SUMMARY:Talk | Alicia G. Longwell on the Parrish at 125 Years
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n$5 Members | $16 Adults (Nonmembers) | $12 Seniors | Free for Students\, Children \nAs the Parrish celebrates its landmark anniversary\, the Museum presents the first of a series of lectures and conversations that delve into its rich and storied history. In 1952\, Rebecca Bolling Littlejohn assumed the presidency of the Parrish’s Board of Trustees and began a crusade that would rename\, rebrand\, and revive the waning institution and bring it into the 20th Century\, including the acquisition of the first William Merritt Chase paintings and also works by contemporary East End artists Fairfield Porter\, Larry Rivers\, and John D. Graham. Join Chief Curator Emeritus\, Alicia G. Longwell\, for a reflection on this remarkable innovator while recalling her own four-decade career at the Museum—so often inspired by Mrs. Littlejohn’s stirring legacy. \nLongwell served as the Parrish Art Museum’s Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education for over three decades until her retirement in October 2022. She received her Ph.D. from the Graduate Center\, City University of New York\, where her dissertation topic was John Graham. Throughout her tenure\, she was integral in building the Museum’s collection through identifying and pursuing acquisitions\, including major works by Ross Bleckner\, Mary Heilmann\, Lonnie Holley\, Elizabeth Peyton\, David Salle\, Alan Shields\, and Joe Zucker. \nAmong her most notable curatorial achievements are Sand: Memory\, Meaning and Metaphor (2008)\, John Graham: Maverick Modernist (2017)\, and Affinities for Abstraction: Women Artists on Eastern Long Island\, 1950-2020 (2021). Longwell ushered the Museum into its new building in Water Mill\, planning the inaugural installations of the Parrish collection for the 2012 opening that featured the exhibition Malcolm Morley: Painting\, Paper\, Process (2012). She has organized numerous survey exhibitions including Dorothea Rockburne: In My Mind’s Eye (2011) and North Fork/South Fork: East End Art Now (2004)\, as well as solo exhibitions on the work of artists Barbara Bloom\, Marsden Hartley\, Frederick Kiesler\, Alan Shields\, Esteban Vicente\, and Jack Youngerman\, among many others. \nFriday Night Programming is made possible\, in part\, by Weill-Cornell Medicine – Southampton and The Corcoran Group.

SUMMARY:Listen | Alexandria Le\, Solo Piano
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$25 Members | $35 Adults (Nonmembers) | $20 for Students\, Children \nJoin us for a special Salon Series concert featuring soloist Alexandria Le\, laureate of the Pro Musicis International Award and the Ackerman Chamber Music Competition. In 2012\, Le won a coveted fellowship position with Ensemble Connect (formerly Ensemble ACJW\, the Academy of Carnegie Hall and the Juilliard School and the Weill Institute of Music) and has performed regularly at Carnegie Hall\, the Juilliard School\, and other venues around New York City. \nAmong the many selections in her Salon Series program\, Le’s dynamic pairings of American and non-American musical works will include two works that combine classical and pop music genres. French composer Francis Poulenc’s florid\, lyrical Improvisation no. 15: Hommage à Édith Piaf—the quintessential French chanteuse—is coupled with a piano arrangement of George Gershwin’s distinctly American Rhapsody in Blue that combines elements of classical and jazz\, established with the iconic opening siren-like clarinet riff and continuing with sections that evoke the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple in the 1920s. Her program also includes Claude Debussy’s Clair de Lune\, a hallmark of French Impressionism\, paired with Summerland from the 1935 suite Three Visions by William Grant Still\, often referred to as the “Dean of Afro-American Composers.” The suite tells the story of the soul’s journey\, with Summerland a metaphor for entering into heaven. \nPROGRAM \nThree Visions: 1. Dark Horsemen by William Grant Still (1895-1978) \nDanzas Argentinas\, Op. 2 no. 3. by Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983) \nDance of the Renegade Cowboy by Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983) \n  \nPairings to Three Character Flaws by Daniel Weymouth (b.1953) \nThe One About B (Natural): Point and Line to Plane by Daniel Weymouth (b.1953) \nMusica Ricercata\, no. 7 by György Ligeti (1923-2006) \n  \nThe One about E-flat by Frédéric Chopin and Bill Evans Weymouth \nMeet for a Late-Night Supper \nNocturne in E-flat major\, Op. 9 no. 2 by Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) \n  \nThe One about F#: What Florestan Knew by Bill Evans Weymouth \nCarnaval\, Op. 9\, no. 6\, Florestan by Robert Schumann (1810-1856) \nSonata No. 2 in G minor\, Op. 22 by Robert Schumann (1810-1856) \nI. SUMMARY:FILM & TALK | Art & Krimes by Krimes
