SUMMARY:Music | Jacques Schwarz-Bar: Jewish Chants and Afro-Caribbean Jazz Quintet
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nSummer concerts on the Terrace continue with a live jazz performance by Jacques Schwarz-Bart: Jewish Chants and Afro-Caribbean Jazz Quintet\, co-presented with Hamptons Jazz Fest. As part of the second annual Hamptons Jazz Fest\, Schwarz-Bart brings exciting lyrical jazz styles to the Parrish.  \nBorn in Guadalupe\, Jacques Schwarz-Bart pursued a path of music and mysticism\, playing alongside luminaries such as Roy Hargrove\, Danilo Perez\, Ari Hoenig\, Meshell n’Degeocello and D’angelo or Chucho Valdes. He outright created two surging new styles: Gwoka Jazz\, and Voodoo Jazz\, reuniting jazz music with its Afro-Caribbean and spiritual origins. With impressionistic writing\, powerful tone\, and wide-ranging language – both lyrical and angular – these jazz styles have fueled a growing presence on the world stage. Leading the Gwoka Jazz Project\, Schwarz-Bart recorded two albums for Universal\, Soné Ka La and Abyss\, which built his career as an internationally acclaimed jazz musician and band leader.  \nIn 2010\, he released Rise Above\, which revives his long-lasting collaboration with singer – and spouse – Stephanie McKay and blends NY urban mood and Caribbean feelings. Schwarz-Bart went on to work on projects and recordings including The Art of Dreaming\, Jazz Racine Haiti\, Creole Spirits\, Voodoo Jazz Trio and Hazzan. In 2016\, Schwarz-Bart joined the faculty at Berklee College of Music as an Associate Professor for ensembles of jazz and neo-soul music. \n  \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. SUMMARY:Live-Stream Performance: Lonnie Holley Concert and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:The Parrish Art Museum presents a special live-stream evening of conversation and performance with visual artist\, musician\, filmmaker\, and educator Lonnie Holley. Throughout the program\, Holley will be in conversation with Chief Curator Alicia Longwell\, play the keyboard and sing\, and will be accompanied by Washington Duke on drums/percussion.\n \nHolley\, whose exhibition\, Everything That Wasn’t White: Lonnie Holley at the Elaine de Kooning House\, will be on view at the Parrish from April 24-September 6\, was a recent Artist-in-Residence at the Elaine de Kooning House in East Hampton\, NY. He did not start making and performing music in a studio nor does his creative process mirror that of the typical musician. His music and lyrics are improvised on the spot and morph and evolve with every event\, concert\, and recording. In Holley’s original art environment\, he would construct and deconstruct his visual works\, repurposing their elements for new pieces. This often led to the transfer of individual narratives into the new work creating a cumulative composite image that has depth and purpose beyond its original singular meaning. The layers of sound in Holley’s music\, likewise\, are the result of decades of evolving experimentation. \nHolley’s artwork has most recently been in exhibitions at The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco\, The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the National Gallery of Art\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, and MASS MoCA. In September of 2018\, he released his third studio album\, MITH\, on Jagjaguwar. The album made numerous “best of” year-end lists\, including those of the New Yorker and Newsweek. His first film\, I Snuck Off the Slave Ship\, premiered in 2019 at the Sundance Film Festival. \nAbout Lonnie Holley\nLonnie Holley was born in 1950 in Birmingham\, Alabama. From the age of five\, he worked various jobs: picking up trash at a drive-in movie theatre\, washing dishes\, and cooking. He lived with foster parents in a whiskey house\, boarded on one side by the state fairgrounds and on another by a drive-in movie theater\, until the age of eleven\, when he was picked up by the Birmingham Police Department for violating the city-wide curfew\, imposed during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. He was sent to the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children\, which was little more than a slave camp for African American youth. His early life was chaotic\, to say the least\, and Holley was never afforded the pleasure of a real childhood. After his birth family discovered his whereabouts\, he returned to Birmingham to live with his paternal grandmother. For the next ten years he would have a series of jobs\, which