The exhibition at the Parrish pays tribute to the original exhibition by presenting a selection of works from several of the artists included in the original exhibition—Robert Guinan\, David Hockney\, Raymond Mason\, Philippe Roman\, and Sam Szafran as well as R.B. Kitaj from the Parrish’s collection—and works by artists whose work has continued the figurative traditions celebrated in Nouvelle Subjectivité\, some also drawn from the collection of the Parrish\, such as Rackstraw Downes\, Jane Freilicher\, and Howard Kanovitz\, and artists working today not in the collection\, such as Martí Cormand\, Jordan Casteel\, Peter Doig\, Jenna Gribbon\, and Arcmanoro Niles.

Limited spaces will be available at the door. \nAbout the Exhibition\nThe Parrish presents a selection of photographs by Ralph Gibson from a series based on the relationship between shapes found in nature and human constructs; positing that nature is visually evident in all genres of industrial design\, and architecture is evoked in the correlation between form and ergonomic function. In this exhibition\, Gibson highlights the relationship between perspective\, color\, and proportion. The 35mm Leica format and optical glass are an essential component of the work\, and the dimensions of the frame are based on the ancient Greek “Golden Means.” \nAbout Ralph Gibson\nRalph Gibson (b. 1939\, Hollywood\, California) was the son of an assistant director to Alfred Hitchcock and as a young boy would visit movie sets during filming; he also worked as an extra and acted in bit parts. He was impressed by the power of the camera lens and the intensity of the lights. Gibson studied photography while in the U.S. Navy and later at the San Francisco Art Institute; he worked as an assistant to Dorothea Lange and collaborated with Robert Frank on two films. Gibson has had a lifelong fascination with books and book making; since the 1970 publication of The Somnambulist\, his work has been steadily impelled toward the printed page\, with at least forty monographs issued. \nGibson’s photographs are included in more than 180 museum collections around the world and have appeared in hundreds of one-person exhibitions. He has lectured and led workshops in more than twenty countries. In 2010 he collaborated with Lou Reed on the film Red Shirley\, which was screened in festivals in Europe and North America. Gibson’s awards include fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts\, as well as the Leica Medal of Excellence and a Leica Hall of Fame Award\, a Lucie Achievement Award\, and the Silver Plumb Award. A Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur\, he holds honorary doctorates from Ohio Wesleyan University and the University of Maryland. In 2019 he was elected to the International Photography Hall of Fame. The Gibson | Goeun Museum of Photography\, which opened in Busan\, South Korea\, in 2022 and houses more than a thousand original prints\, is the most comprehensive collection of the artist’s work in Asia.

Join today → \nAbout Sean Scully\nSean Scully’s (Irish\, b. 1945) work is in the collection of virtually every major museum around the world. In 2014 he became the first Western artist to have a career-length retrospective in China. He was awarded the International Artist of the Year Prize in Hong Kong in 2018. His important solo exhibitions include Landline at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington\, D.C.\, which traveled to the Wadsworth Atheneum\, Hartford; Landline and Other Works\, De Pont Museum\, Tilburg\, Netherlands; Sea Star\, National Gallery\, London; the retrospective Vita Duplex\, Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe\, Germany; and a presentation of sculptures at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park\, England. Among other exhibitions are: Eleuthera\, new figurative paintings shown at the Albertina\, Vienna; the retrospective Long Light at the Villa e Collezione Panza\, Varese\, Italy; and Human\, paintings and sculptures presented at San Giorgio Maggiore for the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019. His first exhibition in central Europe\, Passenger\, at the Hungarian National Gallery\, Budapest\, traveled to the Benaki Museum\, Athens\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art\, Zagreb. \nA fifty-year career retrospective\, Sean Scully: The Shape of Ideas\, was organized and shown at the Philadelphia Museum of Art  and traveled to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth\, his exhibitions have included Material World\, Thorvaldsens Museum\, Copenhagen; Painting and Sculpture\, Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej\, Toruń\, Poland; Song of Color\, Langen Foundation\, Neuss\, Germany; and A Wound in a Dance with Love\, Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$20 Adults & Resident Benefits PassHolder | $10 Members | $18 Seniors | Free for Students & Children \nAs we celebrate the installment of FRESH PAINT featuring Derrick Adams’ work on view in the Creativity Lounge\, join us for a conversation in the Lichtenstein Theater with artist Derrick Adams\, Folasade Ologundudu\, who was commissioned to write the text that accompanies Adams’ work\, and Mónica Ramírez-Montagut\, Ph.D.