Limited spaces will be available at the door. \n  \nAbout the Exhibition\nThe Parrish Art Museum will present Nina Yankowitz: In the Out/Out the In\, the first retrospective of Nina Yankowitz (American\, b. 1946)\, whose six-decade career has continually expanded the boundaries of painting\, sculpture\, sound\, video\, and installation. Yankowitz came to prominence in the 1960s in New York\, where she experimented with the material and technical possibilities of canvas\, cardboard\, paint sprayers\, and sewing equipment to create abstract paintings. A founding member of the Heresies Collective (1976–1993)\, Yankowitz’s early approach to painting was informed by the feminist movement\, Process art\, and the legacy of Abstract Expressionism. She also participated in the countercultural scenes of Greenwich Village and upstate New York\, and her collaborations with the experimental Group 212 Inter-Media Project encouraged her interest in performance and new media. In the following decades\, her practice branched out into sculpture\, sound and video art\, and interactive installations that harness the technology behind social media platforms and video games. \nNina Yankowitz: In the Out/Out the In is organized by the Museum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\, FL. The presentation at the Parrish is organized by Corinne Erni\, The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator of Art and Education\, with Scout Hutchinson\, The FLAG Art Foundation Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Parrish Art Museum. Limited spaces will be available at the door. \n  \nAbout the Exhibition\nThe Parrish Art Museum will present an exhibition of the work of James Howell (American\, 1935–2014)\, an artist known for his minimalist paintings that explore the vast tonal range of the color gray. Over the course of his fifty-year career\, he produced paintings\, prints\, and drawings that explore the subtlety and scope of the neutral shade\, as well as its relationship to light and perception of space. This will be the first exhibition of Howell’s work on Long Island\, a place that deeply impacted the artist’s later career. Between 2006 and his death\, Howell worked out of his studio in Montauk\, where the everchanging nature of the elements—fog\, water\, and light—provided fresh inspiration for his decades-long fascination with the seemingly infinite array of grays. \nEndless Limits: The Work of James Howell\, 1962–2014 will be accompanied by a fully illustrated exhibition catalogue published by Hatje Cantz. The film was directed by Neshat and Shoja Azari\, and stars Sheila Vand\, Matt Dillon\, William Moseley\, Isabella Rossellini\, and Anna Gunn\, among others. Following the film\, Neshat will be in conversation with Shoja Azari (co-writer and co-director)\, Ghasem Ebrahimian (cinematographer)\, and Corinne Erni\, The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator of Art and Education and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs. \nAdvance registration is recommended. Galleries will be open until 7 PM on Sunday\, August 10. \nAbout the Film\nSimin is an Iranian woman on a journey to discover what it means to be a free American. She works for the Census Bureau which\, in an effort to control its citizens\, has begun a program to record their dreams. Unaware of this devious plot\, Simin is torn between her compassion for those whose dreams she is recording and a truth she must find within. \nHaunted by the fact that her father was executed by the Islamic regime in Iran\, Simin has developed a coping mechanism through a world of fantasy and playacting. She captures her interviewees’ dreams\, secretly impersonates them in Farsi and publishes them on social media where she finds a growing Iranian audience. \nSoon Simin meets Mark; a drifter\, a free soul\, and a poet who declares his love for her at first sight; and Alan\, a cynical cowboy turned detective\, full of machismo and the American spirit of adventure. As Simin enters the triad\, she finds the two men’s competition and conflicts amusing and silently enjoys the ride. \nPlayful and poignant\, Land of Dreams acknowledges in a surreal and satirical way\, the greatness of the American experiment while offering a warning beacon for what could come. \nAbout the Exhibition\nShirin Neshat: Born of Fire marks the artist’s first museum exhibition in the New York area in over 20 years. The show offers a non-linear survey of Neshat’s artistic development\, presenting focused installations of four significant bodies of work. These range from her first major photographic works\, Women of Allah (1993–7)—images inspired by women’s involvement in the Islamic Revolution and Iran-Iraq War—to The Book of Kings (2012)\, a portrait series that calls on the tradition of Persian epic poetry to address the Arab Spring protest movement. The exhibition will also include more recent projects that present Neshat’s surreal film and video works alongside still photographs\, including Land of Dreams (2019)\, in which the artist turns her attention to exploring American culture from the perspective of an Iranian artist in exile\, and The Fury (2022–3)\, addressing sexual exploitation of female political prisoners. \n\nThough distinct\, all four bodies of work are