The Black Film Festival\, Part II\, will screen Can You Bring It: Bill T. Jones and D-Man in the Waters\, a feature documentary that traces the history and legacy of one of the most important works of art to come out of the age of AIDS—Bill T. Jones’ tour de force ballet “D-Man in the Waters.” The screening is followed by a panel with Producer and Co-Director Rosalynde LeBlanc; social worker\, poet\, and activist Lora Rene Tucker; and John Oppenheimer\, M.D\, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. \nThe Black Film Festival presents award-winning short and feature films and documentaries that highlight the work of black filmmakers as well as stories that describe and elevate black lives and experiences\, touching on current sociopolitical topics\, art\, music\, performance\, mental and physical health\, among others. SUMMARY:Film & Talk | Queen of Hearts: Audrey Flack
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$13 Museum Members | $20 Adults & Resident Passholders | $18 Seniors | $15 Member’s Guest | $10 Students | $5 Children \nQueen of Hearts: Audrey Flack\, 2019\, 75 min.\, Directed by Deborah Shaffer. \nJoin us for a screening of Queen of Hearts: Audrey Flack\, as the Parrish commemorates Flack’s life and career\, in conjunction with Audrey Flack: Mid-Century to Post-Pop Baroque\, on view from October 14\, 2024 through April 6\, 2025. After the screening\, Director Deborah Shaffer and Louis K. Meisel will join in conversation with Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art & Education\, as they discuss their relationships with Flack throughout her career and during the film production. \nAbout Audrey Flack\nAudrey Flack (1931–2024) was an internationally recognized painter and sculptor and a pioneer of photorealism. Flack taught and lectured extensively both nationally and internationally\, was awarded the Augustus St. Gaudens Medal from Cooper Union\, and was an honorary Albert Dorne Professor at Bridgeport University. Among many major museums around the world\, her work also resides in The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, Whitney Museum of American Art\, National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Butler Institute of American Art\, National Gallery of Australia\, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art\, and the Allen Memorial Art Museum\, as well as at the Parrish Art Museum. Additionally\, she is the first woman artist\, along with Mary Cassatt\, to be included in Janson’s History of Art text. \nAbout the Film\nAt 88 years-old\, Audrey Flack holds a unique place in the history of contemporary art in America. Feminist\, rebel\, mother\, painter\, sculptor\, and teacher\, Audrey’s often controversial 40-year career evolved from abstract expressionism in the 1950s to photorealism in the 1970s. One of the first women ever included in the famed Janson’s History of Art\, Audrey continues to create\, explore\, and inspire with her unique style and indomitable spirit. Queen of Hearts follows Flack as she takes her work in a brand-new direction and reveals her long-term struggles as the mother of a child with autism. Flack has something deep and genuine to communicate to the world. She is a provocateur and a rebel\, an example and an inspiration. Queen of Hearts is a moving portrait of an artist who is still testing\, still experimenting\, still searching. \nFriday Nights are made possible by support from The Corcoran Group. Support for films at the Parrish is provided in part by Suffolk County Office of Cultural Affairs.

Capitalizing on the popularity of the Adam West–starring American television series\, director Rene Cardona—later known for his luchador (masked wrestler) adventure movies—began work on a film that would showcase the talents of actress Maura Monti. By blending elements of “Batmania” with Mexico’s popular lucha libre style\, Cardona created a unique take on the superhero genre. In this 1968 Mexican version\, shot in the stunning locale of Acapulco\, the gorgeous Maura Monti dons the cape\, cowl\, boots\, and bikini to take on the lead role of Batwoman. With her stunning beauty and crime-fighting finesse\, she is called upon to investigate a mad scientist who is capturing wrestlers and using their spinal fluid to create a Gill Man. Starring Roberto Cañedo\, Héctor Godoy\, David Silva\, Crox Alvarado\, Armando Silvestre\, Manuel Capetillo\, Ofelia Chávez\, and Carlos Suárez. \nSupport for films at the Parrish is provided by Suffolk County Office of Cultural Affairs; Support for Friday Nights is provided by The Corcoran Group. The Black Film Festival\, Part I\, will screen Gaining Ground: The Fight for Black Land\, a new\, stirring documentary from Executive Producer Al Roker\, that examines the cause and effects of the issues and experiences of people impacted by land loss. \nThe Black Film Festival presents award-winning short and feature films and documentaries that highlight the work of black filmmakers as well as stories that describe and elevate black lives and experiences\, touching on current sociopolitical topics\, art\, music\, performance\, mental and physical health\, among others. FRIDA\, directed by Carla Gutiérrez\, is an intimately raw and magical journey through the life\, mind\, and heart of iconic artist Frida Kahlo. Told through her own words for the very first time — drawn from her diary\, revealing letters\, essays\, and print interviews — and brought vividly to life by lyrical animation