Join today → \n  \nAbout the Exhibition\nSean Scully: The Albee Barn\, Montauk is a survey of the artist’s work ranging from 1981 to 2024\, exploring his Long Island connection and how a single month spent in Montauk in the summer of 1982 with a fellowship at The Edward F. Albee Foundation became a pivotal place and moment in the artist’s career. \nThis exhibition recalls this transformative moment by bringing together 15 of the original 1982 Montauk paintings for the first time since their time in the Barn\, in the same geographic region near the site where they were inspired and produced 43 years ago. The exhibition includes over 70 works\, chosen in collaboration with the artist to highlight the works’ contextual site—landscape and light. \nSean Scully: The Albee Barn\, Montauk is organized by Mónica Ramírez-Montagut\, Ph.D.\, Executive Director\, with Kaitlin Halloran\, Associate Curator and Publications Manager. \nExhibition Support\nSean Scully: The Albee Barn\, Montauk is presented with the generous support of Northern Trust\, Kenneth C. Advanced registration is required and limited space is available. \nAbout The East End: In the Abstract at the Avram Gallery\nFor nearly a century\, Long Island’s East End has been a sanctuary tor abstract artists. From these shores they produced a new alphabet; symbols belonging to a universal language of line\, color\, shape\, and gesture. In 1944\, two of the leading figures within the Abstract Expressionist movement\, Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner\, traded their Manhattan apartment and loft studios tor a rustic farmhouse and barn studio in the Springs\, a rural hamlet of East Hampton. In the coming years\, throngs of abstract artists would relocate to Eastern Long Island or establish seasonal studios here. \nThe works featured in this exhibition\, highlights from the permanent collection of Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center\, celebrate some of the abstract artists who lived and worked on the East End. Not a Parrish member? Join today → \n  \nAbout the Exhibition\nShirin Neshat: Born of Fire marks the artist’s first museum exhibition in the New York area in over 20 years. The show offers a non-linear survey of Neshat’s artistic development\, presenting focused installations of four significant bodies of work. These range from her first major photographic works\, Women of Allah (1993–7)—images inspired by women’s involvement in the Islamic Revolution and Iran-Iraq War—to The Book of Kings (2012)\, a portrait series that calls on the tradition of Persian epic poetry to address the Arab Spring protest movement. The exhibition will also include more recent projects that present Neshat’s surreal film and video works alongside still photographs\, including Land of Dreams (2019)\, in which the artist turns her attention to exploring American culture from the perspective of an Iranian artist in exile\, and The Fury (2022–3)\, addressing sexual exploitation of female political prisoners. \nThough distinct\, all four bodies of work are connected by motifs of rebellion\, storytelling\, and human connection; presented together\, they reveal how these key themes have developed throughout Neshat’s artistic evolution. The exhibition also features a gallery dedicated to her private collection of work by fellow artists\, from friends such as Marina Abramović and Robert Longo to artists based in the Middle East. Join today → \nAbout Sean Scully\nSean Scully’s (Irish\, b. 1945) work is in the collection of virtually every major museum around the world. In 2014 he became the first Western artist to have a career-length retrospective in China. He was awarded the International Artist of the Year Prize in Hong Kong in 2018. His important solo exhibitions include Landline at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington\, D.C.\, which traveled to the Wadsworth Atheneum\, Hartford; Landline and Other Works\, De Pont Museum\, Tilburg\, Netherlands; Sea Star\, National Gallery\, London; the retrospective Vita Duplex\, Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe\, Germany; and a presentation of sculptures at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park\, England. Among other exhibitions are: Eleuthera\, new figurative paintings shown at the Albertina\, Vienna; the retrospective Long Light at the Villa e Collezione Panza\, Varese\, Italy; and Human\, paintings and sculptures presented at San Giorgio Maggiore for the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019. His first exhibition in central Europe\, Passenger\, at the Hungarian National Gallery\, Budapest\, traveled to the Benaki Museum\, Athens\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art\, Zagreb. \nA fifty-year career retrospective\, Sean Scully: The Shape of Ideas\, was organized and shown at the Philadelphia Museum of Art  and traveled to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth\, his exhibitions have included Material World\, Thorvaldsens Museum\, Copenhagen; Painting and Sculpture\, Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej\, Toruń\, Poland; Song of Color\, Langen Foundation\, Neuss\, Germany; and A Wound in a Dance with Love\, Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna. Limited spaces will be available at the door. \nAbout the Exhibition\nA New Subjectivity 1979/2024 looks back at the momentous exhibition Nouvelle Subjectivité (A New Subjectivity) organized by the essayist and art historian Jean Clair in Brussels at the Palais des Beaux Arts in 1979. The exhibition at the Parrish pays tribute to the original exhibition by presenting a selection of works from several of the artists included in the original exhibition—Robert Guinan\, David Hockney\, Raymond Mason\, Philippe Roman\, and Sam Szafran as well as R.B. Kitaj from the Parrish’s collection—and works by artists whose work has continued the figurative traditions celebrated in Nouvelle Subjectivité\, some also drawn from the collection of the Parrish\, such as Rackstraw Downes\, Jane Freilicher\, and Howard Kanovitz\, and artists working today not in the collection\, such as Martí Cormand\, Jordan Casteel\, Peter Doig\, Jenna Gribbon\, and Arcmanoro Niles.