\, Executive Director of the Parrish. \nFRESH PAINT spotlights the latest works by both emerging and established artists\, fostering a direct response to contemporary issues and cultural movements\, on a rotating basis. FRESH PAINT is a collaboration with the FLAG Art Foundation and is accompanied by educational initiatives\, including ARTscope\, a teen council program offering participants a comprehensive exploration of the visual arts\, career pathways\, and practical experience in museum operations. \nAbout Derrick Adams\nDerrick Adams is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Brooklyn\, New York. Adams’ work celebrates and expands the dialogue around contemporary Black life and culture through scenes of normalcy and perseverance. \nDerrick Adams received his BFA from Pratt Institute\, New York\, in 1996 and graduated with an MFA from Columbia University\, New York\, in 2003. In addition to his critically acclaimed art practice\, Adams has held numerous teaching positions and is currently a tenured assistant professor in the School of Visual\, Media and Performing Arts at CUNY Brooklyn College. He also holds an honorary doctorate from Maryland Institute College of Art. \nIn 2022\, Adams established Charm City Cultural Cultivation\, a non-profit organization to support and encourage underserved communities in the city of Baltimore through events conducted by three entities: The Last Resort Artist Retreat\, a residency program that subscribes to the concept of leisure as therapy for the Black creative; The Black Baltimore Digital Database\, a collaborative counter-institutional space for collecting\, storing\, and safekeeping the data of local archival initiatives; and Zora’s Den\, an online community of Black women writers started in January 2017\, which has since expanded to in-person writing workshops\, a writers’ circle\, and a monthly reading series that strive to promote instruction\, support\, and social engagement. \nAbout Folasade Ologundudu\nFolasade Ologundudu is an independent producer\, writer\, curator\, and multidisciplinary artist based in New York. Her practice seeks to uncover ideas related to the universal human condition through text-based work\, photography\, and film. She has written art criticism\, profiles\, interviews\, and essays for ArtForum\, ARTnews\, Cultured Magazine\, Sculpture Magazine\, and Frieze\, among other publications. Ologundudu is also the founder of Light Work\, a creative media platform rooted at the intersection of art\, education\, and culture. After the screening\, Director Deborah Shaffer and Louis K. Meisel will join in conversation with Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art & Education\, as they discuss their relationships with Flack throughout her career and during the film production. \nAbout Audrey Flack\nAudrey Flack (1931–2024) was an internationally recognized painter and sculptor and a pioneer of photorealism. Flack taught and lectured extensively both nationally and internationally\, was awarded the Augustus St. Gaudens Medal from Cooper Union\, and was an honorary Albert Dorne Professor at Bridgeport University. Among many major museums around the world\, her work also resides in The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, Whitney Museum of American Art\, National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Butler Institute of American Art\, National Gallery of Australia\, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art\, and the Allen Memorial Art Museum\, as well as at the Parrish Art Museum. Additionally\, she is the first woman artist\, along with Mary Cassatt\, to be included in Janson’s History of Art text. \nAbout the Film\nAt 88 years-old\, Audrey Flack holds a unique place in the history of contemporary art in America. Feminist\, rebel\, mother\, painter\, sculptor\, and teacher\, Audrey’s often controversial 40-year career evolved from abstract expressionism in the 1950s to photorealism in the 1970s. One of the first women ever included in the famed Janson’s History of Art\, Audrey continues to create\, explore\, and inspire with her unique style and indomitable spirit. Queen of Hearts follows Flack as she takes her work in a brand-new direction and reveals her long-term struggles as the mother of a child with autism. Flack has something deep and genuine to communicate to the world. She is a provocateur and a rebel\, an example and an inspiration. Join today → \n  \nAbout the Exhibitions\nCharlotte Park: The Life of Forms in Color is a survey comprising more than 70 paintings and works on paper\, drawn exclusively from the 2017 gift of works to the Parrish by the James and Charlotte Brooks Foundation. Overshadowed by the attention given to the work of her husband\, James Brooks\, Park kept a fairly low profile over the course of her career while painting some of the strongest and most brilliantly colored canvases of her time. Color and form\, often related to the living environment surrounding the studio she shared with her husband\, were strong and constant forces in her work. \nRalph Gibson—Nature : Object will feature a selection of photographs by Ralph Gibson from a series based on the relationship between shapes found in nature and human constructs; positing that nature is visually evident in all genres of industrial design\, and architecture is evoked in the correlation between form and ergonomic function. Join today → \n  \nAbout the Fall 2024 Exhibitions\nA New Subjectivity 1979/2024 pays tribute to the original exhibition Nouvelle Subjectivité in Brussels in 1979\, which highlighted figurative and expressionist painting as a retort to the prevailing minimalist and conceptual trends at the time. Please call if you would like to bring guests. \nAbout the Artist\nJennifer de Klaver is a painter based in Southampton\, New York\, whose abstract works merge gestural forms with a profound sense of calm and inevitability. “I am inspired by color\, sound\, and