SUMMARY:Curator-Led Tour | A New Subjectivity 1979/2024
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nMembers at the Parrish Contemporaries Circle level and above are invited to join us for a Curator-led tour of A New Subjectivity 1979/2024. Tour is limited to a group of 20. Advanced registration is recommended. Limited spaces will be available at the door. \nAbout the Exhibition\nA New Subjectivity 1979/2024 looks back at the momentous exhibition Nouvelle Subjectivité (A New Subjectivity) organized by the essayist and art historian Jean Clair in Brussels at the Palais des Beaux Arts in 1979. The exhibition at the Parrish pays tribute to the original exhibition by presenting a selection of works from several of the artists included in the original exhibition—Robert Guinan\, David Hockney\, Raymond Mason\, Philippe Roman\, and Sam Szafran as well as R.B. Kitaj from the Parrish’s collection—and works by artists whose work has continued the figurative traditions celebrated in Nouvelle Subjectivité\, some also drawn from the collection of the Parrish\, such as Rackstraw Downes\, Jane Freilicher\, and Howard Kanovitz\, and artists working today not in the collection\, such as Martí Cormand\, Jordan Casteel\, Peter Doig\, Jenna Gribbon\, and Arcmanoro Niles.

SUMMARY:Member Preview | Charlotte Park: The Life of Forms in Color & Ralph Gibson—Nature : Object
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n11 AM | Reception\n12 PM | Talk with artist Ralph Gibson \nMuseum Members are invited to an exhibition preview and reception celebrating the opening of Charlotte Park: The Life of Forms in Color and Ralph Gibson—Nature : Object. At 12 PM\, join artist Ralph Gibson for a talk. \nRalph Gibson. Photo: Bob Tursack\, 2022. \nAdvanced registration is required. Not a Parrish member? Join today → \n  \nAbout the Exhibitions\nCharlotte Park: The Life of Forms in Color is a survey comprising more than 70 paintings and works on paper\, drawn exclusively from the 2017 gift of works to the Parrish by the James and Charlotte Brooks Foundation. Overshadowed by the attention given to the work of her husband\, James Brooks\, Park kept a fairly low profile over the course of her career while painting some of the strongest and most brilliantly colored canvases of her time. Color and form\, often related to the living environment surrounding the studio she shared with her husband\, were strong and constant forces in her work. \nRalph Gibson—Nature : Object will feature a selection of photographs by Ralph Gibson from a series based on the relationship between shapes found in nature and human constructs; positing that nature is visually evident in all genres of industrial design\, and architecture is evoked in the correlation between form and ergonomic function. In this exhibition\, Gibson highlights the relationship between perspective\, color\, and proportion. The 35mm Leica format and optical glass are an essential component of the work\, and the dimensions of the frame are based on the ancient Greek “Golden Means.” \n  \nExhibition Support\nCharlotte Park: The Life of Forms in Color is made possible thanks to the generous support of the James and Charlotte Brooks Fund. \nRalph Gibson—Nature : Object is made possible\, in part\, thanks to the generous support of Leica Camera USA and Neda Young and Family. \n \nThe Parrish Art Museum’s programs are made possible\, in part\, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature\, and by the property taxpayers from the Southampton School District and the Tuckahoe Common School District.

