DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nLIVESTREAM\n$12 | Free for Members \nJoin us in celebrating our 10th anniversary in Water Mill in a conversation with Ascan Mergenthaler and Philip Schmerbeck—the architects from the internationally acclaimed firm Herzog & de Meuron who designed the new building—and Hank Willis Thomas\, presenting artist and co-curator of Another Justice: US is Them–Hank Willis Thomas | For Freedoms. Moderated by Museum Executive Director Mónica Ramírez-Montagut\, who holds a Ph.D. in architecture\, the discussion will explore the relationship between the Museum’s design from the architects’ perspective\, as well as from the viewpoint of an artist curating and exhibiting work in the space. \nThe innovative design by Herzog & de MeuronSenior Partner Mergenthaler and Studio Director Schmerbeck integrates architecture and landscape in a plan that both respects and reflects the singular natural beauty and rich artistic legacy of Long Island’s East End. Sited on 14 acres\, the purpose-built structure suggests the vernacular architecture of sheds and potato barns that for generations doubled as artist workspaces. Inspired by the light\, water\, and sky that create the unique atmosphere of the region\, the building features sky-lit galleries that mimic the light and proportions of typical artist’s studio. \n \nIn the exhibition Another Justice: US is Them\, on view through November 6\, Thomas along with other featured artists adopt dynamic and responsive approaches to activate the full volume of the architectural space. Thomas’s wall-sized works made from deconstructed flags envelop the gallery space in fabric. In the Spine\, Christine Sun Kim creates an immersive pathway between the galleries with bold\, vibrant notations from the American Sign Language. Outdoors on the building exterior and grounds\, Thomas activates the museum’s southern-facing façade with a 55–foot neon sign clearly visible from the highway. Muna Malik’s 20–foot longmirrored acrylic boat sited in the Museum’s Meadowentices visitors to venture into and explore the landscape. \nAbout Ascan Mergenthaler\nHerzog & de Meuron Senior Partner Ascan Mergenthaler is in charge of projects in Europe\, Asia\, and the Americas and has led the realization of the de Young Museum in San Francisco; the Parrish Art Museum on Long Island\, New York; the Tate Modern Project in London; the Blavatnik School of Government in Oxford; the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg; 56 Leonard Street in New York City; and Tai Kwun\, Centre for Heritage & Arts; as well as M+\, a cultural center for 20th and 21st century art\, design\, architecture\, and the moving image in Hong Kong. He is currently working on several high-profile projects\, such as the Neue Nationalgalerie—Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts in Berlin; and Triangle in Paris—the first high-rise since Tour Montparnasse—that will significantly contribute to the Parisian skyline. Mergenthaler first joined Herzog & de Meuron as an intern in 1993. After completing his studies at Stuttgart University and The Bartlett\, University College London\, he became an architect at Herzog & de Meuron in 1998 and Partner in 2004. \nAbout Philip Schmerbeck\nPhilip Schmerbeck is Studio Director USA at Herzog & de Meuron. He began his collaboration with the firm in Basel in 2007 and became an Associate in 2011. After relocating to the New York office in 2008\, he became project manager in charge of the Parrish Art Museum through its completion in 2012. Schmerbeck has maintained oversight of a diverse range of U.S. projects as Project Director\, including the completion of 215 Chrystie (Public Hotel) and160 Leroy Street in NYC. He is currently overseeing the Powerhouse Arts project\, a contemporary arts fabrication center nearing completion in Brooklyn\, New York\, and the Brooks Museum of Art in Memphis\, Tennessee. He became Studio Director USA in 2022. Schmerbeck studied Architecture at Mississippi State University\, Jackson\, Mississippi\, and graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree.  \nAbout Hank Willis Thomas\nHank Willis Thomas (b. 1976\, Plainfield\, NJ; lives and works in Brooklyn\, NY) is a conceptual artist working primarily with themes related to perspective\, identity\, commodity\, media\, and popular culture. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad including the International Center of Photography\, New York; Guggenheim Museum Bilbao\, Spain; Musée du quai Branly\, Paris; Hong Kong Arts Centre\, Hong Kong\, and the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art\, Netherlands. Thomas holds a B.F.A. from New York University\, New York\, NY (1998) and an M.A./M.F.A. from the California College of the Arts\, San Francisco\, CA (2004). He received honorary doctorates from the Maryland Institute of Art\, Baltimore\, MD and the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts\, Portland\, ME in 2017. \nAbout Herzog & De Meuron\nEstablished in Basel\, Switzerland\, in 1978\, Herzog & de Meuron is a partnership led by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron together with Senior Partners Christine Binswanger\, Ascan Mergenthaler\, Stefan Marbach\, Esther Zumsteg\, and Jason Frantzen. