Meisel will join in conversation with Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art & Education\, as they discuss their relationships with Flack throughout her career and during the film production. \nAbout Audrey Flack\nAudrey Flack (1931–2024) was an internationally recognized painter and sculptor and a pioneer of photorealism. Flack taught and lectured extensively both nationally and internationally\, was awarded the Augustus St. Gaudens Medal from Cooper Union\, and was an honorary Albert Dorne Professor at Bridgeport University. Among many major museums around the world\, her work also resides in The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, Whitney Museum of American Art\, National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Butler Institute of American Art\, National Gallery of Australia\, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art\, and the Allen Memorial Art Museum\, as well as at the Parrish Art Museum. Additionally\, she is the first woman artist\, along with Mary Cassatt\, to be included in Janson’s History of Art text. \nAbout the Film\nAt 88 years-old\, Audrey Flack holds a unique place in the history of contemporary art in America. Feminist\, rebel\, mother\, painter\, sculptor\, and teacher\, Audrey’s often controversial 40-year career evolved from abstract expressionism in the 1950s to photorealism in the 1970s. One of the first women ever included in the famed Janson’s History of Art\, Audrey continues to create\, explore\, and inspire with her unique style and indomitable spirit. Queen of Hearts follows Flack as she takes her work in a brand-new direction and reveals her long-term struggles as the mother of a child with autism. Flack has something deep and genuine to communicate to the world. She is a provocateur and a rebel\, an example and an inspiration. The film follows three mothers as they grapple with mental health concerns\, lack of paid leave\, and other challenges in the days\, weeks\, and months following birth\, vividly painting a picture of the gaps in the current landscape of postpartum care. The film highlights the essential role of community-based support\, especially within historically marginalized communities. Julia Chiang and Sam Moyer will be joined in conversation with Christy Turlington Burns as they discuss themes in the film\, their approach to work as mothers\, and how their maternal experiences affect and inspire their art. \nGiving Birth in America: Arkansas is the seventh chapter in Every Mother Counts’ Giving Birth in America film series. This film spotlights Arkansas\, the state with the highest maternal mortality rate across the United States. The short film vividly paints a picture of the reality of the postpartum experience. More than half of all maternal deaths take place during the postpartum period\, yet this stage of pregnancy is often overlooked. \nAbout Julia Chiang\nJulia Chiang (American\, b. 1978) lives and works in Brooklyn\, New York and studied Studio Art and Art History at New York University. Chiang has recently been featured in solo-exhibitions at Nanzuka Underground\, Tokyo\, Nicola Vassell Gallery\, New York\, The Modern Institute\, Glasgow\, and The Journal Gallery\, New York. This year\, she created a mural with RxART for the new SUNY Upstate Nappi Wellness Institute in Syracuse\, NY. In 2022\, Chiang was commissioned by Rockaway Hotel and Spa for the “Rockaway Mural” in Queens\, NY. She has been an artist-in-residence at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village\, Colorado\, The Creative Centre at Mount Sinai Hospital\, Henry Street Settlement in New York\, HAP Clay Studios in Beijing\, and Vermont Studio Center in Johnson\, Vermont. \nAbout Sam Moyer\nSam Moyer (American\, b. 1983) received her BFA from the Corcoran College of Art and Design and her MFA from Yale University. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at the Bass Museum\, Miami; the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis; the Drawing Center\, New York; the FLAG Art Foundation\, New York; the Hill Art Foundation\, New York; LAND\, Los Angeles; MoMA PS1\, Queens; the Parrish Art Museum\, New York; Tensta Konsthall\, Stockholm; Wexner Center for the Arts\, Columbus; and White Flag Projects\, St. Louis. Moyer’s large-scale outdoor sculpture Doors for Doris (2020)\, commissioned by Public Art Fund\, was on view in the Doris C. Freedman Plaza in Central Park\, New York from September 2020 through October 2021. Co-presented with AIA Peconic\, this program provides continuing education credits for licensed architects. Visitors are welcome to enjoy lunch from the Parrish Café during the program held in the Lichtenstein Theater. \nAbout the Authors\nRobert Cody\, AIA\, NCARB\, LEED AP\, is Partner at Amoia Cody Architecture\, Professor of Practice\, and Former Associate Dean and Chair at the New York Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Design. For over 30 years\, he has worked on projects from wood-frame houses to precast concrete office buildings\, interior renovations to freestanding towers\, design competitions to physical construction\, and ecological design\, to The Museum of Modern Art. Cody has practiced and taught