SUMMARY:Studio Visit | Jennifer de Klaver
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nWe invite our Patron-level members and above to a private\, behind-the-scenes studio visit with artist Jennifer de Klaver in Southampton. This exclusive event offers a rare opportunity to explore de Klaver’s creative space and process up close and gain insight into how her work intertwines with nature and storytelling. Engage in an enriching conversation with the artist and fellow art enthusiasts while enjoying wine and light bites. Don’t miss this unique chance to connect with the artist and fellow patrons in an intimate and inspiring setting. \nRegistration is required. Limited space is available. \nThis event is intended for Members of the Parrish Art Museum at the Patron level and above. Please call if you would like to bring guests. \nAbout the Artist\nJennifer de Klaver is a painter based in Southampton\, New York\, whose abstract works merge gestural forms with a profound sense of calm and inevitability. “I am inspired by color\, sound\, and movement\,” she explains. “My art flows from the heart\, guided by intuition.” This intuitive process infuses her paintings with a deep connection to the soul\, evident in the emotive textures\, marks\, and meditative energy that characterize her work. \nde Klaver’s art delves into the most intimate connections to source. Through a hybrid form of abstract expressionism\, she plays with contrast\, color\, connectivity\, and a language tied to light—all inspired by the beauty of nature. \nGrowing up in Belgium\, de Klaver’s appreciation for the arts began early. As the daughter of a painter\, she traveled extensively throughout Europe\, immersing herself in the works of the great masters in Paris\, Rome\, Florence\, Barcelona\, and the Netherlands. For de Klaver\, painting is a form of meditation\, healing\, and inner storytelling—a process vividly expressed through the dynamic movements and calligraphic forms in her work. \nCurrently\, de Klaver paints out of a former commercial garage in Southampton\, New York. Her work has been featured in exhibitions in New York City and Southampton\, Art Market + Design Hamptons\, Hampton Holiday House + Designer Showhouse\, and Sotheby’s. She is currently exhibiting at Art D’Avendano (division of Jeff Lincoln Art + Design) at 200 North See\, Southampton through September 29th. \n

SUMMARY:Member Preview | Eddie Martinez: Buflies and Sam Moyer: Ferns Teeth
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n11 AM | Reception\n12 PM | Introductory talk with Chief Curator Corinne Erni and the artists \nMuseum Members are invited to celebrate the opening of Eddie Martinez: Buflies and Sam Moyer: Ferns Teeth. At 12 PM\, join us for an introductory talk between Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator of Art and Education\, and the artists. Advanced registration is required. \nNot a Parrish member? Join today →\n  \nCelebrated for his bright\, bold\, and colorful paintings\, Eddie Martinez will present a new body of work made specifically for the Parrish. Taking full advantage of the Museum’s expansive space and high ceilings\, Martinez is creating seven 12-foot tall Bufly paintings. Like much of his work\, these canvases are imbued with a personal iconography. The artist started the Bufly series in 2021 when his son Arthur who was two at the time became fascinated with butterflies\, mispronouncing them as “buflies.” Martinez has been painting them ever since. \nEddie Martinez: Buflies is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs\, with additional support from Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator. \nFollowing on the heels of the publication of her first career-spanning monograph\, Sam Moyer’s solo exhibition at the Parrish Art Museum will showcase the artist’s relationship to material and light as a throughline in her practice\, displaying the range of her processes\, and bodies of work\, across three galleries. Focusing each space on a specific material relationship\, Moyer presents a large-scale stone painting tailor-fit to the architecture of the room\, sculptural photographs whose composition are specific to the landscape of Eastern Long Island\, and a series of smaller\, more representational wall works. Consistent with Moyer’s habit of manifesting a directly tactile experience with the visual materials at hand\, two of the three galleries will be outfitted with artist-made marble benches and visitors will be able to play on hand-cast concrete backgammon boards in the Museum’s lobby. \nSam Moyer: Ferns Teeth is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs\, with additional support from Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator. \nExhibition Support\nEddie Martinez: Buflies is made possible\, in part\, thanks to the generous support of The Evelyn Toll Family Foundation\, Yanina Fuertes\, and a donor who wishes to remain Anonymous. \nSam Moyer: Ferns Teeth is made possible\, in part\, thanks to the generous support of Jacqueline Brody; The Deborah Buck Foundation; Linda Hackett and Melinda Hackett/ CAL Foundation; Sean Kelly\, New York/Los Angeles; BLUM; The Evelyn Toll Family Foundation; Herman Goldman Foundation; Lauren and Steven P. SUMMARY:Member Preview: Carmen Herrera: Estructuras Monumentales