connected by motifs of rebellion\, storytelling\, and human connection; presented together\, they reveal how these key themes have developed throughout Neshat’s artistic evolution. The exhibition also features a gallery dedicated to her private collection of work by fellow artists\, from friends such as Marina Abramović and Robert Longo to artists based in the Middle East. During his lecture—titled “Windows and Openings”—the artist will emphasize his continued interest in geometric abstraction in the form of paintings\, prints\, and drawings. Works to be referenced during the talk will include Heart of Darkness (1982)\, White Window (1988)\, Facing East (1991)\, and Two Windows (2016). The motif of windows in Scully’s work has emerged consistently throughout his career—first appearing in 1973 with Windows\, and more recently with Dark Windows from 2022. \nAdvance registration is recommended. The show offers a non-linear survey of Neshat’s artistic development\, presenting focused installations of four significant bodies of work. These range from her first major photographic works\, Women of Allah (1993–7)—images inspired by women’s involvement in the Islamic Revolution and Iran-Iraq War—to The Book of Kings (2012)\, a portrait series that calls on the tradition of Persian epic poetry to address the Arab Spring protest movement. The exhibition will also include more recent projects that present Neshat’s surreal film and video works alongside still photographs\, including Land of Dreams (2019)\, in which the artist turns her attention to exploring American culture from the perspective of an Iranian artist in exile\, and The Fury (2022–3)\, addressing sexual exploitation of female political prisoners. \nThough distinct\, all four bodies of work are connected by motifs of rebellion\, storytelling\, and human connection; presented together\, they reveal how these key themes have developed throughout Neshat’s artistic evolution. The exhibition also features a gallery dedicated to her private collection of work by fellow artists\, from friends such as Marina Abramović and Robert Longo to artists based in the Middle East. FRESH PAINT is a collaboration with the FLAG Art Foundation and is accompanied by educational initiatives\, including ARTscope\, a teen council program offering participants a comprehensive exploration of the visual arts\, career pathways\, and practical experience in museum operations. \nAbout Derrick Adams\nDerrick Adams is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Brooklyn\, New York. Adams’ work celebrates and expands the dialogue around contemporary Black life and culture through scenes of normalcy and perseverance. \nDerrick Adams received his BFA from Pratt Institute\, New York\, in 1996 and graduated with an MFA from Columbia University\, New York\, in 2003. In addition to his critically acclaimed art practice\, Adams has held numerous teaching positions and is currently a tenured assistant professor in the School of Visual\, Media and Performing Arts at CUNY Brooklyn College. He also holds an honorary doctorate from Maryland Institute College of Art. \nIn 2022\, Adams established Charm City Cultural Cultivation\, a non-profit organization to support and encourage underserved communities in the city of Baltimore through events conducted by three entities: The Last Resort Artist Retreat\, a residency program that subscribes to the concept of leisure as therapy for the Black creative; The Black Baltimore Digital Database\, a collaborative counter-institutional space for collecting\, storing\, and safekeeping the data of local archival initiatives; and Zora’s Den\, an online community of Black women writers started in January 2017\, which has since expanded to in-person writing workshops\, a writers’ circle\, and a monthly reading series that strive to promote instruction\, support\, and social engagement. \nAbout Folasade Ologundudu\nFolasade Ologundudu is an independent producer\, writer\, curator\, and multidisciplinary artist based in New York. Her practice seeks to uncover ideas related to the universal human condition through text-based work\, photography\, and film. She has written art criticism\, profiles\, interviews\, and essays for ArtForum\, ARTnews\, Cultured Magazine\, Sculpture Magazine\, and Frieze\, among other publications. Ologundudu is also the founder of Light Work\, a creative media platform rooted at the intersection of art\, education\, and culture. The film follows three mothers as they grapple with mental health concerns\, lack of paid leave\, and other challenges in the days\, weeks\, and months following birth\, vividly painting a picture of the gaps in the current landscape of postpartum care. The film highlights the essential role of community-based support\, especially within historically marginalized communities. Julia Chiang and Sam Moyer will be joined in conversation with Christy Turlington Burns as they discuss themes in the film\, their approach to work as mothers\, and how their maternal experiences affect and inspire their art. \nGiving Birth in America: Arkansas is the seventh chapter in Every Mother Counts’ Giving Birth in America film series. This film spotlights Arkansas\, the state with the highest maternal mortality rate across the United States. The short