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nJoin For Freedoms at the Parrish on Friday\, September 30\, as Indigenous artists Jeremy Dennis (Shinnecock) and Koyoltzintli Miranda-Rivadeneira (Ch’ixi Ecuadorian)\, both featured on the Shinnecock Monuments\, discuss the Land Back movement in a round table discussion with Shinnecock Council Trustee and attorney\, Kelly Dennis\, and artist Nour Batyne. \nThe roundtable is part of a series of programs in conjunction with the exhibition\, Another Justice: US is Them–Hank Willis Thomas | For Freedoms (July 23 to November 6) and offsite at the Shinnecock Monuments\, organized in partnership with The Watermill Center who has invited several artists from the For Freedoms collective for a residency from September 14 to October 7\, 2022\, as part of their Inga Maren Otto Fellowship for visual artists. \nDuring the residency\, For Freedoms\, in collaboration with the Parrish and Watermill\, will organize a series of public programs\, workshops\, and thematic Town Halls with members of the East End community. Taking place at both The Watermill Center and the Parrish\, each program will be centered on an Another Justice campaign themes. \nAnother Justice: Justice Makers Workshop\nSaturday\, October 1\, 2022\, 11 AM\, The Watermill Center \nInteractive crafting workshop on the For Freedoms Infinite Atlas and AJ Mixtape with For Freedoms Co-Founder Eric Gottesman and his son Sika. What is your role? \nAnother Justice: Viewpoints | Gender Justice\nThursday\, October 6\, 6 to 7 pm\, The Watermill Center \nArtists Pamela Council and Zoë Buckman\, featured in Another Justice: US is Them at the Parrish\, and special guest performer Autumn Breon discuss gender justice in Viewpoints\, The Watermill Center’s year-round conversation series\, granting art enthusiasts the opportunity to gather and discuss creative themes vital to the contemporary moment. \nAbout For Freedoms\nFor Freedoms is an artist collective that centers on art and creativity as a catalyst for transformative connection and collective liberation. By wielding the power of art\, the group aims to deepen and expand its capacity to interrogate what is and imagine what could be. An art collective founded in 2016 by a coalition of artists\, academics\, and organizers—including Hank Willis Thomas\, Eric Gottesman\, Michelle Woo\, and Wyatt Gallery—For Freedoms promotes infinite expansion through art\, and is dedicated to awakening a culture of listening\, healing\, and justice. \n  \nAbout the Speakers\nJeremy Dennis is a contemporary fine art photographer and a tribal member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation. In his work\, he explores indigenous identity\, culture\, and assimilation. He received a 2016 Dreamstarter Grant from Running Strong for American Indian Youth to pursue On This Site\, which uses photography to showcase significant Native American sites on Long Island. A Parrish collection artist\, Dennis was the 2018 Parrish Road Show artist\, and part of Art on the Grid by Public Art Fund in 2020. He lives on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton\, where he founded Ma’s House\, a BIPOC artist residency. \n  \nKoyoltzintli Miranda-Rivadeneria is an interdisciplinary artist\, plant worker\, and educator living in New York. She grew up in the coast of Ecuador and the Andes\, geographies that permeate her work. She focuses on geopoetics\, ancestral technologies\, ritual\, and storytelling through collaborative processes and personal narratives. Intersectional theories and earth-based healing inform her practice.\, Work by Miranda-Rivadeneria\, who was nominated for Prix Pictet in 2019\, has been exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington\, DC\, the United Nations\, Aperture Foundation\, and the Photographic Museum of Humanity. She received the Photographic Fellowship at the Musee du Quai Branly in Paris and a NYFA Fellowship. \n  \nKelly Dennis is a licensed attorney specializing in Federal American Indian Law\, and Secretary of the Council of Trustees for the Shinnecock Indian Nation. She is a newly appointed member of the Department of Interior Advisory Committee for Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland representing Eastern Regional Tribal Nations. Dennis is also an artist primarily working in painting to depict culturally significant symbolism and narratives. \n  \nNour Batyne is a creative producer\, facilitator\, and artist whose work lies at the intersection of immersive storytelling\, futures thinking\, and social innovation. She is a Next Generation Foresight Practitioner Fellow at the School of International Futures\, and serves as an Associate Instructor for the Nonprofit Management M.S. program at Columbia University. With a global portfolio of work\, Batyne is currently based in New York City and is an organizer for the Wide Awakes\, an open-source network that radically reimagines the future through creative collaboration. \n  \nAbout The Watermill Center\nFounded in 1992 by avant-garde visionary Robert Wilson\, The Watermill Center is an interdisciplinary laboratory for the arts and humanities situated on ten acres of Shinnecock ancestral territory on Long Island’s East End. With an emphasis on creativity and collaboration\, The Center offers year-round artist residencies and education programs\, providing a global community with the time\, space\, and freedom to create and inspire. The Watermill Center’s rural campus combines multifunctional studios with ten acres of manicured grounds and gardens\, housing a carefully curated art collection\, expansive research library\, and archives illustrating the life and work of Artistic Director\, Robert Wilson.