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nJoin us to celebrate the opening of Carmen Herrera: Estructuras Monumentales at the Parrish. Carmen Herrera: Estructuras Monumentales features four large-scale sculptures in red\, blue\, yellow\, and green in the Museum’s South Meadow. Advanced registration is required. \nNot a Parrish member? Join today →\n  \nCarmen Herrera (American\, b. Cuba\, 1915–2022) is known for her hard-edge paintings\, prints\, and sculptures—often representing geometric shapes with both symmetrical and asymmetrical abstractions. The four works installed in the Meadow\, Angulo Azul (2017)\, Angulo Amarillo (2017)\, Estructura Verde (1966/2018)\, and Gemini (Red) (1971/2019) are part of Herrera’s series Estructuras\, which she initially envisioned as sketches and paintings in the 1960s. In 1971\, Herrera fabricated four Estructuras in wood—three wall-based works and one free-standing. However\, it was only in the final fifteen years of the artist’s life that she was able to realize her vision for these monumental sculptures on a larger scale. The Estructuras series at the Parrish provides an opportunity to view the acrylic and aluminum works the way Herrera imagined them—each piece fabricated to her exact color and shape standards.. \nCarmen Herrera: Estructuras Monumentales is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator of Art and Education\, and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs\, with additional support by Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator. \nExhibition Support\nThe Carmen Herrera: Estructuras Monumentales exhibition is made possible\, in part\, thanks to the generous support of Tony Bechara; The Fuhrman Family Foundation; Agnes Gund; Lisson Gallery; MOVADO; Estrellita and Daniel Brodsky; Jeff Lipsitz\, Allison Koffman\, and Family; and a donor who wishes to remain Anonymous. \nThe Parrish Art Museum’s programs are made possible\, in part\, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature\, and by the property taxpayers from the Southampton School District and the Tuckahoe Common School District. More than one hundred drawings\, paintings\, photographs\, sculptures\, and ceramics by thirty-seven artists from the Jordan Schnitzer Foundation will be exhibited. Among these are major postwar figures such as David Hockney\, Jasper Johns\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Ed Ruscha\, and Andy Warhol; contemporary artists including Enrique Chagoya\, Jenny Holzer\, Alison Saar\, Lorna Simpson\, and Rachel Whiteread; and artists with deep roots in the East End of Long Island\, including Robert Gober\, Roy Lichtenstein\, and Donald Sultan. The exhibition is organized by the University of Arizona Museum of Art and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation. \nThe exhibition relates to the East End of Long Island’s distinguished history as one of the most important fishing and agricultural regions in New York State. The area was developed into agricultural land by the 1640s\, and by the 1820s as many as 95 percent of the residents lived on farms. While Greenport and Sag Harbor were ports for trade and whaling\, Peconic Bay was known for its fish and shellfish. Today\, the East End remains an agricultural center\, producing more than one hundred different crops\, and an increasingly prominent wine region with more than sixty vineyards. \nIn conjunction with the exhibition and in celebration of the region’s agricultural history\, special food events will be organized in partnership with the James Beard Foundation\, local farmers\, and food organizations\, and will entail educational programming\, workshops\, and conversations featuring local and national thought leaders of the food community. \nThe Art of Food at the Parrish is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs\, with additional support from Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator. \nEXHIBITION SUPPORT \nThe Art of Food: From the Collections of Jordan D. SUMMARY:Members Tour | Across the Avenues: Fairfield Porter in New York
