Molina is most well-known for his “Children of the World” series which consists of large and small-scale sculp­tures as well as abstract paintings. The works in this series are inspired by and emanate from the artist’s vivid memories of his treacherous journey through the desert as a 16-year-old youth escaping the vio­lence of then war-torn El Salvador in the hopes of finding safe haven in the United States. \nDede Gotthelf purchased the Southampton Inn and other development properties in the town after a highly successful career in banking\, brokerage\, and government. Dede is active on several local boards and advisory committees; was recognized as one of the Top 100 Real Estate Women of the 21st Century by AREW; awarded New York State Women of Distinction (New York State); Certificate of Special Achievement for urban planning by the New Your State governor. Dede is an honors graduate from Williams College\, the Bearley School\, and holds a sailing captain’s license. With a dedicated and experienced day-to-day management team at the Inn\, Dede is focused on her passion to make the East End a sustainable year-round community through staff housing and tourism while maintaining the culture and beauty of our community. \nJolie Parcher is the Founder and Director of Mandala Yoga Center for Healing Arts and has been a certified yoga teacher from The Patanjali Yoga Center in Kathmandu\, Nepal since 1990. Jolie is certified as an Ayurvedic Diet and Lifestyle Practitioner from the Kripalu School of Ayurveda and is trained as a practitioner of the Ayurvedic hands on Treatments as well as an Aromatherapist. \nJohn J. Leonard\, of The Law Office of John J. Leonard\, is an attorney engaged in private practice in Hampton Bays with a focus on civil litigation\, matrimonial and family law\, real estate\, and estate planning. Active in his community\, John is a member of the Town of Southampton East End Regional Intervention Court\, a diversion criminal drug court\, and the Town of Southampton Zoning Board of Appeals\, as well the Hampton Bays chapters of the Rotary Club and the LeTip networking group. The program will take place in the galleries among the works Sultan selected for the exhibition. \nSultan is one of forty-one artists with deep local roots who were invited to select works from the collection to be shown along with their own. Choosing works by Charles Burchfield\, R.M. Fischer\, Valerie Jaudon\, Roy Lichtenstein\, Donald Lipski\, Dan Rizzie\, and Keith Sonnier\, he says: “All of the art I chose is abstract in nature even if it contains a kind of image—the images are loaded. They are art historical torn from the natural world but not bound by it. The artists are all mature and yet have a certainty of their craft. There is no guesswork in the making\, only in the message.” \nArtists Choose Parrish is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education\, with additional support from Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator\, and Brianna L. Hernández\, Assistant Curator. \nAbout \nDONALD SULTAN (b. 1951\, Asheville\, NC) earned his BFA from the University of North Carolina\, Chapel Hill\, and MFA from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago before establishing himself in New York in 1975. Since his solo debut in 1977\, Sultan has excelled as a distinguished painter\, printmaker\, and sculptor. Renowned for seamlessly merging traditional and modern elements\, Sultan’s large-scale paintings\, often classified as still lifes\, present bold compositions employing industrial materials like tar and concrete\, contributing to the unique texture and character of his pieces. Sultan’s art\, described by him as a blend of basic geometric and organic forms with a formal purity\, has left an indelible mark on contemporary art. Sultan’s subjects evolve organically\, maintaining powerful statements amid abstraction. His work\, showcased globally in solo and group exhibitions\, is a part of prestigious permanent collections\, including The Museum of Modern Art\, the Dallas Museum of Art\, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. She broadcasts LIVE from the WLIW-FM studio in Southampton 9-11 every weekday morning featuring music from all decades and genres\, as well as interviews with folks from all walks of life\, which were lauded by the New York Press Association twice-over in 2023. Encore episodes of The Heart air every midnight on 88.3 FM throughout the East End and Coastal Connecticut\, 96.9 FM in Western Suffolk and are streamed/archived online at