SUMMARY:Talk | THE SLIP: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$5 Members | $16 Adults (Nonmembers) | $12 Seniors | Free for Students\, Children \nJoin us for a reading and presentation by author Prudence Peiffer following the recent release of her book The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever\, the never-before-told story of an obscure little street at the lower tip of Manhattan and the remarkable artists who got their start there. Recently reviewed by The New York Times\, THE SLIP delves into six visual artist biographies\, tenderly researched with an interpretive mood that echoes the debate on a philosophical approach to art making\, with “a neighborhood-eye view of art history” (Walker Mimms\, New York Times\, 2023). Peiffer’s publication includes profiles of several Parrish permanent collection artists – Agnes Martin\, James Rosenquist\, and Jack Youngerman\, alongside Robert Indiana\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Delphine Seyrig\, and Lenore Tawney. Peiffer will read excerpts from the book and discuss several of the artists\, their works\, and historical photo references. \nAbout THE SLIP\nFor just over a decade\, from 1956 to 1967\, a collection of dilapidated former sail-making warehouses clustered at the lower tip of Manhattan became the quiet epicenter of the art world. Coenties Slip\, a dead-end street near the water\, was home to a circle of wildly talented and varied artists that included Robert Indiana\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Agnes Martin\, James Rosenquist\, Delphine Seyrig\, Lenore Tawney\, and Jack Youngerman. As friends and inspirations to one another\, they created a unique community for unbridled creative expression and experimentation\, and the works they made at the Slip would go on to change the course of American art. \nNow\, for the first time\, Prudence Peiffer pays homage to these artists and the unsung impact their work had on the direction of late twentieth-century art and film. This remarkable biography\, as transformative as the artists it illuminates\, questions the very concept of a “group” or “movement\,” as it spotlights the Slip’s eclectic mix of gender and sexual orientation\, abstraction and Pop\, experimental film\, painting\, and sculpture\, assemblage and textile works. \nAbout Prudence Peiffer\nPrudence Peiffer is an art historian\, writer\, and editor\, specializing in modern and contemporary art. She is the Director of Content at MoMA\, New York. She received her Ph.D from Harvard University; following a postdoctoral fellowship at Columbia University\, she was a Senior Editor at Artforum magazine from 2012-2017\, and Digital Content Director at David Zwirner in 2018. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times\, The New York Review of Books online\, Artforum\, and Bookforum\, among other publications. \nSupport for Friday Nights at the Parrish Art Museum is provided by The Corcoran Group.

SUMMARY:Talk | Alicia G. Longwell on the Parrish at 125 Years
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n$5 Members | $16 Adults (Nonmembers) | $12 Seniors | Free for Students\, Children \nAs the Parrish celebrates its landmark anniversary\, the Museum presents the first of a series of lectures and conversations that delve into its rich and storied history. In 1952\, Rebecca Bolling Littlejohn assumed the presidency of the Parrish’s Board of Trustees and began a crusade that would rename\, rebrand\, and revive the waning institution and bring it into the 20th Century\, including the acquisition of the first William Merritt Chase paintings and also works by contemporary East End artists Fairfield Porter\, Larry Rivers\, and John D. Graham. Join Chief Curator Emeritus\, Alicia G. Longwell\, for a reflection on this remarkable innovator while recalling her own four-decade career at the Museum—so often inspired by Mrs. Littlejohn’s stirring legacy. \nLongwell served as the Parrish Art Museum’s Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education for over three decades until her retirement in October 2022. She received her Ph.D. from the Graduate Center\, City University of New York\, where her dissertation topic was John Graham. Throughout her tenure\, she was integral in building the Museum’s collection through identifying and pursuing acquisitions\, including major works by Ross Bleckner\, Mary Heilmann\, Lonnie Holley\, Elizabeth Peyton\, David Salle\, Alan Shields\, and Joe Zucker. \nAmong her most notable curatorial achievements are Sand: Memory\, Meaning and Metaphor (2008)\, John Graham: Maverick Modernist (2017)\, and Affinities for Abstraction: Women Artists on Eastern Long Island\, 1950-2020 (2021). Longwell ushered the Museum into its new building in Water Mill\, planning the inaugural installations of the Parrish collection for the 2012 opening that featured the exhibition Malcolm Morley: Painting\, Paper\, Process (2012). She has organized numerous survey exhibitions including Dorothea Rockburne: In My Mind’s Eye (2011) and North Fork/South Fork: East End Art Now (2004)\, as well as solo exhibitions on the work of artists Barbara Bloom\, Marsden Hartley\, Frederick Kiesler\, Alan Shields\, Esteban Vicente\, and Jack Youngerman\, among many others. \nFriday Night Programming is made possible\, in part\, by Weill-Cornell Medicine – Southampton and The Corcoran Group.