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nMembers are invited to a private gallery tour of Across the Avenues: Fairfield Porter in New York with Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator\, and curator of the exhibition. \nCome and engage in conversation with Kaitlin and other members of the Museum. This event takes place before the Museum opens. Coffee will be set up in the Café for guests following the tour. \nNote: Your membership must be active upon registration and on the date of the tour. \nAbout the Exhibition: Comprised of 27 paintings and prints\, Across the Avenues: Fairfield Porter in New York focuses on the cityscapes Porter created of Manhattan between the mid-1940s to mid-1970s. Drawn from the Museum’s vast Porter collection—consisting of over 240 works—Across the Avenues will include 23 paintings and four lithographic prints that illuminate the artist’s ability to capture New York City’s bustling energy\, both day and night. Highlighting different moments throughout the day\, Porter’s use of varied hues of blue\, red\, and yellow evoke the early\, hazy morning skies above the skyscrapers and the dark\, moody night atmospheres. \nAfter occasionally visiting New York during his college years\, Porter moved to the city in 1928 and lived on 15th Street while continuing his studies at the Art Students League for two years. After spending time in Europe\, he returned stateside in 1932 and married poet Anne Channing\, and they called New York City their home until 1936. During these four years\, Porter maintained a consistent subject matter of cityscapes in his works—specifically street scenes—which are on view in this permanent collection installation. After spending some years in his hometown Winnetka\, IL\, he returned to New York in 1943 and remained in the city until 1949 before moving to Southampton\, NY. Over the course of Porter’s career\, the city endured as one of his main inspirations\, in addition to his landscapes and portraits. \nThis group of cityscapes illustrate the artist’s commitment to representational art and his formal training. Porter had previously studied at Harvard University with Arthur Pope\, at Parsons School of Design with Jacques Maroger\, and at the Art Students League with Boardman Robinson and Thomas Hart Benton—all during a time when the focus in contemporary art was on abstraction. Despite being criticized by peers and art critics\, including famed Clement Greenberg\, Porter was unwavering in his devotion to a representational style of his own. This style is on full display with these works\, where he explores the city from multiple vantage points—with views from above looking through an apartment windowpane\, of the hurried sidewalks during the mid-afternoon rush\, and below the noisy avenues on subway platforms. \nNot a member but want to attend? SUMMARY:Members Tour | Beyond the Horizon
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nMembers are invited to a private gallery tour of Beyond the Horizon: Interpretations of the Landscape by Women in the Permanent Collection with Brianna L. Hernández\, Assistant Curator. \nCome and engage in conversation with Brianna and other members of the Museum. \nSpace is limited. Reservations are required. Please register early. If you can no longer attend\, please let us know as soon as possible so another member may join the tour. \nNote: This is a member only event and we cannot accommodate guests for this tour. Your membership must be active upon registration and on the date of the tour. \nAbout the Exhibition: Spanning mural-sized representational oil paintings\, expressionistic watercolors and pastel drawings\, and intimate mixed-media abstractions\, Beyond the Horizon will take viewers on a journey through visual styles and thematic experiences of the landscape. Featured women artists from the permanent collection capture the essence and tone of the environment through their own unique visual language. \nLarge-scale works by Renate Aller\, April Gornik\, and Jane Wilson will demonstrate how these women artists masterfully composed mural-sized works\, countering the common association of large-scale with the masculine. A selection of paintings by Jennifer Bartlett\, Nell Blaine\, Edith Prellwitz\, Susan Vecsey\, and Jane Wilson expand techniques to include expressionistic mark-making and atmospheric washes of color across meadows\, forests\, and mountain ranges. Collages\, relief works\, and textured surfaces by Darlene Charneco\, Sandi Haber Fifield\, Laurie Lambrecht\, and Michelle Stuart will celebrate abstraction and conceptual interpretations of the land and nature. Throughout the galleries\, visitors will be immersed in the landscape and experience how each artist transforms their view of the natural world. \nBeyond the Horizon: Interpretations of the Landscape from Women in the Permanent Collection is curated by Brianna L. Hernández\, Assistant Curator. \nNot a member but want to attend? Join today →