WLIW.org/radio. \nKeith E. Davis opened the first Golden Pear on Mainstreet\, Southampton in 1987\, followed by East Hampton in 1991\, and Bridgehampton in 1996. Keith learned the restaurant business through many years of experience that began at the age of 14 washing dishes and preparing food at a local seafood restaurant. During his college years\, Keith worked four summer seasons at the famous Dune Deck Hotel located on the Atlantic Ocean in Westhampton Beach. There he refined his front-of-house skills and worked very closely with the chef. Keith learned off-premise-catering while working as a sous-chef at Barefoot Contessa\, a beautiful gourmet food store-market-caterer\, before an opportunity opened up for\nKeith to take over the fabulous location on the corner we all now know as the Golden Pear Café Southampton. \nCarmindy Bowyer is a New York-based editorial makeup artist\, beauty/lifestyle expert\, TV personality\, author\, speaker\, and entrepreneur with over 30 years of experience in beauty. For over a decade\, millions of viewers counted on Carmindy to teach them her insider makeup tips and tricks on TLC’s hit show “What Not To Wear” but what really inspired her viewers was her confidence-boosting attitude towards everyone. Carmindy taught them how to see their unique beauty and stop any negative commentary going on in their heads. She showed that people of all ages\, skin tones\, and features had the right to love and celebrate themselves. Carmindy is currently working out of Water Mill\, NY on her national projects. \nRandy King has been involved in every facet of the fitness industry on the east end of Long Island and New York City for at least 30 years. He managed the Gym Source Southampton location\, a former leader in residential and commercial fitness distribution\, and was responsible for driving sales and maintaining positive customer interactions. Randy branched out on his own in 2021 forming Shinnecock Functional Fitness\, LLC a rubber gym floor installation company. He actively coordinates and designs flooring options with some of the biggest builders and architects in the Hamptons. Shinnecock Functional Fitness is also aligned in partnership with Gym Tech Fitness which both provide a truly boutique home gym design experience like no other. Randy has been married to his wife Nora for 23 years and currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Shinnecock Indian Nation Council of Trustees.

DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$5 Members | $16 Adults | $12 Seniors | Free for Students & Children \nJoin us for a conversation with artists Ned Smyth and John Torreano\, whose work is on view in Artists Choose Parrish\, Part II\, moderated by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education. The landmark exhibition honors the East End’s rich artistic legacy and brings greater attention to major artists practicing here today. Forty-one renowned artists with deep local roots were invited to select works from the collection to be shown along with their own\, offering new perspectives and interpretations of the Parrish’s permanent collection. \nFor his Artists Choose Parrish presentation\, Ned Smyth chose Louise Nevelson’s Untitled (ca. late 1970s) painted wood sculpture to be in direct dialogue with his two cast concrete works from 1973\, Post Annunciation and Renaissance Plan. When deciding on which pieces he would like to include\, Smyth explained “I have always wanted to show my early minimalist architectural work at the Parrish. When I was asked to be part of Artists Choose Parrish\, I immediately suggested showing my cast concrete two-by-four architectural pieces.” Smyth was drawn to Nevelson’s work due to their shared monochromatic palette and their mutual success of commissioned work during their careers. \nWhen going through the Museum’s collection\, John Torreano instantly thought of Dennis Oppenheim’s Splash Building (2009) to show alongside his works\, 4 x 4 (1989) and Paint in Some Holes (1995). When discussing his process for selecting Oppenheim’s late work\, he noted\, “Splash Building (2009) was one of the first works I thought of when asked to choose from the Parrish’s permanent collection. Recently reviewed by The New York Times\, THE SLIP delves into six visual artist biographies\, tenderly researched with an interpretive mood that echoes the debate on a philosophical approach to art making\, with “a neighborhood-eye view of art history” (Walker Mimms\, New York Times\, 2023). Peiffer’s publication includes profiles of