Not a Parrish member? Join today → \n  \nAbout the Exhibition\nThe Parrish Art Museum will present Nina Yankowitz: In the Out/Out the In\, the first retrospective of Nina Yankowitz (American\, b. 1946)\, whose six-decade career has continually expanded the boundaries of painting\, sculpture\, sound\, video\, and installation. Yankowitz came to prominence in the 1960s in New York\, where she experimented with the material and technical possibilities of canvas\, cardboard\, paint sprayers\, and sewing equipment to create abstract paintings. A founding member of the Heresies Collective (1976–1993)\, Yankowitz’s early approach to painting was informed by the feminist movement\, Process art\, and the legacy of Abstract Expressionism. She also participated in the countercultural scenes of Greenwich Village and upstate New York\, and her collaborations with the experimental Group 212 Inter-Media Project encouraged her interest in performance and new media. In the following decades\, her practice branched out into sculpture\, sound and video art\, and interactive installations that harness the technology behind social media platforms and video games. \nNina Yankowitz: In the Out/Out the In is organized by the Museum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\, FL. The presentation at the Parrish is organized by Corinne Erni\, The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator of Art and Education\, with Scout Hutchinson\, The FLAG Art Foundation Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Parrish Art Museum. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue published by the Museum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\, FL\, with contributions from Glenn Adamson\, Corinne Erni\, Barbara London\, and Katherine Pill\, who curated the exhibition at MFA St. Petersburg. \nExhibition Support\nThe presentation of Nina Yankowitz: In the Out/Out the In at the Parrish Art Museum is made possible thanks to the generous support of Eric Firestone Gallery; Helen Frankenthaler Foundation; Sherri and Darren Cohen; County of Suffolk; Stephanie Neville and Alan Beller; Sandy and Stephen Perlbinder; Wolf Kahn Foundation; Jane Wesman and Donald Savelson; The Evelyn Toll Family Foundation; and René and Marie-France Kern. \n \nThe Parrish Art Museum’s programs are made possible\, in part\, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature\, and by the property taxpayers from the Southampton School District and the Tuckahoe Common School District.

Not a Parrish member? Join today → \n  \nAbout Endless Limits: The Work of James Howell\, 1962–2014\nThe Parrish Art Museum will present an exhibition of the work of James Howell (American\, 1935–2014)\, an artist known for his minimalist paintings that explore the vast tonal range of the color gray. Over the course of his fifty-year career\, he produced paintings\, prints\, and drawings that explore the subtlety and scope of the neutral shade\, as well as its relationship to light and perception of space. This will be the first exhibition of Howell’s work on Long Island\, a place that deeply impacted the artist’s later career. Between 2006 and his death\, Howell worked out of his studio in Montauk\, where the everchanging nature of the elements—fog\, water\, and light—provided fresh inspiration for his decades-long fascination with the seemingly infinite array of grays. \nEndless Limits: The Work of James Howell\, 1962–2014 will be accompanied by a fully illustrated exhibition catalogue published by Hatje Cantz. The publication will provide insight into the artist’s meticulous working methods and his relationship to the East End. \nEndless Limits: The Work of James Howell\, 1962–2014 is co-organized by Kaitlin Halloran\, Associate Curator and Publications Manager\, and Scout Hutchinson\, Associate Curator of Exhibitions. \nExhibition Support\nEndless Limits: The Work of James Howell\, 1962–2014 is made possible\, in part\, thanks to the generous support of the James Howell Foundation and the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation. \n \nAbout Time Exposed: Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Seascapes\nTime Exposed: Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Seascapes presents the decade-long project of the well-known photographer\, Hiroshi Sugimoto (Japanese\, b. 1948) for the first time at the Parrish Art Museum. Acquired by the Museum in 2022\, the photolithograph series explores Sugimoto’s unwavering interest in the incremental atmospheric changes around vast bodies of water. Beginning in 1980\, Sugimoto traveled to remote corners of the world to capture the variable moments where the sky meets the sea—a place of mystery that still intrigues the artist so many years later. \nTime Exposed: Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Seascapes is organized by Kaitlin Halloran\, Associate Curator and Publications Manager. \nExhibition Support\nTime Exposed: Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Seascapes is made possible\, in part\, thanks to the generous support of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation and the Japan Foundation\, New York. \n \n  \nThe Parrish Art Museum’s programs are made possible\, in part\, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature\, and by the property taxpayers from the Southampton School District and the Tuckahoe Common School District.

