Limited spaces will be available at the door. \n  \nAbout the Exhibition\nThe Parrish Art Museum will present Nina Yankowitz: In the Out/Out the In\, the first retrospective of Nina Yankowitz (American\, b. 1946)\, whose six-decade career has continually expanded the boundaries of painting\, sculpture\, sound\, video\, and installation. Yankowitz came to prominence in the 1960s in New York\, where she experimented with the material and technical possibilities of canvas\, cardboard\, paint sprayers\, and sewing equipment to create abstract paintings. A founding member of the Heresies Collective (1976–1993)\, Yankowitz’s early approach to painting was informed by the feminist movement\, Process art\, and the legacy of Abstract Expressionism. She also participated in the countercultural scenes of Greenwich Village and upstate New York\, and her collaborations with the experimental Group 212 Inter-Media Project encouraged her interest in performance and new media. In the following decades\, her practice branched out into sculpture\, sound and video art\, and interactive installations that harness the technology behind social media platforms and video games. \nNina Yankowitz: In the Out/Out the In is organized by the Museum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\, FL. The presentation at the Parrish is organized by Corinne Erni\, The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator of Art and Education\, with Scout Hutchinson\, The FLAG Art Foundation Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Parrish Art Museum. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER  JOIN TODAY\nJoin Parrish Contemporary Circle Members and artist Almond Zigmund in conversation with Corinne Erni\, The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator of Art and Education and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs\, for refreshments and light bites in front of Zigmund’s Gridded Commune (2023)\, the Parrish’s inaugural Café mural. \nThis event is for Members of the Parrish Art Museum at the Contemporary Circle level and above. Advanced registration is required and limited space is available. \n  \n \nAbout Almond Zigmund\nRaised in Brooklyn\, NY\, Almond Zigmund received her BFA from Parsons School of Design\, in New York and Paris\, and MFA from the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas\, where she studied with the MacArthur Award-winning critic\, Dave Hickey. \nZigmund makes large scale site responsive installations\, discrete sculptures\, works on paper and paintings. Combining crisp geometry\, vivid color\, and intricate patterns\, her sculptures and installations often suggest walls\, barricades\, enclosures\, and other aspects of the built environment. The architectonic works tend to engage the eye and the body at once\, offering generous amounts of visual stimulation while also inducing visceral reactions to the virtual and actual spaces. \nZigmund’s work has been exhibited in Zurich\, Berlin\, New York\, Columbus\, Los Angeles\, and Las Vegas among others. She has worked with various curators and artists including Parrish Chief Curator Corinne Erni\, former Parrish Chief Curator Alicia Longwell\, Dave Hickey\, Robert Storr\, David Pagel\, Andrea Grover\, and Leo Villareal. She has completed public and private installations and commissions\, including the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill\, Guild Hall in East Hampton\, the CMA in New York City and for Lisa Perry’s Onna House. She has done numerous public commissions\, most recently for the newly designed US Embassy in Asuncion\, Paraguay. She has completed numerous large scale murals most notably for Brookfield Art at One NY Plaza\, the NYC Dept of Transportation\, the The Whitman Walker Health Center in Washington DC\, Guild Hall in East Hampton\, NY\, and the University of Laverne in Los Angeles. Almond Zigmund was inducted into the Guild Hall Academy of Arts in 2025. The film was directed by Neshat and Shoja Azari\, and stars Sheila Vand\, Matt Dillon\, William Moseley\, Isabella Rossellini\, and Anna Gunn\, among others. Galleries will be open until 7 PM on Sunday\, August 10. \nAbout the Film\nSimin is an Iranian woman on a journey to discover what it means to be a free American. She works for the Census Bureau which\, in an effort to control its citizens\, has begun a program to record their dreams. Unaware of this devious plot\, Simin is torn between her compassion for those whose dreams she is recording and a truth she must find within. \nHaunted by the fact that her father was executed by the Islamic regime in Iran\, Simin has developed a coping mechanism through a world of fantasy and playacting. She captures her interviewees’ dreams\, secretly impersonates them in Farsi and publishes them on social media where she finds a growing Iranian audience. \nSoon Simin meets Mark; a drifter\, a free soul\, and a poet who declares his love for her at first sight; and Alan\, a cynical cowboy turned detective\, full of machismo and the American spirit of adventure. As Simin enters the triad\, she finds the two men’s competition and conflicts amusing and silently enjoys the ride. \nPlayful and poignant\, Land of Dreams acknowledges in a surreal and satirical way\, the greatness of the American experiment while offering a warning beacon for what could come. \nAbout the Exhibition\nShirin Neshat: Born of Fire marks the artist’s first museum exhibition in the New York area in over 20 years. The show offers a non-linear survey of Neshat’s artistic development\, presenting focused installations of four significant bodies of work. These range from her first major photographic works\, Women of Allah (1993–7)—images inspired by women’s involvement in the Islamic Revolution and Iran-Iraq War—to The Book of Kings (2012)\, a portrait series that calls on the tradition of Persian epic poetry to address the Arab Spring protest movement. The exhibition will also include more recent