and identities of the enslaved and indigenous people of Sylvester Manor is an integral part of the organization’s mission to preserve\, cultivate and share the stories of all the people of Sylvester Manor. Barnes is also Co-Director of the Plain Sight Project\, which is dedicated to uncovering\, naming\, and counting the enslaved people of the East End of Long Island. In 2015\, she curated a highly acclaimed historic tintype photography exhibition at the Eastville Community Historical Society in Sag Harbor\, entitled Collective Identity. For over thirty years Barnes worked in the editorial photography field as a photographer and photo editor for publications such as People and Essence magazines and as a photo editor at the Gamma Liaison news photo agency. A life-long summer and full-time resident of Nineveh Beach in the historic SANS Community in Sag Harbor\, Barnes grew up photographing the community and the beach landscape\, and photography remains at the heart of all of her work. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography from the Cooper Union School of Art. \nSteven John Irby (A.K.A. Steve Sweatpants) is an artist cut directly from the cloth of Brooklyn and Queens. Photographer\, creative consultant\, and aspiring director\, Irby is an artist of the people\, dissolving the arbitrary division between low brow and high brow. His stunning black and white photographs invoke the spirit of Henri Cartier-Bresson but with a modern twist. As a result\, Irby has been called the 21st-century heir of The Decisive Moment. To experience Irby’s work is “to catch the name of God as in a dream—fleeting\, dazzling\, genuflecting.” Irby proves art need not be opaque. It need only ask the right questions. For Irby\, it is\, “Which moments are worth stopping time for?” There are many answers\, of course. His work answers with unflinching fortitude\, “Any moment in which the unbreakable power of the Black experience announces itself”—the worthiness of every single Black moment\, no matter how mundane. “If you would mourn the loss of Black life\, you damn well better celebrate a Black smile\, a rowdy porch playing dominos\, and a flawless cross-up at the local basketball court.” Irby is the co-founder & director of Street Dreams magazine and an artist of many disciplines. He has provided work for Sony\, Nike\, Cartier\, The New Yorker\, and more. Chief Curator Alicia Longwell will talk with peter campus\, Virginia Jaramillo\, and John Torreano about their decades-long careers and how their practices intersect.\nABOUT PETER CAMPUS \npeter campus (American\, b. New York\, New York 1937) is a seminal artist in the canons of new media and video art. In a solitary pursuit over the past year\, campus positioned his camera around the shores of Shinnecock Bay\, not far from his home in Patchogue\, NY. The resulting six works\, all to be shown in the exhibition\, invite the viewer to meditate on the sublime beauty of the natural landscape\, while noting the gap between what we perceive\, what the camera records\, and what the artist brings to the fore in the video. \nABOUT VIRGINIA JARAMILLO \nA pioneering minimalist whose career has spanned six decades\, Virginia Jaramillo (American\, b. El Paso\, Texas\, 1939) creates work from sources that span history and cross cultures. The exhibition brings together never before seen paintings and drawings completed in her Hampton Bays studio over the past two years. Harmony between Line and Space features two 12-foot canvases\, Quantum Entanglement and Quanta\, in which expansive fields of color are crisscrossed by impossibly uniform razor-thin lines. “The color field was not negative space\,” notes Jaramillo\, “but a space filled with life and possibilities.” \nABOUT JOHN TORREANO \nWith the universe as his muse\, New York and Sag Harbor-based artist John Torreano (American\, b. Flint\, Michigan\, 1941) combines realism infused with abstraction to create works that conflate time and space. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nJoin us for a private tour of Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio\, a communal art space based on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation. The event will feature a conversation with Jeremy Dennis\, lead artist\, who will share the history of Ma’s House and its residency program for Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. In addition to Dennis’ work\, you will see “Point of Reference”\, the solo exhibition of new works by December resident artist\, Jacoub Reyes. \nJeremy Dennis. Photo by Lori Hawkins. \nJeremy Dennis is a contemporary fine art photographer and a tribal member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation. In his work\, he explores indigenous identity\, culture\, and assimilation\, and in 2018\, he participated in the Parrish Road Show with an exhibition at the Arts Center at Duck Creek\, East Hampton. He was one of 10 recipients of a 2016 Dreamstarter Grant from the national non-profit organization Running Strong for American Indian Youth. He was awarded $10\,000 to pursue his project\, On This Site\, which uses photography and an interactive online map to showcase culturally significant Native American sites on Long Island\, a topic of special meaning for Dennis\, who was raised on the Shinnecock Nation Reservation. \nJacoub Reyes is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Florida. He finds and makes materials and tools as part of an experimental aspect of his process. Reyes salvages and transforms found wood to reflect how marginalized and oppressed communities have been cast aside throughout history. With these\, he carves detailed large-scale allegorical woodcuts based on the acculturation of the Caribbean and the world at large. The exhibitions\, organized by Longwell\,  feature predominantly new\, never-before-seen work by artists in the seventh decade of their careers and at the top of their creative powers. \n  \nVirginia Jaramillo: The Harmony between Line and Space presents five newly created paintings by the pioneering minimalist who has practiced for more than six