included working for the Campbell Soup Company picking vegetables\, working as a greenskeeper at a Country Club in Florida\, and working as a chef at the Walt Disney World resort in Orlando when it opened. He returned to Birmingham in his early 20s. \nSince 1979\, Holley has devoted his life to the practice of improvisational creativity. His art and music\, born out of struggle\, hardship\, but perhaps more importantly\, out of furious curiosity and biological necessity\, has manifested itself in drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, photography\, performance\, filmmaking\, printmaking\, and sound. Holley’s sculptures are constructed from found materials in the oldest tradition of African American sculpture. Objects\, already imbued with cultural and artistic metaphor\, are combined into narrative sculptures that commemorate places\, people\, and events. His work is now in collections of major museums throughout the country\, on permanent display in the United Nations\, and have been displayed in the White House Rose Garden. \nSince 2010\, he has lived and worked out of Atlanta\, Georgia. \nAbout Washington Duke\nPlaying drums seemed to come naturally to Washington (Washy) Duke. At the age of ten\, his first music teacher gave him a drum kit\, and mastering the instrument became a lifelong pursuit. By thirteen years old\, Washy had a band\, covering Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix at friends’ birthday parties. At eighteen\, he was recruited by Dr. Paul Jeffrey to come to Duke University to play drums in the Jazz Ensemble. Jeffrey noticed an innate musicality to Washy’s playing\, and hired him to play in his own quartet\, even though Jazz was still a foreign idiom to Washy. But\, having been a protégé of Sonny Rollins\, Thelonious Monk\, and Charles Mingus\, Jeffrey took a sink or swim approach\, and gave Washy most of his education on the bandstand. In his first year at Duke\, Washy performed with Jazz greats John Stubblefield\, Walter Bishop Jr.\, Ray Bryant\, and Curtis Fuller. At the end of that year\, Jeffrey and Fuller asked Washy to come to France and record on their album\, Together in Monaco. Washy was nineteen years old. He has since gone on to study with legendary drummer and teacher Michael Carvin and has spent the better part of the last twenty years as a drummer and bandleader for numerous acts across all genres of popular music. 2020 made performing nearly impossible\, but Washy used the time to practice daily\, and return to his study of the art of drumming. \n\nFriday Nights are made possible\, in part\, by Presenting Sponsor:\nAdditional support provided by Sandy and Stephen Perlbinder.\n

SUMMARY:Music on the Terrace: Hopefully Forgiven
DESCRIPTION:The program has sold out. Please see the Parrish calendar for other upcoming Friday Night Programs.\nHopefully Forgiven – voted ‘Best Band in the Hamptons’ by Dan’s Papers – is a high energy\, harmony-soaked cocktail of American music. Singer/songwriters Telly Karoussos and ‘Alabama Brad’ Penuel deliver big harmonies and authentic songwriting that transcend the ‘Americana’ genre and has attracted a devoted multi-generational fan base. \nThe brotherhood that is Hopefully Forgiven began shortly after a chance meeting through an internet post when Brad offered his Brooklyn railroad apartment to Telly in exchange for watching his dog. After sizing each other up and realizing they shared a passion for music and surfing\, Brad said “I think this will work. My house is yours– you can even play my guitar if you want….just don’t touch my boots.” Telly didn’t and they\, along with Ben Goodale (Bass) and Fred Trumpy (Drums)\, soon began working up their songs\, along with classics by the Stones\, the Band\, Van Morrison\, and the course for Hopefully Forgiven was set. \nHopefully Forgiven has recorded with Rick Davies (Supertramp)\, Chuck Burgi (Billy Joel)\, and currently has a song on SiriusXM Coffeehouse Radio. They will be recording an album this year (‘20) with Downtown Music Group (NYC) and touring extensively at venues and private events nationally. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is required.\nAll tickets are sold pre-event and online only. SUMMARY:Jazz on the Terrace: Philippe Lemm Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Philippe Lemm Trio\, led by drummer Philippe Lemm\, and featuring Angelo Di Loreto on piano\, and Jeff Koch on bass\, is continually proving to be one of the most exciting and electrifying jazz trio’s around today. The group’s repertoire draws heavily from re-imaginations of jazz standards in a way that both defies genre and corresponds to any modern jazz fan. \nThe group uses their trust and understanding of one another’s musical tendencies to create passionate musical soundscapes\, which range from traditional jazz to the progressive rock/classical-influenced music. Hearing the trio is a special and unforgettable experience\, and you will be captivated after listening to one piece. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is required. \nAll tickets are sold pre-event and online only. SUMMARY:OptoSonic [UnLock] (BYOTea)