SUMMARY:Member Preview | Sean Scully: The Albee Barn\, Montauk
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n6:30–8 PM | Exhibition preview\n7–8 PM | Talk with artist Sean Scully and Executive Director Mónica Ramírez-Montagut \nMuseum Members are invited to an exhibition preview of Sean Scully: The Albee Barn\, Montauk. Experience the exhibition before it opens on May 11. At 7 PM\, join us in the Lichtenstein Theater for a conversation between exhibiting artist Sean Scully and Executive Director Mónica Ramírez-Montagut\, Ph.D.\, curator of the exhibition. \nAdvanced registration is required. Not a Parrish member? Join today → \n  \nAbout the Exhibition\nSean Scully: The Albee Barn\, Montauk is a survey of the artist’s work ranging from 1981 to 2024\, exploring his Long Island connection and how a single month spent in Montauk in the summer of 1982 with a fellowship at The Edward F. Albee Foundation became a pivotal place and moment in the artist’s career. \nThis exhibition recalls this transformative moment by bringing together 15 of the original 1982 Montauk paintings for the first time since their time in the Barn\, in the same geographic region near the site where they were inspired and produced 43 years ago. The exhibition includes over 70 works\, chosen in collaboration with the artist to highlight the works’ contextual site—landscape and light. \nSean Scully: The Albee Barn\, Montauk is organized by Mónica Ramírez-Montagut\, Ph.D.\, Executive Director\, with Kaitlin Halloran\, Associate Curator and Publications Manager. \nExhibition Support\nSean Scully: The Albee Barn\, Montauk is presented with the generous support of Northern Trust\, Kenneth C. Griffin\, and Fiona & Eric Rudin. SUMMARY:Parrish X Avram Gallery Southampton Tour
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER  JOIN TODAY\nJoin Parrish Contemporary Circle Members for an exclusive tour of the Avram Gallery at Stony Brook Southampton with Parrish Collection artist Susan Vecsey. The event includes a light reception. \nThis event is for Contemporary Circle level Members of the Parrish Art Museum. Advanced registration is required and limited space is available. \nAbout The East End: In the Abstract at the Avram Gallery\nFor nearly a century\, Long Island’s East End has been a sanctuary tor abstract artists. From these shores they produced a new alphabet; symbols belonging to a universal language of line\, color\, shape\, and gesture. In 1944\, two of the leading figures within the Abstract Expressionist movement\, Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner\, traded their Manhattan apartment and loft studios tor a rustic farmhouse and barn studio in the Springs\, a rural hamlet of East Hampton. In the coming years\, throngs of abstract artists would relocate to Eastern Long Island or establish seasonal studios here. \nThe works featured in this exhibition\, highlights from the permanent collection of Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center\, celebrate some of the abstract artists who lived and worked on the East End. SUMMARY:Member Preview | Shirin Neshat: Born of Fire
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n6:30–8 PM | Exhibition preview\n7–8 PM | Talk with artist Shirin Neshat and Chief Curator Corinne Erni \nMuseum Members are invited to an exhibition preview of Shirin Neshat: Born of Fire. Experience the exhibition before it opens on April 20. At 7 PM\, join us in the Lichtenstein Theater for a conversation between exhibiting artist Shirin Neshat and Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator of Art and Education\, who organized the exhibition. \nAdvanced registration is required. Not a Parrish member? Join today → \n  \nAbout the Exhibition\nShirin Neshat: Born of Fire marks the artist’s first museum exhibition in the New York area in over 20 years. The show offers a non-linear survey of Neshat’s artistic development\, presenting focused installations of four significant bodies of work. These range from her first major photographic works\, Women of Allah (1993–7)—images inspired by women’s involvement in the Islamic Revolution and Iran-Iraq War—to The Book of Kings (2012)\, a portrait series that calls on the tradition of Persian epic poetry to address the Arab Spring protest movement. The exhibition will also include more recent projects that present Neshat’s surreal film and video works alongside still photographs\, including Land of Dreams (2019)\, in which the artist turns her attention to exploring American culture from the perspective of an Iranian artist in exile\, and The Fury (2022–3)\, addressing sexual exploitation of female political prisoners. \nThough distinct\, all four bodies of work are connected by motifs of rebellion\, storytelling\, and human connection; presented together\, they reveal how these key themes have developed throughout Neshat’s artistic evolution. The exhibition also features a gallery dedicated to her private collection of work by fellow artists\, from friends such as Marina Abramović and Robert Longo to artists based in the Middle East. This installation reveals Neshat’s influences as well as her championship of lesser-known peers\, especially from cultures where censorship impedes free expression. \nShirin Neshat: Born of Fire is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education\, with Scout Hutchinson\, Associate Curator of Exhibitions. \nExhibition Support\nLead sponsorship for Shirin Neshat: Born of Fire is provided by Veronica Beard\, Agnes Gund\, and the Robert Lehman Foundation. \n \nWe are grateful for the support of Jacqueline Brody; Alaleh Khatibi and Ariel Ostad; Sandy and Stephen Perlbinder; Sarika Singh and Vivek Bantwal\, Goldman Sachs Gives; Fern and Lenard Tessler; Neda Young and Family; Susan and Frank Dunlevy; Yanina Fuertes; Amy and Steven Horowitz; Monika and Deven Parekh; Alexandra Stanton and Sam Natapoff; George Wells and Manfred Rantner; Barbara Hoffman; Nina Yankowitz and Barry Holden; Gladstone Gallery; and Ellen Kern. \nWe are also grateful to Bri-Tech\, Inc. and The Carpetman for their in-kind support. \nThe Parrish Art Museum’s programs are made possible\, in part\, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature\, and by the property taxpayers from the Southampton School District and the Tuckahoe Common School District.

DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nMembers at the Parrish Contemporaries Circle level and above are invited to join us for a Curator-led tour of A New Subjectivity 1979/2024. Tour is limited to a group of 20. Advanced registration is recommended. Limited spaces will be available at the door. \nAbout the Exhibition\nA New Subjectivity 1979/2024 looks back at the momentous exhibition Nouvelle Subjectivité (A New Subjectivity) organized by the essayist and art historian Jean Clair in Brussels at the Palais des Beaux Arts in 1979. The exhibition at the Parrish pays tribute to the original exhibition by presenting a selection of works from several of the artists included in the original exhibition—Robert Guinan\, David Hockney\, Raymond Mason\, Philippe Roman\, and Sam Szafran as well as R.B. Kitaj from the Parrish’s collection—and works by artists whose work has continued the figurative traditions celebrated in Nouvelle Subjectivité\, some also drawn from the collection of the Parrish\, such as Rackstraw Downes\, Jane Freilicher\, and Howard Kanovitz\, and artists working today not in the collection\, such as Martí Cormand\, Jordan Casteel\, Peter Doig\, Jenna Gribbon\, and Arcmanoro Niles.

SUMMARY:Member Preview | Charlotte Park: The Life of Forms in Color & Ralph Gibson—Nature : Object
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n11 AM | Reception\n12 PM | Talk with artist Ralph Gibson \nMuseum Members are invited to an exhibition preview and reception celebrating the opening of Charlotte Park: The Life of Forms in Color and Ralph Gibson—Nature : Object. At 12 PM\, join artist Ralph Gibson for a talk. \nRalph Gibson. Photo: Bob Tursack\, 2022. \nAdvanced registration is required. Not a Parrish member? Join today → \n  \nAbout the Exhibitions\nCharlotte Park: The Life of Forms in Color is a survey comprising more than 70 paintings and works on paper\, drawn exclusively from the 2017 gift of works to the Parrish by the James and Charlotte Brooks Foundation. Overshadowed by the attention given to the work of her husband\, James Brooks\, Park kept a fairly low profile over the course of her career while painting some of the strongest and most brilliantly colored canvases of her time. Color and form\, often related to the living environment surrounding the studio she shared with her husband\, were strong and constant forces in her work. \nRalph Gibson—Nature : Object will feature a selection of photographs by Ralph Gibson from a series based on the relationship between shapes found in nature and human constructs; positing that nature is visually evident in all genres of industrial design\, and architecture is evoked in the correlation between form and ergonomic function. In this exhibition\, Gibson highlights the relationship between perspective\, color\, and proportion. The 35mm Leica format and optical glass are an essential component of the work\, and the dimensions of the frame are based on the ancient Greek “Golden Means.” \n  \nExhibition Support\nCharlotte Park: The Life of Forms in Color is made possible thanks to the generous support of the James and Charlotte Brooks Fund. \nRalph Gibson—Nature : Object is made possible\, in part\, thanks to the generous support of Leica Camera USA and Neda Young and Family. \n \nThe Parrish Art Museum’s programs are made possible\, in part\, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature\, and by the property taxpayers from the Southampton School District and the Tuckahoe Common School District.