several Parrish permanent collection artists – Agnes Martin\, James Rosenquist\, and Jack Youngerman\, alongside Robert Indiana\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Delphine Seyrig\, and Lenore Tawney. Peiffer will read excerpts from the book and discuss several of the artists\, their works\, and historical photo references. \nAbout THE SLIP\nFor just over a decade\, from 1956 to 1967\, a collection of dilapidated former sail-making warehouses clustered at the lower tip of Manhattan became the quiet epicenter of the art world. Coenties Slip\, a dead-end street near the water\, was home to a circle of wildly talented and varied artists that included Robert Indiana\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Agnes Martin\, James Rosenquist\, Delphine Seyrig\, Lenore Tawney\, and Jack Youngerman. As friends and inspirations to one another\, they created a unique community for unbridled creative expression and experimentation\, and the works they made at the Slip would go on to change the course of American art. \nNow\, for the first time\, Prudence Peiffer pays homage to these artists and the unsung impact their work had on the direction of late twentieth-century art and film. The exhibition features more than 100 of the most important paintings\, prints\, and works on paper by Brooks\, dating from the 1920s to 1983. \nHip Hop Panel Discussion\nThree panelists will discuss the half-century history of hip-hop\, and its profound\, enduring impact on music and culture. Panelists include Bakari Kitwana—author\, journalist\, and political analyst who directs the Rap Sessions: Community Dialogues on Hip-Hop; 1/2 Pint—an educator\, hip-hop artist\, educational consultant\, podcast co-host\, and webcast producer; and The Legendary DJ Belal—an A&M recording artist\, touring DJ\, and member of Groove B Chill\, Uptown. \nFilm: House Party\n(1990\, 1hr 40 min.\, Rated R)\nHouse Party was written and directed by Reginald Hudlin\, based on his award-winning Harvard University student film. In 2022\, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant.”  The film’s hip-hop and R&B soundtrack\, released on March 1990 by Motown Records\, peaked at 104 on the Billboard 200 and 20 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. \nThe Story: When Play’s (Christopher Martin) parents are out of town\, he plans a house party of the century. In 1952\, Rebecca Bolling Littlejohn assumed the presidency of the Parrish’s Board of Trustees and began a crusade that would rename\, rebrand\, and revive the waning institution and bring it into the 20th Century\, including the acquisition of the first William Merritt Chase paintings and also works by contemporary East End artists Fairfield Porter\, Larry Rivers\, and John D. Graham. Join Chief Curator Emeritus\, Alicia G. Longwell\, for a reflection on this remarkable innovator while recalling her own four-decade career at the Museum—so often inspired by Mrs. Littlejohn’s stirring legacy. \nLongwell served as the Parrish Art Museum’s Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education for over three decades until her retirement in October 2022. She received her Ph.D. from the Graduate Center\, City University of New York\, where her dissertation topic was John Graham. Throughout her tenure\, she was integral in building the Museum’s collection through identifying and pursuing acquisitions\, including major works by Ross Bleckner\, Mary Heilmann\, Lonnie Holley\, Elizabeth Peyton\, David Salle\, Alan Shields\, and Joe Zucker. \nAmong her most notable curatorial achievements are Sand: Memory\, Meaning and Metaphor (2008)\, John Graham: Maverick Modernist (2017)\, and Affinities for Abstraction: Women Artists on Eastern Long Island\, 1950-2020 (2021). Longwell ushered the Museum into its new building in Water Mill\, planning the inaugural installations of the Parrish collection for the 2012 opening that featured the exhibition Malcolm Morley: Painting\, Paper\, Process (2012). He received a 2016 Dreamstarter Grant from Running Strong for American Indian Youth to pursue On This Site\, which uses photography to showcase significant Native American sites on Long Island. A Parrish collection artist\, Dennis was the 2018 Parrish Road Show artist\, and part of Art on the Grid by Public Art Fund in 2020. He lives on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton\, where he founded Ma’s House\, a BIPOC artist residency. \n  \nKoyoltzintli Miranda-Rivadeneria is an interdisciplinary artist\, plant worker\, and educator living in New York. She grew up in the coast of Ecuador and the Andes\, geographies that permeate her work. She focuses on geopoetics\, ancestral technologies\, ritual\, and storytelling through collaborative processes and personal narratives. Intersectional theories and earth-based healing inform her practice.