projects that present Neshat’s surreal film and video works alongside still photographs\, including Land of Dreams (2019)\, in which the artist turns her attention to exploring American culture from the perspective of an Iranian artist in exile\, and The Fury (2022–3)\, addressing sexual exploitation of female political prisoners. \n\nThough distinct\, all four bodies of work are connected by motifs of rebellion\, storytelling\, and human connection; presented together\, they reveal how these key themes have developed throughout Neshat’s artistic evolution. These range from her first major photographic works\, Women of Allah (1993–7)—images inspired by women’s involvement in the Islamic Revolution and Iran-Iraq War—to The Book of Kings (2012)\, a portrait series that calls on the tradition of Persian epic poetry to address the Arab Spring protest movement. The exhibition will also include more recent projects that present Neshat’s surreal film and video works alongside still photographs\, including Land of Dreams (2019)\, in which the artist turns her attention to exploring American culture from the perspective of an Iranian artist in exile\, and The Fury (2022–3)\, addressing sexual exploitation of female political prisoners. \nThough distinct\, all four bodies of work are connected by motifs of rebellion\, storytelling\, and human connection; presented together\, they reveal how these key themes have developed throughout Neshat’s artistic evolution. Working with their art teachers\, after school programs and in art clubs\, the students demonstrate creativity\, enthusiasm\, and technical skill in media ranging from painting to sculpture\, drawing\, and photography. This exhibition will also feature student works created with visiting artist Andrea Cote. \nVisiting Artist Initiative\nThe Parrish’s Visiting Artist Initiative\, How Artists Work\, connects students and teachers with working artists\, providing insights into their artistic practices and guiding students through their own creative explorations. The program has expanded to include participants in the Access Parrish program. This year\, the exhibition highlights work created by students in collaboration with visiting artist Andrea Cote. Drawing on her recent project for the Museum’s 13th Parrish Road Show at Bridge Gardens in Fall 2024\, To Belong to the World\, Cote shared her process and inspiration for the site-specific works which incorporated garden plant life and explored her body’s connection to nature’s cycles. Students experimented with several techniques she uses to develop her imagery including cyanotype and printmaking\, incorporating themes of the human body and our interconnectedness with nature. The final installation of the show is curated by the ARTscope Teen Council.  \nAbout Linda White & The Imagination Play Project\nAs a play curator\, Linda White’s focus began with young children and has grown to working with people of all ages and abilities. Limited spaces will be available at the door. \nAbout the Exhibition\nCharlotte Park: The Life of Forms in Color is a survey comprising more than 70 paintings and works on paper\, drawn exclusively from the 2017 gift of works to the Parrish by the James and Charlotte Brooks Foundation. Overshadowed by the attention given to the work of her husband\, James Brooks\, Park kept a fairly low profile over the course of her career while painting some of the strongest and most brilliantly colored canvases of her time. Color and form\, often related to the living environment surrounding the studio she shared with her husband\, were strong and constant forces in her work.

Limited spaces will be available at the door. \nAbout the Exhibition\nThe Parrish presents a selection of photographs by Ralph Gibson from a series based on the relationship between shapes found in nature and human constructs; positing that nature is visually evident in all genres of industrial design\, and architecture is evoked in the correlation between form and ergonomic function. In this exhibition\, Gibson highlights the relationship between perspective\, color\, and proportion. The 35mm Leica format and optical glass are an essential component of the work\, and the dimensions of the frame are based on the ancient Greek “Golden Means.” \nAbout Ralph Gibson\nRalph Gibson (b. 1939\, Hollywood\, California) was the son of an assistant director to Alfred Hitchcock and as a young boy would visit movie sets during filming; he also worked as an extra and acted in bit parts. He was impressed by the power of the camera lens and the intensity of the lights. Gibson studied photography while in the U.S. Navy and later at the San Francisco Art Institute; he worked as an assistant to Dorothea Lange and collaborated with Robert Frank on two films. Gibson has had a lifelong fascination with books and book making; since the 1970 publication of The Somnambulist\, his work has been steadily impelled toward the printed page\, with at least forty monographs issued. \nGibson’s photographs are included in more than 180 museum collections around the world and have appeared in hundreds of one-person exhibitions. He has lectured and led workshops in more than twenty countries. In 2010 he collaborated with Lou Reed on the film Red Shirley\, which was screened in festivals in Europe and North America. Gibson’s awards include fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts\, as well as the Leica Medal of Excellence and a Leica Hall of Fame Award\, a Lucie Achievement Award\, and the Silver Plumb Award. A Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur\, he holds honorary doctorates from Ohio Wesleyan University and the University of Maryland. In 2019 he was elected to the International Photography Hall of Fame. The Gibson | Goeun Museum of Photography\, which opened in Busan\, South Korea\, in 2022 and houses more than a thousand original prints\, is the most comprehensive collection of the artist’s work in Asia.