SUMMARY:Studio Visit | Jennifer de Klaver
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nWe invite our Patron-level members and above to a private\, behind-the-scenes studio visit with artist Jennifer de Klaver in Southampton. This exclusive event offers a rare opportunity to explore de Klaver’s creative space and process up close and gain insight into how her work intertwines with nature and storytelling. Engage in an enriching conversation with the artist and fellow art enthusiasts while enjoying wine and light bites. Don’t miss this unique chance to connect with the artist and fellow patrons in an intimate and inspiring setting. \nRegistration is required. Limited space is available. \nThis event is intended for Members of the Parrish Art Museum at the Patron level and above. Please call if you would like to bring guests. \nAbout the Artist\nJennifer de Klaver is a painter based in Southampton\, New York\, whose abstract works merge gestural forms with a profound sense of calm and inevitability. “I am inspired by color\, sound\, and movement\,” she explains. “My art flows from the heart\, guided by intuition.” This intuitive process infuses her paintings with a deep connection to the soul\, evident in the emotive textures\, marks\, and meditative energy that characterize her work. \nde Klaver’s art delves into the most intimate connections to source. Through a hybrid form of abstract expressionism\, she plays with contrast\, color\, connectivity\, and a language tied to light—all inspired by the beauty of nature. \nGrowing up in Belgium\, de Klaver’s appreciation for the arts began early. As the daughter of a painter\, she traveled extensively throughout Europe\, immersing herself in the works of the great masters in Paris\, Rome\, Florence\, Barcelona\, and the Netherlands. For de Klaver\, painting is a form of meditation\, healing\, and inner storytelling—a process vividly expressed through the dynamic movements and calligraphic forms in her work. \nCurrently\, de Klaver paints out of a former commercial garage in Southampton\, New York. Her work has been featured in exhibitions in New York City and Southampton\, Art Market + Design Hamptons\, Hampton Holiday House + Designer Showhouse\, and Sotheby’s. She is currently exhibiting at Art D’Avendano (division of Jeff Lincoln Art + Design) at 200 North See\, Southampton through September 29th. \n

SUMMARY:Member Preview | Eddie Martinez: Buflies and Sam Moyer: Ferns Teeth
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n11 AM | Reception\n12 PM | Introductory talk with Chief Curator Corinne Erni and the artists \nMuseum Members are invited to celebrate the opening of Eddie Martinez: Buflies and Sam Moyer: Ferns Teeth. At 12 PM\, join us for an introductory talk between Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator of Art and Education\, and the artists. Advanced registration is required. \nNot a Parrish member? Join today →\n  \nCelebrated for his bright\, bold\, and colorful paintings\, Eddie Martinez will present a new body of work made specifically for the Parrish. Taking full advantage of the Museum’s expansive space and high ceilings\, Martinez is creating seven 12-foot tall Bufly paintings. Like much of his work\, these canvases are imbued with a personal iconography. The artist started the Bufly series in 2021 when his son Arthur who was two at the time became fascinated with butterflies\, mispronouncing them as “buflies.” Martinez has been painting them ever since. \nEddie Martinez: Buflies is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs\, with additional support from Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator. \nFollowing on the heels of the publication of her first career-spanning monograph\, Sam Moyer’s solo exhibition at the Parrish Art Museum will showcase the artist’s relationship to material and light as a throughline in her practice\, displaying the range of her processes\, and bodies of work\, across three galleries. Focusing each space on a specific material relationship\, Moyer presents a large-scale stone painting tailor-fit to the architecture of the room\, sculptural photographs whose composition are specific to the landscape of Eastern Long Island\, and a series of smaller\, more representational wall works. Consistent with Moyer’s habit of manifesting a directly tactile experience with the visual materials at hand\, two of the three galleries will be outfitted with artist-made marble benches and visitors will be able to play on hand-cast concrete backgammon boards in the Museum’s lobby. \nSam Moyer: Ferns Teeth is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs\, with additional support from Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator. \nExhibition Support\nEddie Martinez: Buflies is made possible\, in part\, thanks to the generous support of The Evelyn Toll Family Foundation\, Yanina Fuertes\, and a donor who wishes to remain Anonymous. \nSam Moyer: Ferns Teeth is made possible\, in part\, thanks to the generous support of Jacqueline Brody; The Deborah Buck Foundation; Linda Hackett and Melinda Hackett/ CAL Foundation; Sean Kelly\, New York/Los Angeles; BLUM; The Evelyn Toll Family Foundation; Herman Goldman Foundation; Lauren and Steven P. Schwartz; Yanina Fuertes; Allison and Donald Weiss; Karen and Dennis Mehiel; and a donor who wishes to remain Anonymous. \nThe Parrish Art Museum’s programs are made possible\, in part\, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature\, and by the property taxpayers from the Southampton School District and the Tuckahoe Common School District.