\, Work by Miranda-Rivadeneria\, who was nominated for Prix Pictet in 2019\, has been exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington\, DC\, the United Nations\, Aperture Foundation\, and the Photographic Museum of Humanity. She received the Photographic Fellowship at the Musee du Quai Branly in Paris and a NYFA Fellowship. \n  \nKelly Dennis is a licensed attorney specializing in Federal American Indian Law\, and Secretary of the Council of Trustees for the Shinnecock Indian Nation. She is a newly appointed member of the Department of Interior Advisory Committee for Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland representing Eastern Regional Tribal Nations. Dennis is also an artist primarily working in painting to depict culturally significant symbolism and narratives. \n  \nNour Batyne is a creative producer\, facilitator\, and artist whose work lies at the intersection of immersive storytelling\, futures thinking\, and social innovation. She is a Next Generation Foresight Practitioner Fellow at the School of International Futures\, and serves as an Associate Instructor for the Nonprofit Management M.S. program at Columbia University. With a global portfolio of work\, Batyne is currently based in New York City and is an organizer for the Wide Awakes\, an open-source network that radically reimagines the future through creative collaboration. \n  \nAbout The Watermill Center\nFounded in 1992 by avant-garde visionary Robert Wilson\, The Watermill Center is an interdisciplinary laboratory for the arts and humanities situated on ten acres of Shinnecock ancestral territory on Long Island’s East End. Moderated by Museum Executive Director Mónica Ramírez-Montagut\, who holds a Ph.D. in architecture\, the discussion will explore the relationship between the Museum’s design from the architects’ perspective\, as well as from the viewpoint of an artist curating and exhibiting work in the space. \nThe innovative design by Herzog & de MeuronSenior Partner Mergenthaler and Studio Director Schmerbeck integrates architecture and landscape in a plan that both respects and reflects the singular natural beauty and rich artistic legacy of Long Island’s East End. Sited on 14 acres\, the purpose-built structure suggests the vernacular architecture of sheds and potato barns that for generations doubled as artist workspaces. Inspired by the light\, water\, and sky that create the unique atmosphere of the region\, the building features sky-lit galleries that mimic the light and proportions of typical artist’s studio. \n \nIn the exhibition Another Justice: US is Them\, on view through November 6\, Thomas along with other featured artists adopt dynamic and responsive approaches to activate the full volume of the architectural space. Thomas’s wall-sized works made from deconstructed flags envelop the gallery space in fabric. In the Spine\, Christine Sun Kim creates an immersive pathway between the galleries with bold\, vibrant notations from the American Sign Language. Outdoors on the building exterior and grounds\, Thomas activates the museum’s southern-facing façade with a 55–foot neon sign clearly visible from the highway. Muna Malik’s 20–foot longmirrored acrylic boat sited in the Museum’s Meadowentices visitors to venture into and explore the landscape. \nAbout Ascan Mergenthaler\nHerzog & de Meuron Senior Partner Ascan Mergenthaler is in charge of projects in Europe\, Asia\, and the Americas and has led the realization of the de Young Museum in San Francisco; the Parrish Art Museum on Long Island\, New York; the Tate Modern Project in London; the Blavatnik School of Government in Oxford; the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg; 56 Leonard Street in New York City; and Tai Kwun\, Centre for Heritage & Arts; as well as M+\, a cultural center for 20th and 21st century art\, design\, architecture\, and the moving image in Hong Kong. After receiving a Master of Architecture Degree\, with Honors\, from CAL-POLY in 1983\, Stott moved back to the East Coast where he established his firm in 1988. He has been involved in hundreds of commercial and residential projects in California\, Vermont\, Connecticut\, Long Island and New York City. Locally\, Stott has designed several prominent