film vividly paints a picture of the reality of the postpartum experience. More than half of all maternal deaths take place during the postpartum period\, yet this stage of pregnancy is often overlooked. \nAbout Julia Chiang\nJulia Chiang (American\, b. 1978) lives and works in Brooklyn\, New York and studied Studio Art and Art History at New York University. Chiang has recently been featured in solo-exhibitions at Nanzuka Underground\, Tokyo\, Nicola Vassell Gallery\, New York\, The Modern Institute\, Glasgow\, and The Journal Gallery\, New York. This year\, she created a mural with RxART for the new SUNY Upstate Nappi Wellness Institute in Syracuse\, NY. In 2022\, Chiang was commissioned by Rockaway Hotel and Spa for the “Rockaway Mural” in Queens\, NY. She has been an artist-in-residence at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village\, Colorado\, The Creative Centre at Mount Sinai Hospital\, Henry Street Settlement in New York\, HAP Clay Studios in Beijing\, and Vermont Studio Center in Johnson\, Vermont. \nAbout Sam Moyer\nSam Moyer (American\, b. 1983) received her BFA from the Corcoran College of Art and Design and her MFA from Yale University. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at the Bass Museum\, Miami; the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis; the Drawing Center\, New York; the FLAG Art Foundation\, New York; the Hill Art Foundation\, New York; LAND\, Los Angeles; MoMA PS1\, Queens; the Parrish Art Museum\, New York; Tensta Konsthall\, Stockholm; Wexner Center for the Arts\, Columbus; and White Flag Projects\, St. Louis. Moyer’s large-scale outdoor sculpture Doors for Doris (2020)\, commissioned by Public Art Fund\, was on view in the Doris C. Freedman Plaza in Central Park\, New York from September 2020 through October 2021. Visitors are welcome to enjoy lunch from the Parrish Café during the program held in the Lichtenstein Theater. \nAbout the Authors\nRobert Cody\, AIA\, NCARB\, LEED AP\, is Partner at Amoia Cody Architecture\, Professor of Practice\, and Former Associate Dean and Chair at the New York Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Design. For over 30 years\, he has worked on projects from wood-frame houses to precast concrete office buildings\, interior renovations to freestanding towers\, design competitions to physical construction\, and ecological design\, to The Museum of Modern Art. Cody has practiced and taught architectural design theory\, building construction\, and architecture studios with particular concentration in the comprehensive design studio. He has coordinated and taught travel studios in Italy and Scandinavia. He has also been the New York Tech NCARB AXP Coordinator and AIAS Faculty Advisor since 2012. \nAngela Amoia is Partner at Amoia Cody Architecture and Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture at the New York Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Design. Amoia has practiced and taught history\, theory\, architecture studios\, including the comprehensive design studio\, and study abroad in Italy since graduating from Columbia University with a Master’s degree in Advanced Architectural Design. Her role as project manager ranged in scale from skyscrapers to large-scale academic facilities and residential houses and loft buildings. \nAbout the Book\nIn the contemporary practice of architecture\, digital design and fabrication are emergent technologies in transforming how architects present a design and form a material strategy that is responsible\, equitable\, sustainable\, resilient\, and forward-looking. Dede is active on several local boards and advisory committees; was recognized as one of the Top 100 Real Estate Women of the 21st Century by AREW; awarded New York State Women of Distinction (New York State); Certificate of Special Achievement for urban planning by the New Your State governor. Dede is an honors graduate from Williams College\, the Bearley School\, and holds a sailing captain’s license. With a dedicated and experienced day-to-day management team at the Inn\, Dede is focused on her passion to make the East End a sustainable year-round community through staff housing and tourism while maintaining the culture and beauty of our community. \nJolie Parcher is the Founder and Director of Mandala Yoga Center for Healing Arts and has been a certified yoga teacher from The Patanjali Yoga Center in Kathmandu\, Nepal since 1990. Jolie is certified as an Ayurvedic Diet and Lifestyle Practitioner from the Kripalu School of Ayurveda and is trained as a practitioner of the Ayurvedic hands on Treatments as well as an Aromatherapist. \nJohn J. The program will take place in the galleries among the works Sultan selected for the exhibition. \nSultan is one of forty-one artists with deep local roots who were invited to select works from the collection to be shown along with their own. Choosing works by Charles Burchfield\, R.M. Fischer\, Valerie Jaudon\, Roy Lichtenstein\, Donald Lipski\, Dan Rizzie\, and Keith Sonnier\, he says: “All of the art I chose is abstract in nature even if it contains a kind of image—the images are loaded. They are art historical torn from the natural world but not bound by it. The artists are all mature and yet have a certainty of their craft. There is no guesswork