Join today → \nAbout Sean Scully\nSean Scully’s (Irish\, b. 1945) work is in the collection of virtually every major museum around the world. In 2014 he became the first Western artist to have a career-length retrospective in China. He was awarded the International Artist of the Year Prize in Hong Kong in 2018. His important solo exhibitions include Landline at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington\, D.C.\, which traveled to the Wadsworth Atheneum\, Hartford; Landline and Other Works\, De Pont Museum\, Tilburg\, Netherlands; Sea Star\, National Gallery\, London; the retrospective Vita Duplex\, Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe\, Germany; and a presentation of sculptures at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park\, England. Among other exhibitions are: Eleuthera\, new figurative paintings shown at the Albertina\, Vienna; the retrospective Long Light at the Villa e Collezione Panza\, Varese\, Italy; and Human\, paintings and sculptures presented at San Giorgio Maggiore for the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019. His first exhibition in central Europe\, Passenger\, at the Hungarian National Gallery\, Budapest\, traveled to the Benaki Museum\, Athens\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art\, Zagreb. \nA fifty-year career retrospective\, Sean Scully: The Shape of Ideas\, was organized and shown at the Philadelphia Museum of Art  and traveled to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth\, his exhibitions have included Material World\, Thorvaldsens Museum\, Copenhagen; Painting and Sculpture\, Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej\, Toruń\, Poland; Song of Color\, Langen Foundation\, Neuss\, Germany; and A Wound in a Dance with Love\, Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n$20 Adults & Resident Benefits PassHolder | $10 Members | $18 Seniors | Free for Students & Children \nAs we celebrate the installment of FRESH PAINT featuring Derrick Adams’ work on view in the Creativity Lounge\, join us for a conversation in the Lichtenstein Theater with artist Derrick Adams\, Folasade Ologundudu\, who was commissioned to write the text that accompanies Adams’ work\, and Mónica Ramírez-Montagut\, Ph.D.\, Executive Director of the Parrish. \nFRESH PAINT spotlights the latest works by both emerging and established artists\, fostering a direct response to contemporary issues and cultural movements\, on a rotating basis. FRESH PAINT is a collaboration with the FLAG Art Foundation and is accompanied by educational initiatives\, including ARTscope\, a teen council program offering participants a comprehensive exploration of the visual arts\, career pathways\, and practical experience in museum operations. \nAbout Derrick Adams\nDerrick Adams is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Brooklyn\, New York. Adams’ work celebrates and expands the dialogue around contemporary Black life and culture through scenes of normalcy and perseverance. \nDerrick Adams received his BFA from Pratt Institute\, New York\, in 1996 and graduated with an MFA from Columbia University\, New York\, in 2003. In addition to his critically acclaimed art practice\, Adams has held numerous teaching positions and is currently a tenured assistant professor in the School of Visual\, Media and Performing Arts at CUNY Brooklyn College. He also holds an honorary doctorate from Maryland Institute College of Art. \nIn 2022\, Adams established Charm City Cultural Cultivation\, a non-profit organization to support and encourage underserved communities in the city of Baltimore through events conducted by three entities: The Last Resort Artist Retreat\, a residency program that subscribes to the concept of leisure as therapy for the Black creative; The Black Baltimore Digital Database\, a collaborative counter-institutional space for collecting\, storing\, and safekeeping the data of local archival initiatives; and Zora’s Den\, an online community of Black women writers started in January 2017\, which has since expanded to in-person writing workshops\, a writers’ circle\, and a monthly reading series that strive to promote instruction\, support\, and social engagement. \nAbout Folasade Ologundudu\nFolasade Ologundudu is an independent producer\, writer\, curator\, and multidisciplinary artist based in New York. Her practice seeks to uncover ideas related to the universal human condition through text-based work\, photography\, and film. She has written art criticism\, profiles\, interviews\, and essays for ArtForum\, ARTnews\, Cultured Magazine\, Sculpture Magazine\, and Frieze\, among other publications. Ologundudu is also the founder of Light Work\, a creative media platform rooted at the intersection of art\, education\, and culture. Through her podcast\, Everything Is Connected\, she holds conversations with artists\, curators\, and entrepreneurs deeply rooted in visual arts and community building. \nFriday Nights are made possible by The Corcoran Group.