projects including the Suffolk Theater Conversion\, the Southampton and Sag Harbor Police Stations\, new units at the Hampton Maid Motel\, and many small projects at Southampton hospital including the award-winning Centennial Hall. DESCRIPTION:TICKETS  LIVESTREAM\n\nJoin high school students and art educators featured in the 2022 Student Exhibition from schools across the East End as they present their work and passion during a special PechaKucha Night. \nAs the official site for the Hamptons\, the Parrish joins over 700 cities globally in hosting PechaKucha Nights\, named for the sound of “chit-chat” in Japanese. The format is simple: each invited presenter gets 20 images x 20 seconds per image to talk about living creatively. This is a great opportunity to establish new relationships\, learn about local resources\, and hear from the many creatives who call Long Island home. \nParticipants: Shelter Island School teacher Catherine Brigham and student Margaret Schultheis; Southampton High School teacher Pamela Collins and student Talus Pinto; Bridgehampton School teacher Robin Gianis and students Luna Paucar and Pearl Ann V. Cherry Brown; and East Hampton High School teacher Margaret Zubarriain with student Kym Bermeo. \n  \nABOUT THE PRESENTERS \nSHELTER ISLAND UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT \nCatherine Brigham teaches art to 15 grade levels\, ranging from 3–19 years old. Brigham earned an undergraduate degree in Art and Design in Education from Pratt Institute\, and a Master’s in Teaching Students with Disabilities from Long Island University. She lives on Shelter Island full time. \nMargaret Schultheis\, in the 11th grade\, is currently participating in the drama club and art club. Her plans for the future include tattooing and illustration. \nSOUTHHAMPTON HIGH SCHOOL \nPamela Collins has an MFA in Painting/ Drawing from Brooklyn College and both a BFA in Painting/Drawing and a BS in Art Education from SUNY New Paltz. At Southampton\, she teaches Studio in Art\, Mural Painting and Set Design\, Drawing and Painting\, College Level Drawing\, Advanced Painting\, and Portfolio Development. Collins also teaches classes at the Parrish Art Museum. \nTalus Pinto\, who works in photography\, is a senior at SHS and plans to attend the School of Visual Arts in New York City upon graduation. Pinto has been part of the SHS’s art club for 4 years and is grateful for his participation in the club. His hope for those seeing his work is\, “I hope you embrace my vision of the world through the fine arts of photography.” \nBRIDGEHAMPTON SCHOOL \nOriginally from Cambridge\, MA\, art teacher Robin Gianis found her way to the East End after graduating from Sarah Lawrence College. After an early career in retail management\, she transitioned into art education. She has taught K-12 at the Bridgehampton School and has served on the Parrish Art Museum Education Committee. A ceramic artist\, Gianis will be featured in the event Encounters with Artists: Insights into the Artistic Process at the Parrish Art Museum. \nLuna Paucar is a junior at the Bridgehampton High School whose interests include design and ceramics. This year\, she contributed to the design portions of Student Council\, National Honor Society\, Culture Club\, and the Robotics team. Paucar’s favorite subjects are Marimba and art\, and she shares these talents with friends and family from Honduras and Ecuador. By combining her culture\, Marimba\, and art\, Paucar’s goal is to attend the Rhode Island School of Design. \nOne of Pearl Ann V. Cherry Brown’s favorite classes is studio art\, and she especially loves to make props out of cardboard. She spends much of her time drawing\, and her hobbies include crafting and listening to music. \nEAST HAMPTON HIGH SCHOOL \nMargaret Zubarriain graduated from Parsons/New School of Design with a BFA in Illustration. She worked as an intern prop builder for The Jim Henson Company\, a set painter for Women’s Expressive Theater in New York\, and created murals in the Bronx\, Manhattan\, and most recently a large commission at Gurney’s in Montauk. A mother of two\, Zubarriain is in her sixth year teaching Drawing\, Painting\, and Sculpture at East Hampton High School. \nSenior Kym Bermeo\, a Latinx queer artist who lives in Springs and participates in the art club at East Hampton High School\, is member of the Teen Arts Council at Guild Hall\, and works at The Golden Eagle Art supply store. Bermeo’s goal through her work is to shine light on the hardships of her community and their identity.
