Biggers (b. 1970\, Los Angeles\, CA) draws on a diverse range of influences\, from Buddhism and Los Angeles graffiti culture to Gee’s Bend quilts and his own collection of African sculpture. Running throughout the exhibition is the cloud motif\, a symbol that has engaged the artist for decades. Beginning with Biggers’ monumental ceiling installation Unsui (Cloud Forest) (2025); the exhibition traces the cloud theme through his Codex series—sculptures and paintings made from repurposed antique quilts; a floor-based sand installation inspired by prayer rugs\, breakdance floors\, and Japanese Buddhist mandalas; and Mirror\, a marble sculpture from his ongoing Chimera series\, which blends elements of African masks and Greco-Roman statuary. \n \nSanford Biggers: Drift is part of the Museum’s USA250: Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness\, a year-long program organized in response to the United States’ semiquincentennial in 2026. Through this exhibition\, Biggers explores the theme of “Pursuit of Happiness.” \nSanford Biggers: Drift is co-organized by Corinne Erni\, The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator of Art and Education\, and Scout Hutchinson\, The FLAG Art Foundation Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Parrish. \nExhibition Support\nSanford Biggers: Drift is made possible\, in part\, thanks to the generous support of Rashid Johnson; The Coby Foundation\, LTD; Robert Lehman Foundation; Sarah Arison; Amy and Steven Horowitz; Sarika Singh and Vivek Bantwal\, Goldman Sachs Gives; George Wells and Manfred Rantner; Susan and Frank Dunlevy; Stacey and Rob Goergen; Miyoung Lee & Neil Simpkins; The Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family; Aima Raza and Agha Khan; Beth Redmond; Robin and Frederic Seegal; Kathleen Tait; Jane Wesman and Donald Savelson; Martha McLanahan; Suzi and David Cordish; Stephanie Horton; and Marjorie and Michael Levine. \nWe are also grateful for the in-kind support provided by Marianne Boesky Gallery\, New York\, and David Castillo Gallery\, Miami. \nThe Parrish Art Museum’s programs are made possible\, in part\, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature\, and by the property taxpayers from the Southampton Union Free School District and the Tuckahoe Common School District.

SUMMARY:Member Opening | Abstract Expressionism: The East End\, 1940 to Today
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n5:30–7 PM | Reception and Exhibition Viewing\n6 PM | Remarks by Kaitlin Halloran\, Associate Curator and Publications Manager \nMuseum Members are invited to celebrate the opening of Abstract Expressionism: The East End\, 1940 to Today\, a group exhibition that examines how the Abstract Expressionist movement flourished and evolved on the East End\, highlighting the many voices who contributed to the genre and influenced the styles that followed. \nAdvance registration is required. Not a Parrish member? Join today → \n  \nAbout the Exhibition\nFor centuries\, Long Island’s East End has been a hub of artistic innovation and cultural exchange\, where artists have found inspiration in the region’s landscape and thriving arts community. Abstract Expressionism\, while a movement established and developed in New York\, had immeasurable significance on the East End of Long Island—taking shape in the summer of 1945 with Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner establishing their home and studios in Springs\, NY. Abstract Expressionism: The East End\, 1940 to Today examines how the Abstract Expressionist movement flourished and evolved on the East End\, highlighting the many voices who contributed to the genre and influenced the styles that followed\, including Mary Abbott\, Marina Adams\, James Brooks\, Elaine de Kooning\, Willem de Kooning\, Perle Fine\, Helen Frankenthaler\, Mary Heilmann\, Lee Krasner\, Claude Lawrence\, Suzanne McClelland\, Betty Parsons\, Joanna Pousette-Dart\, Pat Steir\, Esteban Vicente\, Stanley Whitney\, and Frank Wimberley\, among others. \n \nAbstract Expressionism: The East End\, 1940 to Today is part of the Museum’s USA250: Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness\, a year-long program organized in response to the United States’ semiquincentennial in 2026. The USA250 exhibition series will reflect on the nation’s history and founding values\, examine our present moment\, and imagine new ways of moving forward\, while recognizing the contributions of regional artists to the broader landscape of American art and culture. Responding to language in the Declaration of Independence that states “liberty” as one of the inalienable rights\, Abstract Expressionism: The East End\, 1940 to Today recognizes the contributions of regional artists to the broader landscape of American art and culture while pursuing their own freedom of expression. \nAbstract Expressionism: The East End\, 1940 to Today is organized by Kaitlin Halloran\, Associate Curator and Publications Manager. \nExhibition Support\nAbstract Expressionism: The East End\, 1940 to Today is made possible thanks to leadership support from Kenneth C. Griffin and Griffin Catalyst and the generous support of Sherri and Darren Cohen; Ellen Katz; the National Endowment for the Arts; Berry Campbell Gallery\, New York; Evanne & Edward Gargiulo; Helen Frankenthaler Foundation; Amy and Steven Horowitz; Wolf Kahn Foundation; Lauren and Steven P. Schwartz; IFPDA Foundation; Suzi and David Cordish; and Fred Schmeltzer. \n\n\n \nThe Parrish Art Museum’s programs are made possible\, in part\, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature\, and by the property taxpayers from the Southampton Union Free School District and the Tuckahoe Common School District.
