The artist’s ongoing interest in literature\, philosophy\, and the Theatre of the Absurd manifests in his playful investigation of the folly of existence and our shared search for meaning and resolve. Material and subject are of equal importance for Ryman\, whose work reveals his intuitive approach to sculpting diverse materials into expressive forms that examine essential aspects of the human experience. \nWill Ryman (American\, b. 1969) lives and works in New York. Selected museum exhibitions and public art installations include Rites of Spring\, LongHouse Reserve\, East Hampton (2019—2021); Pac-Lab and Sisyphus\, Sculpture Park at Art Omi\, Ghent\, New York (2020); Will Ryman: La Villette\, Parc de La Villette\, Paris (2018); Cadillac\, College for Creative Studies\, Detroit (2017); Bird\, Flatiron Plaza\, New York (2013); Desublimation of the Rose\, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden\, Coral Gables (2011); Rose\, The Phillips Collection\, Washington\, D.C. SUMMARY:Panel | William Merritt Chase and Walter Granville-Smith: American Impressionists of the East End
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nFree for Members | Free for Resident Benefits PassHolders | $25 Guests of Member | $30 Adults | Free for Students & Children \nTo celebrate the opening of William Merritt Chase and Walter Granville-Smith: American Impressionists of the East End\, please join us at 4 PM in the Lichtenstein Theater for a conversation between Kaitlin Halloran\, Associate Curator and Publications Manager; Suzanne Siano\, Chief Conservator and Director\, Modern Art Conservation; and Shauna Young\, Senior Conservator\, Modern Art Conservation. \nAdvance registration is recommended. Focusing on how William Merritt Chase (American\, 1849–1916) and Walter Granville-Smith (American\, 1870–1938) shared interest in the region\, the exhibition will present an exciting dialogue between the painters’ work. Ranging from depictions of the social atmosphere of the bourgeoisie to more intimate depictions of family life and landscapes\, the exhibition explores how two painters with varied training found new inspiration on Long Island’s East End. \n \nWilliam Merritt Chase and Walter Granville-Smith: American Impressionists of the East End is part of the Museum’s USA250: Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness\, a year-long program organized in response to the United States’ semiquincentennial in 2026. The USA250 exhibition series will reflect on the nation’s history and founding values\, examine our present moment\, and imagine new ways of moving forward\, while recognizing the contributions of regional artists to the broader landscape of American art and culture. Responding to language in the Declaration of Independence that states “liberty” as one of the inalienable rights\, William Merritt Chase and Walter Granville-Smith: American Impressionists of the East End recognizes the contributions of regional artists to the broader landscape of American art and culture. \nWilliam Merritt Chase and Walter Granville-Smith: American Impressionists of the East End is organized by Kaitlin Halloran\, Associate Curator and Publications Manager. \nExhibition Support\n \nWilliam Merritt Chase and Walter Granville-Smith: American Impressionists of the East End is made possible\, in part\, by Stephanie Neville and Alan Beller; the County of Suffolk; the National Endowment for the Arts; Linda Hackett and Melinda Hackett/ CAL Foundation; and a donor who wishes to remain Anonymous. \n \nThe Parrish Art Museum’s programs are made possible\, in part\, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature\, and by the property taxpayers from the Southampton Union Free School District and the Tuckahoe Common School District.