architectural design theory\, building construction\, and architecture studios with particular concentration in the comprehensive design studio. He has coordinated and taught travel studios in Italy and Scandinavia. He has also been the New York Tech NCARB AXP Coordinator and AIAS Faculty Advisor since 2012. \nAngela Amoia is Partner at Amoia Cody Architecture and Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture at the New York Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Design. Amoia has practiced and taught history\, theory\, architecture studios\, including the comprehensive design studio\, and study abroad in Italy since graduating from Columbia University with a Master’s degree in Advanced Architectural Design. Her role as project manager ranged in scale from skyscrapers to large-scale academic facilities and residential houses and loft buildings. \nAbout the Book\nIn the contemporary practice of architecture\, digital design and fabrication are emergent technologies in transforming how architects present a design and form a material strategy that is responsible\, equitable\, sustainable\, resilient\, and forward-looking. Alvar Aalto and the Future of Architecture exposes dialogue between history\, theory\, design\, construction\, technology\, and sensory experience by means of digital simulations that enhance the assessment and values of our material choices. The program will take place in the galleries among the works Sultan selected for the exhibition. \nSultan is one of forty-one artists with deep local roots who were invited to select works from the collection to be shown along with their own. Choosing works by Charles Burchfield\, R.M. Fischer\, Valerie Jaudon\, Roy Lichtenstein\, Donald Lipski\, Dan Rizzie\, and Keith Sonnier\, he says: “All of the art I chose is abstract in nature even if it contains a kind of image—the images are loaded. They are art historical torn from the natural world but not bound by it. The artists are all mature and yet have a certainty of their craft. There is no guesswork in the making\, only in the message.” \nArtists Choose Parrish is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education\, with additional support from Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator\, and Brianna L. Hernández\, Assistant Curator. \nAbout \nDONALD SULTAN (b. 1951\, Asheville\, NC) earned his BFA from the University of North Carolina\, Chapel Hill\, and MFA from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago before establishing himself in New York in 1975. Since his solo debut in 1977\, Sultan has excelled as a distinguished painter\, printmaker\, and sculptor. Renowned for seamlessly merging traditional and modern elements\, Sultan’s large-scale paintings\, often classified as still lifes\, present bold compositions employing industrial materials like tar and concrete\, contributing to the unique texture and character of his pieces. Sultan’s art\, described by him as a blend of basic geometric and organic forms with a formal purity\, has left an indelible mark on contemporary art. Sultan’s subjects evolve organically\, maintaining powerful statements amid abstraction. His work\, showcased globally in solo and group exhibitions\, is a part of prestigious permanent collections\, including The Museum of Modern Art\, the Dallas Museum of Art\, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. Keith learned the restaurant business through many years of experience that began at the age of 14 washing dishes and preparing food at a local seafood restaurant. During his college years\, Keith worked four summer seasons at the famous Dune Deck Hotel located on the Atlantic Ocean in Westhampton Beach. There he refined his front-of-house skills and worked very closely with the chef. For over a decade\, millions of viewers counted on Carmindy to teach them her insider makeup tips and tricks on TLC’s hit show “What Not To Wear” but what really inspired her viewers was her confidence-boosting attitude towards everyone. Carmindy taught them how to see their unique beauty and stop any negative commentary going on in their heads. She showed that people of all ages\, skin tones\, and features had the right to love and celebrate themselves. Carmindy is currently working out of Water Mill\, NY on her national projects. \nRandy King has been involved in every facet of the fitness industry on the east end of Long Island and New York City for at least 30 years. He managed the Gym Source Southampton location\, a former leader in residential and commercial fitness distribution\, and was responsible for driving sales and maintaining positive customer interactions. Randy branched out on his own in 2021 forming Shinnecock Functional Fitness\, LLC a rubber gym floor installation company. He actively coordinates and designs flooring options with some of the biggest builders and architects in the Hamptons. Shinnecock Functional Fitness is also aligned in partnership with Gym Tech Fitness which both provide a truly boutique home gym design experience like no other. Randy has been married to his wife Nora for 23 years and currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Shinnecock Indian Nation Council of Trustees.