DESCRIPTION:$16 Adults | $5 for Members\, Students\, Children \nREGISTER\n\n85 min\, 2022\, Directed by Alysa Nahmias\nFollowed by a panel discussion\nJoin us for a screening of the award-winning documentary Art & Krimes by Krimes\, followed by a conversation via Zoom with Jesse Krimes; fellow artists Russell Craig\, Jared Owens\, and Gilberto Rivera; and Director Alysa Nahmias. The program will be moderated in-person at the Museum by Corinne Erni\, Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs and Senior Curator of Artsreach and Special Projects. \nAbout the Film\nWhile serving six years in a federal penitentiary\, artist Jesse Krimes secretly created monumental works of art\, including Apokaluptein: 16389067–an astonishing 40-foot mural made with prison bed sheets\, hair gel\, and newspaper. He smuggled out each panel piece-by-piece with the help of fellow artists\, and saw the complete work for the first time upon his release. As Krimes’s work captured the art world’s attention\, he struggled to adjust to life outside\, living with the threat that any misstep could trigger a life sentence. Described by ARTnews as “an eye-opening look at how one artist is seeking to lift the veil on a part of American society that has been made largely invisible to the public” the film speaks to the power of art as a humanizing force and a call for transformation. \nArt & Krimes by Krimes is directed by Alysa Nahmias;  produced by Amanda Spain\, Benjamin Murray\, and Alysa Nahmias; with executive producers Sheila Nevins\, Jenifer Westphal\, Joe Plummer\, Patty Quillin\, Hallee Adelman\, and  Ivy Herman;  co-executive producers  Nion McEvoy and Leslie Berriman\, Ruth Ann Harnisch\, and Sheri Sobrato-Brisson. Art & Krimes by Krimes is an MTV Documentary Films project\, produced by AJNA Productions in association with Wavelength & Giving Voice Films. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. SUMMARY:Talk | Herzog & de Meuron architects Ascan Mergenthaler and Philip Schmerbeck in conversation with artist Hank Willis Thomas
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nLIVESTREAM\n$12 | Free for Members \nJoin us in celebrating our 10th anniversary in Water Mill in a conversation with Ascan Mergenthaler and Philip Schmerbeck—the architects from the internationally acclaimed firm Herzog & de Meuron who designed the new building—and Hank Willis Thomas\, presenting artist and co-curator of Another Justice: US is Them–Hank Willis Thomas | For Freedoms. Moderated by Museum Executive Director Mónica Ramírez-Montagut\, who holds a Ph.D. in architecture\, the discussion will explore the relationship between the Museum’s design from the architects’ perspective\, as well as from the viewpoint of an artist curating and exhibiting work in the space. \nThe innovative design by Herzog & de MeuronSenior Partner Mergenthaler and Studio Director Schmerbeck integrates architecture and landscape in a plan that both respects and reflects the singular natural beauty and rich artistic legacy of Long Island’s East End. Sited on 14 acres\, the purpose-built structure suggests the vernacular architecture of sheds and potato barns that for generations doubled as artist workspaces. Inspired by the light\, water\, and sky that create the unique atmosphere of the region\, the building features sky-lit galleries that mimic the light and proportions of typical artist’s studio. \n \nIn the exhibition Another Justice: US is Them\, on view through November 6\, Thomas along with other featured artists adopt dynamic and responsive approaches to activate the full volume of the architectural space. Thomas’s wall-sized works made from deconstructed flags envelop the gallery space in fabric. In