decades. Two paintings represent the artist’s visualization of communication between quantum particles across the vastness of space. John Torreano: Painting Outer Space/Inner Space\, 1989 to Present\, features 10 large-scale paintings on plywood panels\, studded with gems and wood balls. DESCRIPTION:One of the progenitors of Pop Art\, Roy Lichtenstein’s work of the 1950s reveals much about the preoccupations of a younger generation of artists in the post-war U.S. as they attempted to work their way through and out of the shadows of Abstract Expressionism. Lichtenstein’s wide-ranging explorations of subject matter and form would lead to his groundbreaking Pop paintings\, first shown in New York in 1962\, ushering in a new attitude towards art from which there was no turning back. \nOn this closing weekend of Roy Lichtenstein: History in the Making\, 1948-1960\, join Dorothy Lichtenstein\, former director of the pioneering Paul Bianchini Gallery\, New York\, who worked closely with many of the Pop artists\, and Donna De Salvo\, Senior Adjunct Curator\, Dia Art Foundation\, and Curator of Hand-Painted Pop: American Art in Transition\, 1955-1962\, for a lively conversation about this legendary artist and pivotal period in art in the United States. \nABOUT DONNA DE SALVO \nDonna De Salvo is a curator\, writer\, and consultant who has worked with numerous national and international artists and museum collections.  She is currently Senior Adjunct Curator\, Special Projects\, Dia Art Foundation. She held several positions at the Whitney Museum of American Art\, becoming its first Chief Curator and Deputy Director for Programs where she oversaw the museum’s curatorial department and program of exhibitions and acquisitions and was centrally involved in the development and design of the Whitney’s new building and exhibition galleries. \nABOUT DOROTHY LICHTENSTEIN \nDorothy Lichtenstein is President of the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation\, which is dedicated to the encouragement of a broad understanding of the art of Roy Lichtenstein and the artists of his time. After studying art history at Arcadia University (formerly Beaver College)\, she became director of the pioneering Bianchini Art Gallery in New York\, organizing exhibitions and projects dealing with emerging Pop art. DESCRIPTION:  \nJustin Beal will discuss his new book\, Sandfuture\, an account of the life and work of the architect Minoru Yamasaki with Yamasaki’s granddaughter\, the muralist and children’s book author\, Katie Yamasaki. \nSandfuture is also a book about an artist interrogating art and architecture’s role in culture as New York changes drastically after a decade bracketed by terrorism and natural disaster. From the central thread of Yamasaki’s life\, Sandfuture spirals outward to include reflections on a wide range of subjects\, from the figure of the architect in literature and film and transformations in the contemporary art market to the perils of sick buildings and the broader social and political implications of how\, and for whom\, cities are built. \nABOUT JUSTIN BEAL \nJustin Beal is an artist with an extensive exhibition history in the United States and Europe. Beal graduated from Yale University with a degree in architecture and design and continued his studies at the Whitney Independent Study Program and the University of Southern California. His work has been reviewed in the New York Times\, the New Yorker\, Artforum\, Frieze\, Art in America\, Interview\, and the Los Angeles Times and is included in the permanent collections of the Albright Knox Museum\, the Hammer Museum\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles. Beal currently teaches at Hunter College. \nABOUT KATIE YAMASAKI \nKatie Yamasaki is a muralist and children’s book artist. She has painted over 80 murals with diverse communities around the world that explore local issues of social justice. Her children’s books focus on stories from underrepresented communities. Yamasaki co-authored Everything Naomi Loved\, with Ian Lendler for Norton Young Readers\, about facing the hard changes of gentrification. When the Cousins Came and Fish for Jimmy recount personal family stories about the internment camps of WWII and growing up in a multi-racial family. Yamasaki earned her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in NYC\, where she served on the faculty for several years. She worked for 14 years as a public school Spanish and Art teacher in both the Detroit and NYC public schools. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is required. DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin artist Darlene Charneco in conversation with Corinne Erni\, Senior Curator of ArtsReach and Special Project\, as they discuss Charneco’s 2021 Parrish Road Show exhibition Symbiosome Schoolhouse. The site-specific exhibition is on view through October 24 at Oysterponds Historical Society in Orient\, in both the Old Point Schoolhouse and on the Historical Society grounds. Charneco presents new works on paper\, sculpture\, and video\, as well as the artist’s signature wall reliefs which she calls Touchmaps\, created largely while in residency at the William Steeple Davis Trust in Orient. \nABOUT DARLENE CHARNECO \nDarlene Charneco (b. 1971\, New York City) attended Stony Brook University for MFA Studies and Long Island University Southampton for her BFA. Exhibiting throughout the U.S. and globally\, she participated in PINTA Fair London and the Korean International Art Fair. Charneco’s work is part of Guild Hall Museum’s permanent collection\, and was featured in the Princeton Architectural Press book The Map as Art: Contemporary Artists Explore Cartography by Katherine Harmon\, and How Architecture Learned to Speculate by Mihall & Serbest through the University of Stuttgart. Charneco was awarded the 2017 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. \nABOUT PARRISH ROAD SHOW \nNow in its tenth year\, Parrish Road Show is the Museum’s off-site project designed to encourage engagement and interaction between artists and the communities outside the Museum’s walls.