The landmark exhibition honors the East End’s rich artistic legacy and brings greater attention to major artists practicing here today. Forty-one renowned artists with deep local roots were invited to select works from the collection to be shown along with their own\, offering new perspectives and interpretations of the Parrish’s permanent collection. \nFor his Artists Choose Parrish presentation\, Ned Smyth chose Louise Nevelson’s Untitled (ca. late 1970s) painted wood sculpture to be in direct dialogue with his two cast concrete works from 1973\, Post Annunciation and Renaissance Plan. When deciding on which pieces he would like to include\, Smyth explained “I have always wanted to show my early minimalist architectural work at the Parrish. When I was asked to be part of Artists Choose Parrish\, I immediately suggested showing my cast concrete two-by-four architectural pieces.” Smyth was drawn to Nevelson’s work due to their shared monochromatic palette and their mutual success of commissioned work during their careers. \nWhen going through the Museum’s collection\, John Torreano instantly thought of Dennis Oppenheim’s Splash Building (2009) to show alongside his works\, 4 x 4 (1989) and Paint in Some Holes (1995). When discussing his process for selecting Oppenheim’s late work\, he noted\, “Splash Building (2009) was one of the first works I thought of when asked to choose from the Parrish’s permanent collection. I was attracted to its scale\, the combination of materials and mix of colors and light\, but most important\, its potential multiple interpretations: a building or a splash building\, a Pop artwork\, a three-dimensional drawing\, etc. My experience with it is always a delightful surprise.” Torreano’s subject matter of the universe is on full display with his sculptural paintings that evoke the vastness of the cosmos with their large\, jeweled panels\, a common feeling of Torreano’s evoked by Oppenheim’s oversized interpretation of a splashing water droplet. \n  \nFriday Nights are made possible\, in part\, by The Corcoran Group.

Peiffer will read excerpts from the book and discuss several of the artists\, their works\, and historical photo references. \nAbout THE SLIP\nFor just over a decade\, from 1956 to 1967\, a collection of dilapidated former sail-making warehouses clustered at the lower tip of Manhattan became the quiet epicenter of the art world. Coenties Slip\, a dead-end street near the water\, was home to a circle of wildly talented and varied artists that included Robert Indiana\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Agnes Martin\, James Rosenquist\, Delphine Seyrig\, Lenore Tawney\, and Jack Youngerman. As friends and inspirations to one another\, they created a unique community for unbridled creative expression and experimentation\, and the works they made at the Slip would go on to change the course of American art. \nNow\, for the first time\, Prudence Peiffer pays homage to these artists and the unsung impact their work had on the direction of late twentieth-century art and film. The exhibition features more than 100 of the most important paintings\, prints\, and works on paper by Brooks\, dating from the 1920s to 1983. \nHip Hop Panel Discussion\nThree panelists will discuss the half-century history of hip-hop\, and its profound\, enduring impact on music and culture. Panelists include Bakari Kitwana—author\, journalist\, and political analyst who directs the Rap Sessions: Community Dialogues on Hip-Hop; 1/2 Pint—an educator\, hip-hop artist\, educational consultant\, podcast co-host\, and webcast producer; and The Legendary DJ Belal—an A&M recording artist\, touring DJ\, and member of Groove B Chill\, Uptown. \nFilm: House Party\n(1990\, 1hr 40 min.\, Rated R)\nHouse Party was written and directed by Reginald Hudlin\, based on his award-winning Harvard University student film. In 1952\, Rebecca Bolling Littlejohn assumed the presidency of the Parrish’s Board of Trustees and began a crusade that would rename\, rebrand\, and revive the waning institution and bring it into the 20th Century\, including the acquisition of the first William Merritt Chase paintings and also works by contemporary East End artists Fairfield Porter\, Larry Rivers\, and John D. Graham. Join Chief Curator Emeritus\, Alicia G. Longwell\, for a reflection on this remarkable innovator while recalling her own four-decade career at the Museum—so often inspired by Mrs. Littlejohn’s stirring legacy. \nLongwell served as the Parrish Art Museum’s Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education for over three decades until her retirement in October 2022. She