in the making\, only in the message.” \nArtists Choose Parrish is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education\, with additional support from Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator\, and Brianna L. Hernández\, Assistant Curator. \nAbout \nDONALD SULTAN (b. 1951\, Asheville\, NC) earned his BFA from the University of North Carolina\, Chapel Hill\, and MFA from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago before establishing himself in New York in 1975. Since his solo debut in 1977\, Sultan has excelled as a distinguished painter\, printmaker\, and sculptor. Renowned for seamlessly merging traditional and modern elements\, Sultan’s large-scale paintings\, often classified as still lifes\, present bold compositions employing industrial materials like tar and concrete\, contributing to the unique texture and character of his pieces. Sultan’s art\, described by him as a blend of basic geometric and organic forms with a formal purity\, has left an indelible mark on contemporary art. Sultan’s subjects evolve organically\, maintaining powerful statements amid abstraction. All sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable. \n  \nSPEAKER BIOS \nAlex Bujoreanu began his career in hospitality over 20 years ago while studying at the School of Hospitality and Tourism in Lleida\, Spain. Alex later worked and ran several fine restaurants in Spain\, Sweden\, Italy\, and finally\, New York\, where he received high praise for his tapas menu; the N.Y. Times declared it a “hands-down winner.” Alex shares his passion for healthy clean food through his dishes by not using butter\, flour and only the finest quality and locally sourced ingredients.\n\nShannon Willey is the visionary behind Sea Green Designs\, where the essence of coastal living meets eco-conscious elegance. Since launching her business in 2000\, Shannon has skillfully blended her academic roots – a fusion of Fashion Design from FIT and Environmental Studies from SUNY Buffalo – to revolutionize the concept of home aesthetics. With an innate love for color and texture\, and an expert eye for proportions\, Shannon’s design philosophy is deeply influenced by the serene and timeless beauty of the coastal Hamptons. \nGianna Volpe is a passionate and award-winning writer\, multi-platform reporter and host of “The Heart of The East End” on Long Island’s only local NPR radio station\, WLIW-FM. She broadcasts LIVE from the WLIW-FM studio in Southampton 9-11 every weekday morning featuring music from all decades and genres\, as well as interviews with folks from all walks of life\, which were lauded by the New York Press Association twice-over in 2023. Encore episodes of The Heart air every midnight on 88.3 FM throughout the East End and Coastal Connecticut\, 96.9 FM in Western Suffolk and are streamed/archived online at WLIW.org/radio. \nKeith E. Davis opened the first Golden Pear on Mainstreet\, Southampton in 1987\, followed by East Hampton in 1991\, and Bridgehampton in 1996. Keith learned the restaurant business through many years of experience that began at the age of 14 washing dishes and preparing food at a local seafood restaurant. During his college years\, Keith worked four summer seasons at the famous Dune Deck Hotel located on the Atlantic Ocean in Westhampton Beach. There he refined his front-of-house skills and worked very closely with the chef. Keith learned off-premise-catering while working as a sous-chef at Barefoot Contessa\, a beautiful gourmet food store-market-caterer\, before an opportunity opened up for\nKeith to take over the fabulous location on the corner we all now know as the Golden Pear Café Southampton. \nCarmindy Bowyer is a New York-based editorial makeup artist\, beauty/lifestyle expert\, TV personality\, author\, speaker\, and entrepreneur with over 30 years of experience in beauty. For over a decade\, millions of viewers counted on Carmindy to teach them her insider makeup tips and tricks on TLC’s hit show “What Not To Wear” but what really inspired her viewers was her confidence-boosting attitude towards everyone. Carmindy taught them how to see their unique beauty and stop any negative commentary going on in their heads. She showed that people of all ages\, skin tones\, and features had the right to love and celebrate themselves. Carmindy is currently working out of Water Mill\, NY on her national projects. \nRandy King has been involved in every facet of the fitness industry on the east end of Long Island and New York City for at least 30 years. He managed the Gym Source Southampton location\, a former leader in residential and commercial fitness distribution\, and was responsible for driving sales and maintaining positive customer interactions. Randy branched out on his own in 2021 forming Shinnecock Functional Fitness\, LLC a rubber gym floor installation company. He actively coordinates and designs flooring options with some of the biggest builders and architects in the Hamptons. Shinnecock Functional Fitness is also aligned in partnership with Gym Tech Fitness which both provide a truly boutique home gym design experience like no other. Randy has been married to his wife Nora for 23 years and currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Shinnecock Indian Nation Council of Trustees.