Join today → \n  \nAbout the Exhibitions\nCharlotte Park: The Life of Forms in Color is a survey comprising more than 70 paintings and works on paper\, drawn exclusively from the 2017 gift of works to the Parrish by the James and Charlotte Brooks Foundation. Overshadowed by the attention given to the work of her husband\, James Brooks\, Park kept a fairly low profile over the course of her career while painting some of the strongest and most brilliantly colored canvases of her time. Color and form\, often related to the living environment surrounding the studio she shared with her husband\, were strong and constant forces in her work. \nRalph Gibson—Nature : Object will feature a selection of photographs by Ralph Gibson from a series based on the relationship between shapes found in nature and human constructs; positing that nature is visually evident in all genres of industrial design\, and architecture is evoked in the correlation between form and ergonomic function. In this exhibition\, Gibson highlights the relationship between perspective\, color\, and proportion. Please call if you would like to bring guests. \nAbout the Artist\nJennifer de Klaver is a painter based in Southampton\, New York\, whose abstract works merge gestural forms with a profound sense of calm and inevitability. “I am inspired by color\, sound\, and movement\,” she explains. “My art flows from the heart\, guided by intuition.” This intuitive process infuses her paintings with a deep connection to the soul\, evident in the emotive textures\, marks\, and meditative energy that characterize her work. \nde Klaver’s art delves into the most intimate connections to source. Through a hybrid form of abstract expressionism\, she plays with contrast\, color\, connectivity\, and a language tied to light—all inspired by the beauty of nature. \nGrowing up in Belgium\, de Klaver’s appreciation for the arts began early. As the daughter of a painter\, she traveled extensively throughout Europe\, immersing herself in the works of the great masters in Paris\, Rome\, Florence\, Barcelona\, and the Netherlands. At 12 PM\, join us for an introductory talk between Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator of Art and Education\, and the artists. Join today →\n  \nCelebrated for his bright\, bold\, and colorful paintings\, Eddie Martinez will present a new body of work made specifically for the Parrish. Taking full advantage of the Museum’s expansive space and high ceilings\, Martinez is creating seven 12-foot tall Bufly paintings. Like much of his work\, these canvases are imbued with a personal iconography. The artist started the Bufly series in 2021 when his son Arthur who was two at the time became fascinated with butterflies\, mispronouncing them as “buflies.” Martinez has been painting them ever since. \nEddie Martinez: Buflies is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs\, with additional support from Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator. \nFollowing on the heels of the publication of her first career-spanning monograph\, Sam Moyer’s solo exhibition at the Parrish Art Museum will showcase the artist’s relationship to material and light as a throughline in her practice\, displaying the range of her processes\, and bodies of work\, across three galleries. Focusing each space on a specific material relationship\, Moyer presents a large-scale stone painting tailor-fit to the architecture of the room\, sculptural photographs whose composition are specific to the landscape of Eastern Long Island\, and a series of smaller\, more representational wall works. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nParrish Contemporaries Circle members are invited to help kick off the summer with a toast at Elena Frampton’s Bridgehampton gallery\, Exhibition The Barn. Currently on view\, is Janelle Lynch: Endless Forms Most Beautiful\, a collaboration between Frampton Co. with London and Hong Kong-based Flowers Gallery. This exhibition of works made by Janelle Lynch in Amagansett\, New York\, during 2022–2023\, will include cyanotypes\, a camera-less 19th century photographic process\, of botanical and wildlife remains and Lynch’s own body through which she affirms the fundamental value of all life in its various manifestations\, including the afterlife. The unique works are evidence of physical existence and\, as abstractions in hues of blue and white\, also suggest the ethereal world. Remarks by the artist will take place at 6 PM. \nAbout Exhibition\nA stone’s throw from the ocean\, Exhibition The Barn is situated in the serene hamlet of Bridgehampton in Long Island\, New York. Carmen Herrera: Estructuras Monumentales features four large-scale sculptures in red\, blue\, yellow\, and green in the Museum’s South Meadow. Cuba\, 1915–2022) is known for her hard-edge paintings\, prints\, and sculptures—often representing geometric shapes with both symmetrical and asymmetrical abstractions. The four works installed in the Meadow\, Angulo Azul (2017)\, Angulo Amarillo (2017)\, Estructura Verde (1966/2018)\, and Gemini (Red) (1971/2019) are part of Herrera’s series Estructuras\, which she initially envisioned as sketches and paintings in the 1960s. In 1971\, Herrera fabricated four Estructuras in wood—three wall-based works and one free-standing. However\, it was only in the final fifteen years of the artist’s life that she was able to realize her vision for these monumental sculptures on a larger scale. The works in this series are inspired by and emanate from the artist’s vivid memories of his treacherous journey through the desert as a 16-year-old youth escaping the vio­lence of then war-torn El Salvador in the hopes of finding safe haven in the United States. \nDede Gotthelf purchased the Southampton Inn and other development properties in the town after a highly successful career in banking\, brokerage\, and government. Dede is active on several local boards