DESCRIPTION:LEARN MORE \n  \nPODCAST: Corinne Erni with OptoSonic Tea \n\nOptoSonic Tea\, NowNet Arts\, and the Parrish Art Museum join forces to present OptoSonic [UnLock] (BYOTea)\, a community collaborative\, audio-visual live improvisation network event with some 50 artists from all over the world coming together over several time zones. Taking place on Sunday\, April 26\, from 3pm-11pm EDT (New York Time)\, smaller groups of the participating video/film and music/sound artists will perform simultaneously at any given time over the course of the performance. \n“The event is an exploration that will be new to many of the artists and musicians. It is less about the individual artist or musicians than about everybody performing together\, something that musicians are much more used to than live visual artists\,” said the organizers and curators Katherine Liberovskaya and Ursula Scherrer (OptoSonic Tea)\, and Sarah Weaver (NowNet Arts). \nThe event will take place on Zoom on the viewer’s computer screen. Visual and sonic performers will inhabit the digital environment with a wide variety of techniques\, materials and instruments: from celluloid film and slides\, lights\, video software\, puppet-like interventions with objects\, movement\, to audio synthesizers\, laptop programs\, electronic devices\, acoustic instruments\, and vocal approaches. \nArtists: Ximena Alarcon\, Robert Appleton\, Miah Artola\, Alain Baumann\, Kjell Bjorgeengen\, Brian Chase\, CHiKA\, Yoshiko Chuma\, Anastasia Clarke\, Brandon Collwes\, Michael Delia\, Alexandra Dementieva\, Antonio Della Marina\, R. Luke DuBois\, Michael Egger\, Jorgen van Eijk\, Bradley Eros\, David First\, Kit J. Fitzgerald\, Asi Föcker\, Lee Frohlicher\, Richard Garet\, Simon Grab\, Andy Guhl\, Glen Hall\, Shelley Hirsch\, Flo Kaufmann\, Scott Kiernan\, Carole Kim\, John King\, Katherine Liberovskaya\, David Linton\, Jeanne Liotta\, Lore Lixenberg\, Luis Macias\, Geoff Matters\, Kenta Nagai\, Dafna Naphtali\, Andrew Neumann\, Daniel Neumann\, Phill Niblock\, Nao Nishihara\, Matthew Ostrowski\, Marie Helene Parent\, Andrea Parkins\, Juan Parra\, Anna Pasztor\, Kurt Ralske\, Bradford Reed\, Scarlet Rivera\, Diane Roblin\, Rosa Sanchez\, Ursula Scherrer\, Peter Shapiro\, Joseph Sledgianowski\, Lisa Sokolov\, Jacob Sokolov-Gonzalez\, Hans Tammen\, Laurenz Theinert\, Keiko Uenishi\, Silvia Villaba\, Jane Wang\, Beth Warshafsky\, Sarah Weaver\, Anna Wellmer\, Sofy Yuditskaya\, Mia Zabelka\, Alessandra Zucchi \nABOUT\nOptoSonic Tea was conceived in 2006 by intermedia artists Katherine Liberovskaya and Ursula Scherrer as a series of salon-style meetings that explore various forms of live visuals and their interaction with live audio\, followed by an informal discussion about the artists’ practices over a cup of green tea. \nOn September 27\, the Parrish Art Museum invited OptoSonic Tea to present an evening-length performance\, OptoSonic Tea @ the Parrish\, featuring 18 of the world’s most innovative video and sound artists to interact with the architecture and landscape of the Museum. The durational and site-specific group improvisation featured visual artists performing live in different areas outside of the Museum building\, while live musicians and sound artists performed coordinated and spatialized works by composer and Diapason Gallery founder/director Michael J. Schumacher. The spectacle allowed over 400 visitors to experience the Herzog & de Meuron designed building in entirely new ways. \nNowNet Arts Inc. was founded in 2017 to produce and present contemporary network arts works\, technologies\, education programs\, and publications. Director Sarah Weaver is a pioneer in the field with artistic and socially-themed ensemble projects integrating jazz\, classical\, world\, electronics\, and multimedia influences\, utilizing network as compositional strategy. Network arts utilizes the Internet and related technologies as an artistic medium for works created for this platform.