received her Ph.D. from the Graduate Center\, City University of New York\, where her dissertation topic was John Graham. Throughout her tenure\, she was integral in building the Museum’s collection through identifying and pursuing acquisitions\, including major works by Ross Bleckner\, Mary Heilmann\, Lonnie Holley\, Elizabeth Peyton\, David Salle\, Alan Shields\, and Joe Zucker. \nAmong her most notable curatorial achievements are Sand: Memory\, Meaning and Metaphor (2008)\, John Graham: Maverick Modernist (2017)\, and Affinities for Abstraction: Women Artists on Eastern Long Island\, 1950-2020 (2021). Longwell ushered the Museum into its new building in Water Mill\, planning the inaugural installations of the Parrish collection for the 2012 opening that featured the exhibition Malcolm Morley: Painting\, Paper\, Process (2012). By wielding the power of art\, the group aims to deepen and expand its capacity to interrogate what is and imagine what could be. An art collective founded in 2016 by a coalition of artists\, academics\, and organizers—including Hank Willis Thomas\, Eric Gottesman\, Michelle Woo\, and Wyatt Gallery—For Freedoms promotes infinite expansion through art\, and is dedicated to awakening a culture of listening\, healing\, and justice. \n  \nAbout the Speakers\nJeremy Dennis is a contemporary fine art photographer and a tribal member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation. In his work\, he explores indigenous identity\, culture\, and assimilation. He received a 2016 Dreamstarter Grant from Running Strong for American Indian Youth to pursue On This Site\, which uses photography to showcase significant Native American sites on Long Island. A Parrish collection artist\, Dennis was the 2018 Parrish Road Show artist\, and part of Art on the Grid by Public Art Fund in 2020. He lives on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton\, where he founded Ma’s House\, a BIPOC artist residency. \n  \nKoyoltzintli Miranda-Rivadeneria is an interdisciplinary artist\, plant worker\, and educator living in New York. She grew up in the coast of Ecuador and the Andes\, geographies that permeate her work. She focuses on geopoetics\, ancestral technologies\, ritual\, and storytelling through collaborative processes and personal narratives. Intersectional theories and earth-based healing inform her practice.\, Work by Miranda-Rivadeneria\, who was nominated for Prix Pictet in 2019\, has been exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington\, DC\, the United Nations\, Aperture Foundation\, and the Photographic Museum of Humanity. She received the Photographic Fellowship at the Musee du Quai Branly in Paris and a NYFA Fellowship. \n  \nKelly Dennis is a licensed attorney specializing in Federal American Indian Law\, and Secretary of the Council of Trustees for the Shinnecock Indian Nation. She is a newly appointed member of the Department of Interior Advisory Committee for Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland representing Eastern Regional Tribal Nations. Dennis is also an artist primarily working in painting to depict culturally significant symbolism and narratives. \n  \nNour Batyne is a creative producer\, facilitator\, and artist whose work lies at the intersection of immersive storytelling\, futures thinking\, and social innovation. She is a Next Generation Foresight Practitioner Fellow at the School of International Futures\, and serves as an Associate Instructor for the Nonprofit Management M.S. program at Columbia University. With a global portfolio of work\, Batyne is currently based in New York City and is an organizer for the Wide Awakes\, an open-source network that radically reimagines the future through creative collaboration. \n  \nAbout The Watermill Center\nFounded in 1992 by avant-garde visionary Robert Wilson\, The Watermill Center is an interdisciplinary laboratory for the arts and humanities situated on ten acres of Shinnecock ancestral territory on Long Island’s East End. With an emphasis on creativity and collaboration\, The Center offers year-round artist residencies and education programs\, providing a global community with the time\, space\, and freedom to create and inspire. The Watermill Center’s rural campus combines multifunctional studios with ten acres of manicured grounds and gardens\, housing a carefully curated art collection\, expansive research library\, and archives illustrating the life and work of Artistic Director\, Robert Wilson. The Center’s facilities enable Artists-in-Residence to integrate resources from the humanities and research from the sciences into contemporary artistic practice.