SUMMARY:Listen | Alexandria Le\, Solo Piano
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$25 Members | $35 Adults (Nonmembers) | $20 for Students\, Children \nJoin us for a special Salon Series concert featuring soloist Alexandria Le\, laureate of the Pro Musicis International Award and the Ackerman Chamber Music Competition. In 2012\, Le won a coveted fellowship position with Ensemble Connect (formerly Ensemble ACJW\, the Academy of Carnegie Hall and the Juilliard School and the Weill Institute of Music) and has performed regularly at Carnegie Hall\, the Juilliard School\, and other venues around New York City. \nAmong the many selections in her Salon Series program\, Le’s dynamic pairings of American and non-American musical works will include two works that combine classical and pop music genres. French composer Francis Poulenc’s florid\, lyrical Improvisation no. 15: Hommage à Édith Piaf—the quintessential French chanteuse—is coupled with a piano arrangement of George Gershwin’s distinctly American Rhapsody in Blue that combines elements of classical and jazz\, established with the iconic opening siren-like clarinet riff and continuing with sections that evoke the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple in the 1920s. Her program also includes Claude Debussy’s Clair de Lune\, a hallmark of French Impressionism\, paired with Summerland from the 1935 suite Three Visions by William Grant Still\, often referred to as the “Dean of Afro-American Composers.” The suite tells the story of the soul’s journey\, with Summerland a metaphor for entering into heaven. \nPROGRAM \nThree Visions: 1. SUMMARY:FILM & TALK | Art & Krimes by Krimes
DESCRIPTION:$16 Adults | $5 for Members\, Students\, Children \nREGISTER\n\n85 min\, 2022\, Directed by Alysa Nahmias\nFollowed by a panel discussion\nJoin us for a screening of the award-winning documentary Art & Krimes by Krimes\, followed by a conversation via Zoom with Jesse Krimes; fellow artists Russell Craig\, Jared Owens\, and Gilberto Rivera; and Director Alysa Nahmias. The program will be moderated in-person at the Museum by Corinne Erni\, Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs and Senior Curator of Artsreach and Special Projects. \nAbout the Film\nWhile serving six years in a federal penitentiary\, artist Jesse Krimes secretly created monumental works of art\, including Apokaluptein: 16389067–an astonishing 40-foot mural made with prison bed sheets\, hair gel\, and newspaper. He smuggled out each panel piece-by-piece with the help of fellow artists\, and saw the complete work for the first time upon his release. As Krimes’s work captured the art world’s attention\, he struggled to adjust to life outside\, living with the threat that any misstep could trigger a life sentence. Described by ARTnews as “an eye-opening look at how one artist is seeking to lift the veil on a part of American society that has been made largely invisible to the public” the film speaks to the power of art as a humanizing force and a call for transformation. \nArt & Krimes by Krimes is directed by Alysa Nahmias;  produced by Amanda Spain\, Benjamin Murray\, and Alysa Nahmias; with executive producers Sheila Nevins\, Jenifer Westphal\, Joe Plummer\, Patty Quillin\, Hallee Adelman\, and  Ivy Herman;  co-executive producers  Nion McEvoy and Leslie Berriman\, Ruth Ann Harnisch\, and Sheri Sobrato-Brisson. Art & Krimes by Krimes is an MTV Documentary Films project\, produced by AJNA Productions in association with Wavelength & Giving Voice Films. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended.
