Ticketed guests\, please email info@parrishart.org to reschedule your unused August 2 Jazz tickets for one of our upcoming performances (August 16 or September 6.)* \nSummer Jazz on the Terrace returns this July through September 2024! Outdoor coolers and outside food are prohibited; food and beverages are available to purchase at the Parrish Café. \nJoin us Friday August 2nd for a performance by the Sean Mason Quintet. Born and raised in Charlotte\, North Carolina\, Sean Mason took to the piano at the late age of 13\, teaching himself by ear to play the styles of music he was most attracted to. His approach quickly evolved into a highly original language. Mason’s unique voice in jazz is steeped in the sound of the South\, allowing an extended time for groove while also displaying a vocabulary far beyond his years. As a bandleader\, he leads the Sean Mason Quintet\, a band assembled to play Sean’s original music\, which has been described as highly melodic and infectious. \n“I first got into music by going to church every Sunday\, but the movie Ray was the catalyst for me to actually begin playing piano\,” recalls Mason. “My grandmother gifted me a small Casio piano and from there I began teaching myself to play\, studying for countless hours and devoting concentrated time on developing my sound.” During his time in North Carolina\, Sean met jazz legend Branford Marsalis\, who was immediately taken by Sean’s musicality and recommended he move to New York. “I told my brother [Wynton Marsalis]\, ‘Be on the lookout for this kid\,’” Marsalis recalls. Upon his arrival\, Sean hit the ground running\, quickly securing performances and residencies at some of New York’s most prestigious jazz clubs\, all while attending The Juilliard School. \nNote: In the event of severely inclement weather\, ticket holders will be notified as soon as possible. SUMMARY:Listen | Alexandria Le\, Solo Piano
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$25 Members | $35 Adults (Nonmembers) | $20 for Students\, Children \nJoin us for a special Salon Series concert featuring soloist Alexandria Le\, laureate of the Pro Musicis International Award and the Ackerman Chamber Music Competition. In 2012\, Le won a coveted fellowship position with Ensemble Connect (formerly Ensemble ACJW\, the Academy of Carnegie Hall and the Juilliard School and the Weill Institute of Music) and has performed regularly at Carnegie Hall\, the Juilliard School\, and other venues around New York City. \nAmong the many selections in her Salon Series program\, Le’s dynamic pairings of American and non-American musical works will include two works that combine classical and pop music genres. French composer Francis Poulenc’s florid\, lyrical Improvisation no. 15: Hommage à Édith Piaf—the quintessential French chanteuse—is coupled with a piano arrangement of George Gershwin’s distinctly American Rhapsody in Blue that combines elements of classical and jazz\, established with the iconic opening siren-like clarinet riff and continuing with sections that evoke the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple in the 1920s. Her program also includes Claude Debussy’s Clair de Lune\, a hallmark of French Impressionism\, paired with Summerland from the 1935 suite Three Visions by William Grant Still\, often referred to as the “Dean of Afro-American Composers.” The suite tells the story of the soul’s journey\, with Summerland a metaphor for entering into heaven. \nPROGRAM \nThree Visions: 1. SUMMARY:Music | The Lighthouse Project: Tribute to Elvin Jones
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nOur Summer concerts in collaboration with Hamptons Jazz Fest conclude with The Lighthouse Project: Tribute to Elvin Jones\, a widely celebrated musician and drummer\, who jazz historian and critic Ted Goia calls “one of the most influential drummers in the history of jazz.” \nThe Lighthouse Project\, on this occasion featuring Adam Nussbaum on drums\, Gene Perla on bass\, and Jerry Bergonzie and Nicole Glover on saxophone\, brings together a rhythmic and chromatic approach to the “swing jazz” Jones famously redefined in collaboration with musician John Coltrane. The Lighthouse Project\, originally formed with David Liebman alongside Perla\, Nussbaum\, and Bergonzie\, resurrects the repertoire Perla and Liebman played with Jones in the early 1970s. This special tribute concert embodies the group’s commitment to rhythm\, beat\, and the spirit of the jazz Elvin Jones magnified. \nPlease bring your own chairs. SUMMARY:Music | Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nThe Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival returns to the Parrish Art Museum with a special outdoor concert that transcends cultures and times. The program alternates works for winds and strings\, beginning with Umoja for Wind Quintet by flutist/contemporary composer Valerie Coleman. The Swahili word for “unity\,” Umoja was originally a simple family call-and-response call for unity sung at Kwanzaa. Coleman arranged the tune for her wind quintet Imani Winds\, with the melody carried by French horn. BCMF’s string players take the stage for Trio for Strings in G minor (1894) by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Wind players return for the Humoreske for Wind Quintet (1939) by Viennese composer Alexander Zemlinsky. \nIn Jean Françaix’s String Trio in C (1933)\, three of the four brief movements are bright and crisp\, with a strong kinetic connection to the dance music the composer was writing at the time. BCMF wind players come together with oboe in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Quartet for Oboe\, Violin\, Viola\, and Cello\, K. 370/368b (1781)\, written for the composer’s friend—virtuoso oboist Friedrich Ramm. \nThe concert concludes with contemporary composer Derek Bermel’s Ghanaian dance-inspire\, Wanderings for Wind Quintet (1994) which alludes to the Muslim and Jewish quarters that exist side by without boundaries in Jerusalem’s Old City. Similarly\, in Bermel’s work\, musical threads of continuity appear and suddenly vanish\, remaining elusive. Wanderings reveals influences of gyil music of the Daghati and Lobi peoples\, who live in Northwestern Ghana\, Southern Burkina-Faso\, and Northeastern Ivory Coast. \nARTISTS\nMarya Martin\, flute\nBixby Kennedy\, clarinet\nJames Austin Smith\, oboe\nPeter Kolkay\, bassoon\nStewart Rose\, horn\nStella Chen\, violin\nCong Wu\, viola\nNicholas Canellakis\, cello \nAbout Bridgehampton Chamber Music\nSince 1984\, Bridgehampton Chamber Music has brought the very best of chamber music to Long Island’s East End. From a pair of concerts over a single weekend\, to a series of concerts over 5 weeks in the summer as well as a series of concerts each spring and fall\, BCM has become one of the country’s most highly regarded chamber music organizations in the country. Each year\, some of the world’s finest chamber musicians gather in Bridgehampton to create unique musical experiences. \nIn the event of rain\, the concert will be moved indoors to the Lichtenstein Theater. Advance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. Limited tickets will be available at the door. All sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable. \nAttendees at events in the Museum’s theater\, café\, or studio (ages 5 and older) are required to provide proof of full vaccination in order to maintain a mask-optional environment.