movement\,” she explains. “My art flows from the heart\, guided by intuition.” This intuitive process infuses her paintings with a deep connection to the soul\, evident in the emotive textures\, marks\, and meditative energy that characterize her work. \nde Klaver’s art delves into the most intimate connections to source. Through a hybrid form of abstract expressionism\, she plays with contrast\, color\, connectivity\, and a language tied to light—all inspired by the beauty of nature. \nGrowing up in Belgium\, de Klaver’s appreciation for the arts began early. As the daughter of a painter\, she traveled extensively throughout Europe\, immersing herself in the works of the great masters in Paris\, Rome\, Florence\, Barcelona\, and the Netherlands. For de Klaver\, painting is a form of meditation\, healing\, and inner storytelling—a process vividly expressed through the dynamic movements and calligraphic forms in her work. \nCurrently\, de Klaver paints out of a former commercial garage in Southampton\, New York. Registration is closed.*\nFor the 2024 Parrish Road Show\, the Parrish Art Museum has invited Andrea Cote to create a site-specific exhibition at Bridge Gardens in Bridgehampton. Now in its thirteenth year\, Parrish Road Show is the Museum’s off-site project designed to encourage engagement and interaction between artists and the communities beyond the Museum’s walls. To Belong to the World will be an outdoor installation composed of uniquely printed fabric and bamboo structures that complement and highlight the Garden’s landscape. The work continues Cote’s exploration of her connection with the environment through daily exposed cyanotypes reflecting the sun\, cosmos\, and body. \nAn opening reception will be held on Saturday\, September 14\, 2024 at 2 PM at Bridge Gardens. Andrea Cote\, along with Parrish Associate Curator and Publications Manager Kaitlin Halloran will introduce the exhibition with brief remarks. Light refreshments will be served. \nPlease note: Parking at Bridge Gardens is limited. Join today →\n  \nCelebrated for his bright\, bold\, and colorful paintings\, Eddie Martinez will present a new body of work made specifically for the Parrish. Taking full advantage of the Museum’s expansive space and high ceilings\, Martinez is creating seven 12-foot tall Bufly paintings. Like much of his work\, these canvases are imbued with a personal iconography. The artist started the Bufly series in 2021 when his son Arthur who was two at the time became fascinated with butterflies\, mispronouncing them as “buflies.” Martinez has been painting them ever since. \nEddie Martinez: Buflies is organized by Corinne Erni\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs\, with additional support from Kaitlin Halloran\, Assistant Curator and Publications Coordinator. \nFollowing on the heels of the publication of her first career-spanning monograph\, Sam Moyer’s solo exhibition at the Parrish Art Museum will showcase the artist’s relationship to material and light as a throughline in her practice\, displaying the range of her processes\, and bodies of work\, across three galleries. Focusing each space on a specific material relationship\, Moyer presents a large-scale stone painting tailor-fit to the architecture of the room\, sculptural photographs whose composition are specific to the landscape of Eastern Long Island\, and a series of smaller\, more representational wall works. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nParrish Contemporaries Circle members are invited to help kick off the summer with a toast at Elena Frampton’s Bridgehampton gallery\, Exhibition The Barn. Currently on view\, is Janelle Lynch: Endless Forms Most Beautiful\, a collaboration between Frampton Co. with London and Hong Kong-based Flowers Gallery. This exhibition of works made by Janelle Lynch in Amagansett\, New York\, during 2022–2023\, will include cyanotypes\, a camera-less 19th century photographic process\, of botanical and wildlife remains and Lynch’s own body through which she affirms the fundamental value of all life in its various manifestations\, including the afterlife. The unique works are evidence of physical existence and\, as abstractions in hues of blue and white\, also suggest the ethereal world. Remarks by the artist will take place at 6 PM. \nAbout Exhibition\nA stone’s throw from the ocean\, Exhibition The Barn is situated in the serene hamlet of Bridgehampton in Long Island\, New York. Through high-profile curatorial partnerships and immersive exhibitions\, the gallery brings a modern and engaging contribution to the east end’s artistic heritage. \nThe event is for active Contemporaries Circle members. Carmen Herrera: Estructuras Monumentales features four large-scale sculptures in red\, blue\, yellow\, and green in the Museum’s South Meadow. Advanced registration is required. \nNot a Parrish member? Join today →\n  \nCarmen Herrera (American\, b. Cuba\, 1915–2022) is known for her hard-edge paintings\, prints\, and sculptures—often representing geometric shapes with both symmetrical and asymmetrical abstractions. The four works installed in the Meadow\, Angulo Azul (2017)\, Angulo Amarillo (2017)\, Estructura Verde (1966/2018)\, and Gemini (Red) (1971/2019) are part of Herrera’s series Estructuras\, which she initially envisioned as sketches and paintings in the 1960s. In 1971\, Herrera fabricated four Estructuras in wood—three wall-based works and one free-standing. However\, it was only in the final fifteen years of the artist’s life that she was able to realize her vision for these monumental sculptures on a larger scale.