inspired by her unforgettable artwork. \nGutiérrez\, renowned for her masterful editing of films including Sundance Film Festival projects RBG (2018)\, When Two Worlds Collide (2016)\, and Cesar’s Last Fast (2014)\, brings artistry and a deep understanding of her subject to an astonishing directorial debut. Through a cacophony of rich archival sights\, music\, and journal entries joyfully brought to life\, we become immersed in Frida’s interior world\, fears\, arduous relationships\, and events that drove her indelible artistic creations. Gutiérrez vibrantly guides us through Frida’s complex relationship to her own work\, navigating the tension between art as commerce and painting for pleasure and self-knowledge. With reverence\, thoughtfulness\, and the color of pure emotion\, FRIDA invites us to get to know one of the greatest artists of the 20th century in a completely new way. \nNote: This film contains nudity and may not be suitable for younger audiences. \nFriday Nights are made possible\, in part by The Corcoran Group. SUMMARY:Film | Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \n$13 Members | $20 Adults | $18 Seniors | $15 Member’s Guest | $10 Students | $5 Children \nDirected and Produced by Sam Pollard and Ben Shapiro\, 2023\, 82 min. \nIn celebration of Black History Month and in collaboration with Hamptons Doc Fest\, the Parrish presents a screening of Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes – delving into the life and music of the legendary drummer\, composer\, bandleader\, and social activist through a remarkable series of creative peaks\, struggles\, and personal reinventions—from the Jim Crow era to the Civil Rights years\, surveying the heady days of post-war modern jazz to hip hop and beyond. The film screening will be followed by a live Zoom Q&A session with Co-Director Ben Shapiro\, led by Jacqui Lofaro\, Executive Director of Hamptons Doc Fest. \nMax Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes is the story of a musician whose far-reaching ambitions were inspired and challenged by the inequities of the society around him. His stunningly diverse seven-decade career marked him as one of the great musical artists of the 20th century and a pioneering cultural activist at times when the nation was steeped in racism. The film follows Roach across a rich and complicated life\, years of now-legendary achievement\, deep personal struggle\, and the price he paid for his outspoken views. His was an epic musical journey — from the revolutionary Jazz of the 1940s to the Civil Rights years\, through experiments in hip hop\, multi-media works\, and beyond. \nFriday Nights are made possible\, in part by The Corcoran Group.

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk | Artists Choose Parrish\, Part II
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$10 Members | $20 Adults | $18 Seniors | $15 Member’s Guest | Free for Students & Children \nPlease note that there is limited capacity for Gallery Talks; space is limited to 15 guests. \nJoin us for a gallery talk with artist Donald Sultan who will discuss his approach to pairing his work with works from the Parrish collection for Artists Choose Parrish\, a landmark exhibition that celebrates the Parrish’s 125th anniversary and honors the East End’s rich artistic legacy. The program will take place in the galleries among the works Sultan selected for the exhibition. \nSultan is one of forty-one artists with deep local roots who were invited to select works from the collection to be shown along with their own. Choosing works by Charles Burchfield\, R.M. Fischer\, Valerie Jaudon\, Roy Lichtenstein\, Donald Lipski\, Dan Rizzie\, and Keith Sonnier\, he says: “All of the art I chose is abstract in nature even if it contains a kind of image—the images are loaded. They are art historical torn from the natural world but not bound by it. The artists are all mature and yet have a certainty of their craft. There is no guesswork in the making\, only in the message.” \nArtists Choose Parrish is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education\, with additional support from Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator\, and Brianna L. Hernández\, Assistant Curator. \nAbout \nDONALD SULTAN (b. 1951\, Asheville\, NC) earned his BFA from the University of North Carolina\, Chapel Hill\, and MFA from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago before establishing himself in New York in 1975. Since his solo debut in 1977\, Sultan has excelled as a distinguished painter\, printmaker\, and sculptor. Renowned for seamlessly merging traditional and modern elements\, Sultan’s large-scale paintings\, often classified as still lifes\, present bold compositions employing industrial materials like tar and concrete\, contributing to the unique texture and character of his pieces. Sultan’s art\, described by him as a blend of basic geometric and organic forms with a formal purity\, has left an indelible mark on contemporary art. Sultan’s subjects evolve organically\, maintaining powerful statements amid abstraction. His work\, showcased globally in solo and group exhibitions\, is a part of prestigious permanent collections\, including The Museum of Modern Art\, the Dallas Museum of Art\, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. Limited tickets will be available at the door. All sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable. \nFriday Nights are made possible\, in part\, by The Corcoran Group.