SUMMARY:Member Preview: Simón Vega\, Across the Avenues\, and Beyond the Horizon
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nMuseum members are invited to join us at the Parrish for an Exhibition Preview and reception for Simón Vega: Tropical Space Castaways\, Across the Avenues: Fairfield Porter in New York\, and Beyond the Horizon: Interpretations of the Landscape from Women in the Permanent Collection. \n11 AM to 1 PM: Gallery preview and reception\n12 PM: Talk with artist Simón Vega\, moderated by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education \nNot a Parrish member? Join today →\nSalvadoran artist Simón Vega creates drawings\, objects\, sculptural installations\, and happenings inspired by the self-made informal architecture\, local market stands\, and vendor carts found in the streets and beaches of Central America. With his work\, Vega examines the lasting effects of colonialism and the Cold War in Central America\, and parodies disparities between first and second-world cultures\, economies\, and social experiences. At the Parrish\, Vega will present Gemini Duplex Chanti Capsule\, Tropical Mercury Capsule\, crafted from repurposed roofing sheets\, toys\, and other objects\, and Tropical Spacesuits\, made of recycled Hawaiian shirts\, as well as a photography series documenting his largest sculpture to date\, Palm 3 World Station\, for greater context of his sculptures. The artist will also create a rover with found materials from the Museum’s surrounding area. \nSimón Vega: Tropical Space Castaways is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs and Martha Stotsky\, Deputy Director of Arts Education\, with additional support from Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator\, Brianna L. Hernández\, Assistant Curator\, and Casey Kleister Meyer\, Education Programs Manager. \nComprised of 27 paintings and prints\, Across the Avenues: Fairfield Porter in New York focuses on the cityscapes Porter created of Manhattan between the mid-1940s to mid-1970s. \nAcross the Avenues: Fairfield Porter in New York is curated by Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator. \nSpanning mural-sized representational oil paintings\, expressionistic watercolors and pastel drawings\, and intimate mixed-media abstractions\, Beyond the Horizon: Interpretations of the Landscape from Women in the Permanent Collection will take viewers on a journey through visual styles and thematic experiences of the landscape. Featured women artists from the permanent collection capture the essence and tone of the environment through their own unique visual language. \nBeyond the Horizon: Interpretations of the Landscape from Women in the Permanent Collection is curated by Brianna L. Hernández\, Assistant Curator. \nEXHIBITION SUPPORT \nSimón Vega: Tropical Space Castaways is generously supported by Mario Cader-Frech\, founder of Y.ES Contemporary\, whose mission is to create opportunities for outstanding Salvadoran contemporary artists to advance their artistic practice and engage with artists\, curators\, collectors\, gallerists\, and the media within and outside El Salvador. \nThe Parrish Art Museum’s programs are made possible\, in part\, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature\, and by the property taxpayers from the Southampton School District and the Tuckahoe Common School District.

SUMMARY:Private Tour at the Frick Madison
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nJoin Members at the Patron level and above for a private tour at the Frick Madison\, the temporary home of The Frick Collection. The tour will include highlights of their permanent collection and an introduction to their special exhibition\, Barkley L. Hendricks: Portraits at the Frick. Barkley L. Hendricks (1945—2017) revolutionized contemporary portraiture with his vivid depictions of Black subjects that emphasize the dignity and individuality of his sitters. Beginning in the late 1960s\, his work drew from the challenged traditions of European art\, and The Frick Collection—with its iconic portraits by Rembrandt\, Bronzino\, Van Dyck\, and others—was one of his favorite museums. \nMore about the Frick Madison: “The Frick has created a sequence of gallery spaces at Frick Madison that reflects the museum’s traditional emphasis on intimate encounters with both art and architecture and allows direct access to objects without the interference of vitrines or stanchions.” – frick.org \nThis special opportunity for Parrish Members to glean new perspectives on old masters takes place when the Frick Madison is closed to the public. Event is being co-organized by Parrish Member and supporter\, Bobbie Braun. You must be a current Patron level member or above to register. \nMembers may bring up to one guest provided space is still available. Space is limited.