the Spine\, Christine Sun Kim creates an immersive pathway between the galleries with bold\, vibrant notations from the American Sign Language. Outdoors on the building exterior and grounds\, Thomas activates the museum’s southern-facing façade with a 55–foot neon sign clearly visible from the highway. Muna Malik’s 20–foot longmirrored acrylic boat sited in the Museum’s Meadowentices visitors to venture into and explore the landscape. \nAbout Ascan Mergenthaler\nHerzog & de Meuron Senior Partner Ascan Mergenthaler is in charge of projects in Europe\, Asia\, and the Americas and has led the realization of the de Young Museum in San Francisco; the Parrish Art Museum on Long Island\, New York; the Tate Modern Project in London; the Blavatnik School of Government in Oxford; the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg; 56 Leonard Street in New York City; and Tai Kwun\, Centre for Heritage & Arts; as well as M+\, a cultural center for 20th and 21st century art\, design\, architecture\, and the moving image in Hong Kong. SUMMARY:Music | Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nThe Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival returns to the Parrish Art Museum with a special outdoor concert that transcends cultures and times. The program alternates works for winds and strings\, beginning with Umoja for Wind Quintet by flutist/contemporary composer Valerie Coleman. The Swahili word for “unity\,” Umoja was originally a simple family call-and-response call for unity sung at Kwanzaa. Coleman arranged the tune for her wind quintet Imani Winds\, with the melody carried by French horn. BCMF’s string players take the stage for Trio for Strings in G minor (1894) by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Wind players return for the Humoreske for Wind Quintet (1939) by Viennese composer Alexander Zemlinsky. \nIn Jean Françaix’s String Trio in C (1933)\, three of the four brief movements are bright and crisp\, with a strong kinetic connection to the dance music the composer was writing at the time. BCMF wind players come together with oboe in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Quartet for Oboe\, Violin\, Viola\, and Cello\, K. 370/368b (1781)\, written for the composer’s friend—virtuoso oboist Friedrich Ramm. \nThe concert concludes with contemporary composer Derek Bermel’s Ghanaian dance-inspire\, Wanderings for Wind Quintet (1994) which alludes to the Muslim and Jewish quarters that exist side by without boundaries in Jerusalem’s Old City. Similarly\, in Bermel’s work\, musical threads of continuity appear and suddenly vanish\, remaining elusive. Wanderings reveals influences of gyil music of the Daghati and Lobi peoples\, who live in Northwestern Ghana\, Southern Burkina-Faso\, and Northeastern Ivory Coast. \nARTISTS\nMarya Martin\, flute\nBixby Kennedy\, clarinet\nJames Austin Smith\, oboe\nPeter Kolkay\, bassoon\nStewart Rose\, horn\nStella Chen\, violin\nCong Wu\, viola\nNicholas Canellakis\, cello \nAbout Bridgehampton Chamber Music\nSince 1984\, Bridgehampton Chamber Music has brought the very best of chamber music to Long Island’s East End. From a pair of concerts over a single weekend\, to a series of concerts over 5 weeks in the summer as well as a series of concerts each spring and fall\, BCM has become one of the country’s most highly regarded chamber music organizations in the country. Each year\, some of the world’s finest chamber musicians gather in Bridgehampton to create unique musical experiences. \nIn the event of rain\, the concert will be moved indoors to the Lichtenstein Theater. Advance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. Limited tickets will be available at the door. All sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable. \nAttendees at events in the Museum’s theater\, café\, or studio (ages 5 and older) are required to provide proof of full vaccination in order to maintain a mask-optional environment. Visitors to the Museum galleries (ages 2 and older) are required to wear a medical-grade mask at all times\, regardless of vaccination status. \nMore information surrounding our COVID-19 protocol → \nFriday Nights at the Parrish are made possible\, in part\, by Presenting Sponsor: \n \nAdditional support provided by Weill Cornell Medicine – Southampton and The Corcoran Group