and advisory committees; was recognized as one of the Top 100 Real Estate Women of the 21st Century by AREW; awarded New York State Women of Distinction (New York State); Certificate of Special Achievement for urban planning by the New Your State governor. Dede is an honors graduate from Williams College\, the Bearley School\, and holds a sailing captain’s license. With a dedicated and experienced day-to-day management team at the Inn\, Dede is focused on her passion to make the East End a sustainable year-round community through staff housing and tourism while maintaining the culture and beauty of our community. \nJolie Parcher is the Founder and Director of Mandala Yoga Center for Healing Arts and has been a certified yoga teacher from The Patanjali Yoga Center in Kathmandu\, Nepal since 1990. Jolie is certified as an Ayurvedic Diet and Lifestyle Practitioner from the Kripalu School of Ayurveda and is trained as a practitioner of the Ayurvedic hands on Treatments as well as an Aromatherapist. \nJohn J. Leonard\, of The Law Office of John J. Join today →\nThe Art of Food focuses on food as an essential cultural component that builds communities and fortifies human relationships. More than one hundred drawings\, paintings\, photographs\, sculptures\, and ceramics by thirty-seven artists from the Jordan Schnitzer Foundation will be exhibited. Among these are major postwar figures such as David Hockney\, Jasper Johns\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Ed Ruscha\, and Andy Warhol; contemporary artists including Enrique Chagoya\, Jenny Holzer\, Alison Saar\, Lorna Simpson\, and Rachel Whiteread; and artists with deep roots in the East End of Long Island\, including Robert Gober\, Roy Lichtenstein\, and Donald Sultan. The exhibition is organized by the University of Arizona Museum of Art and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation. \nThe exhibition relates to the East End of Long Island’s distinguished history as one of the most important fishing and agricultural regions in New York State. The area was developed into agricultural land by the 1640s\, and by the 1820s as many as 95 percent of the residents lived on farms. While Greenport and Sag Harbor were ports for trade and whaling\, Peconic Bay was known for its fish and shellfish. Today\, the East End remains an agricultural center\, producing more than one hundred different crops\, and an increasingly prominent wine region with more than sixty vineyards. \nIn conjunction with the exhibition and in celebration of the region’s agricultural history\, special food events will be organized in partnership with the James Beard Foundation\, local farmers\, and food organizations\, and will entail educational programming\, workshops\, and conversations featuring local and national thought leaders of the food community. \nThe Art of Food at the Parrish is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs\, with additional support from Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator. \nEXHIBITION SUPPORT \nThe Art of Food: From the Collections of Jordan D. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nMembers are invited to a private gallery tour of Across the Avenues: Fairfield Porter in New York with Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator\, and curator of the exhibition. \nCome and engage in conversation with Kaitlin and other members of the Museum. This event takes place before the Museum opens. Coffee will be set up in the Café for guests following the tour. \nNote: Your membership must be active upon registration and on the date of the tour. \nAbout the Exhibition: Comprised of 27 paintings and prints\, Across the Avenues: Fairfield Porter in New York focuses on the cityscapes Porter created of Manhattan between the mid-1940s to mid-1970s. Drawn from the Museum’s vast Porter collection—consisting of over 240 works—Across the Avenues will include 23 paintings and four lithographic prints that illuminate the artist’s ability to capture New York City’s bustling energy\, both day and night. Highlighting different moments throughout the day\, Porter’s use of varied hues of blue\, red\, and yellow evoke the early\, hazy morning skies above the skyscrapers and the dark\, moody night atmospheres. \nAfter occasionally visiting New York during his college years\, Porter moved to the city in 1928 and lived on 15th Street while continuing his studies at the Art Students League for two years. After spending time in Europe\, he returned stateside in 1932 and married poet Anne Channing\, and they called New York City their home until 1936. During these four years\, Porter maintained a consistent subject matter of cityscapes in his works—specifically street scenes—which are on view in this permanent collection installation. After spending some years in his hometown Winnetka\, IL\, he returned to New York in 1943 and remained in the city until 1949 before moving to Southampton\, NY. Over the course of Porter’s career\, the city endured as one of his main inspirations\, in addition to his landscapes and portraits. \nThis group of cityscapes illustrate the artist’s commitment to representational art and his formal training. Porter had previously studied at Harvard University with Arthur Pope\, at Parsons School of Design with Jacques Maroger\, and at the Art Students League with Boardman Robinson and Thomas Hart Benton—all during a time when the focus in contemporary art was on abstraction. Despite being criticized by peers and art critics\, including famed Clement Greenberg\, Porter was unwavering in his devotion to a representational style of his own. This style is on full display with these works\, where he explores the city from multiple vantage points—with views from above looking through an apartment windowpane\, of the hurried sidewalks during the mid-afternoon rush\, and below the noisy avenues on subway platforms. \nNot a member but want to attend?