SUMMARY:Talk | Artists Choose Parrish: Ned Smyth and John Torreano
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$5 Members | $16 Adults | $12 Seniors | Free for Students & Children \nJoin us for a conversation with artists Ned Smyth and John Torreano\, whose work is on view in Artists Choose Parrish\, Part II\, moderated by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education. The landmark exhibition honors the East End’s rich artistic legacy and brings greater attention to major artists practicing here today. Forty-one renowned artists with deep local roots were invited to select works from the collection to be shown along with their own\, offering new perspectives and interpretations of the Parrish’s permanent collection. \nFor his Artists Choose Parrish presentation\, Ned Smyth chose Louise Nevelson’s Untitled (ca. late 1970s) painted wood sculpture to be in direct dialogue with his two cast concrete works from 1973\, Post Annunciation and Renaissance Plan. When deciding on which pieces he would like to include\, Smyth explained “I have always wanted to show my early minimalist architectural work at the Parrish. When I was asked to be part of Artists Choose Parrish\, I immediately suggested showing my cast concrete two-by-four architectural pieces.” Smyth was drawn to Nevelson’s work due to their shared monochromatic palette and their mutual success of commissioned work during their careers. \nWhen going through the Museum’s collection\, John Torreano instantly thought of Dennis Oppenheim’s Splash Building (2009) to show alongside his works\, 4 x 4 (1989) and Paint in Some Holes (1995). When discussing his process for selecting Oppenheim’s late work\, he noted\, “Splash Building (2009) was one of the first works I thought of when asked to choose from the Parrish’s permanent collection. I was attracted to its scale\, the combination of materials and mix of colors and light\, but most important\, its potential multiple interpretations: a building or a splash building\, a Pop artwork\, a three-dimensional drawing\, etc. My experience with it is always a delightful surprise.” Torreano’s subject matter of the universe is on full display with his sculptural paintings that evoke the vastness of the cosmos with their large\, jeweled panels\, a common feeling of Torreano’s evoked by Oppenheim’s oversized interpretation of a splashing water droplet. \n  \nFriday Nights are made possible\, in part\, by The Corcoran Group.

DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$5 Members | $16 Adults (Nonmembers) | $12 Seniors | Free for Students\, Children \nJoin us for a reading and presentation by author Prudence Peiffer following the recent release of her book The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever\, the never-before-told story of an obscure little street at the lower tip of Manhattan and the remarkable artists who got their start there. Recently reviewed by The New York Times\, THE SLIP delves into six visual artist biographies\, tenderly researched with an interpretive mood that echoes the debate on a philosophical approach to art making\, with “a neighborhood-eye view of art history” (Walker Mimms\, New York Times\, 2023). Peiffer’s publication includes profiles of several Parrish permanent collection artists – Agnes Martin\, James Rosenquist\, and Jack Youngerman\, alongside Robert Indiana\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Delphine Seyrig\, and Lenore Tawney. Peiffer will read excerpts from the book and discuss several of the artists\, their works\, and historical photo references. \nAbout THE SLIP\nFor just over a decade\, from 1956 to 1967\, a collection of dilapidated former sail-making warehouses clustered at the lower tip of Manhattan became the quiet epicenter of the art world. Coenties Slip\, a dead-end street near the water\, was home to a circle of wildly talented and varied artists that included Robert Indiana\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Agnes Martin\, James Rosenquist\, Delphine Seyrig\, Lenore Tawney\, and Jack Youngerman. As friends and inspirations to one another\, they created a unique community for unbridled creative expression and experimentation\, and the works they made at the Slip would go on to change the course of American art. \nNow\, for the first time\, Prudence Peiffer pays homage to these artists and the unsung impact their work had on the direction of late twentieth-century art and film. This remarkable biography\, as transformative as the artists it illuminates\, questions the very concept of a “group” or “movement\,” as it spotlights the Slip’s eclectic mix of gender and sexual orientation\, abstraction and Pop\, experimental film\, painting\, and sculpture\, assemblage and textile works. \nAbout Prudence Peiffer\nPrudence Peiffer is an art historian\, writer\, and editor\, specializing in modern and contemporary art. She is the Director of Content at MoMA\, New York. She received her Ph.D from Harvard University; following a postdoctoral fellowship at Columbia University\, she was a Senior Editor at Artforum magazine from 2012-2017\, and Digital Content Director at David Zwirner in 2018.
