SUMMARY:Film & Talk | Decoy by Michael Blackwood
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n$15 | Adults \n$5 | Members and Students with ID \nDecoy\n1972\, 18 minutes\nDirector: Michael Blackwood\nShown in conjunction with the current exhibition An Art of Changes: Jasper Johns Prints\, 1960 – 2018\, this short documentary explores how Jasper Johns created Decoy—a series of paintings and prints\, one of which is featured in this exhibition—and how it is rooted inside the notions of reproduction\, transformation\, and memory. \nBelieving that an image gains new meaning each time it is presented\, Johns boldly confronts his own past work\, most notably Ale Cans (1964)\, and uses Decoy as a method of metamorphosis. The repetition of certain motifs allows Johns to confront the change an image goes through when approached from a different angle or placed in a new artistic context. As he notes in the film\, “each time a motif is used and reused additional memories accrue\, new layers of meaning\, and the image itself begins to acquire its own history.” It is through Johns’s reimagining that the items he features in his work take on new life and grow from object to art\, thus redirecting society’s interpretation. \nDiscussion to follow with Alicia G. Longwell\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education and Lorena Salcedo-Watson\, Artist\, Master Printer\, Lecturer and Undergraduate Director\, Stony Brook University in the Lichtenstein Theater. \nLorena Salcedo-Watson | Artist\, Master Printer\, Lecturer and Undergraduate Director\, Stony Brook\nUniversity \nLorena Salcedo-Watson is an artist and master printmaker whose work consists of large-scale drawings and prints focused on the relationships between the structures and essential qualities of life forms. Based on a fascination with human anatomy\, botany\, and entomology\, her imagery transforms and re-interprets aspects of nature\, filtering through personal experience\, observation\, and imagination. \nAs an educator\, Salcedo-Watson taught intaglio printmaking at Cooper Union for seven years and was on the faculty of St. Joseph’s College. Salcedo-Watson worked at Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) for fourteen years as a master printer and collaborator. Salcedo-Watson has worked with artists including Elizabeth Murray\, Terry Winters\, Jasper Johns\, Robert Rauschenberg\, James Rosenquist\, Kiki Smith\, Suzanne McClelland\, Carroll Dunham\, Susan Rothenberg\, Julian Lethbridge\, Jane Hammond\, Lisa Yuskavage\, Ellen Gallagher\, and Malcolm Morley. \n  \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. Limited tickets will be available at the door.\nAll sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable. \nAttendees at events in the Museum’s theater\, café\, or studio (ages 5 and older) are required to provide proof of full vaccination in order to maintain a mask-optional environment. Visitors to the Museum galleries (ages 2 and older) are required to wear a medical-grade mask at all times\, regardless of vaccination status. \nMore information surrounding our COVID-19 protocol → \nFriday Nights are made possible\, in part\, by Presenting Sponsor: \n \nAdditional support provided by Weill Cornell Medicine – Southampton and The Corcoran Group

SUMMARY:Talk | Skin in the Game
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nIn the Lichtenstein Theater \nConversation 1/3 of a lunchtime talk series by Alicia Longwell on Jasper Johns \nThursday\, June 23: Mr. Johns Regrets | Learn more→ \nThursday\, June 30: Stars & Stripes | Learn more→ \n  \nIn a series of three informal lunchtime talks in conjunction with the exhibition\, An Art of Changes: Jasper Johns Prints\, 1960–2018\, Alicia G. Longwell\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator will discuss Jasper Johns and three common themes explored by the artist throughout his career. \nDuring the 1960s\, Johns experimented with unusual tools for making marks on his canvases and drawings. They included his own body\, which he used to make imprints—a more direct way of adding his “touch” to an artwork than traditional means such as brush or pencil. The unusual self-portrait Skin with O’Hara Poem is a literal impression of the artist\, rather than a painted likeness. \nGuests are invited to preorder lunch through the Café at the Parrish and enjoy it in the Theater. Special Offer: Receive a free regular coffee with any Café purchase or receive a free bag of chips with the purchase of a salad or sandwich. Outside food is not permitted in the Museum. \nOrder 0nline → \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. \n More information surrounding our COVID-19 protocol →

SUMMARY:Members Reception | Set It Off
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nSet It Off brings together over 50 works—many new or never-before-seen—by an international roster of female artists who engage the monumental\, the site-specific\, or the immersive in their practice. Inspired by the architecture and setting of the Museum\, the curators embraced the opportunity to consider the ways artists use and manipulate space to explore identity and place today. \nDyson and Rasheed employ minimalism and the grid to explore how intellectual\, environmental\, and architectural infrastructures are perceived and negotiated. James and Babirye create figurative work that examines personal and collective histories in relation to identity. Olivier and Yanko make monumentally scaled works that manipulate everyday objects and materials to activate history and memory. \n  \nNot a member but want to attend? DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n  \n6 to 6:30 PM | Conversation and Q & A in the Lichtenstein Theater with Alicia G. Longwell\, Ph.D.\, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator\, Art and Education and Larissa Goldston\, Director of Universal Limited Art Editions \n7 PM | Remarks & Toast \n  \nOrganized in four thematic sections\, An Art of Changes follows Jasper Johns (American\, born 1930) through the years as he revises and recycles key motifs\, including the American flag\, numerals\, and the English alphabet\, which he describes as “things the mind already knows.” Some works explore the artist’s tools\, materials\, and techniques. Others delve into signature aspects of his distinctive mark-making\, including flagstones and hatch marks\, while later pieces teem with autobiographical imagery. The prints will be augmented by a small selection of paintings and sculptures\, underscoring Johns’s fascination with the changes that occur when an image is reworked in another medium. \n  \nNot a member but want to attend? SUMMARY:Online Talk | Donna de Salvo and Dorothy Lichtenstein: Roy Lichtenstein and Pop Art Before and After the Dots
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nTune into the lively conversation that took place six months ago in conjunction with the exhibition Roy Lichtenstein: History in the Making\, 1948-1960\, on view at the Museum\, August 1–October 24\, 2021. \nDorothy Lichtenstein\, former director of the pioneering Paul Bianchini Gallery\, New York\, and who worked closely with many of the Pop artists\, was joined in conversation with Donna De Salvo\, Senior Adjunct Curator\, Dia Art Foundation\, and Curator of Hand-Painted Pop: American Art in Transition\, 1955-1962\, about this legendary artist and pivotal period in art in the United States. \nOne of the progenitors of Pop Art\, Roy Lichtenstein’s work of the 1950s reveals much about the preoccupations of a younger generation of artists in the post-war U.S. as they attempted to work their way through and out of the shadows of Abstract Expressionism. Lichtenstein’s wide-ranging explorations of subject matter and form would lead to his groundbreaking Pop paintings\, first shown in New York in 1962\, ushering in a new attitude towards art from which there was no turning back. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. Limited tickets will be available at the door.\nAll sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable. \nThis indoor event requires proof of full vaccination for all attendees ages 5 and older in order to maintain a mask-optional environment; those 18 and older must provide a valid ID. SUMMARY:Talk | peter campus\, Virginia Jaramillo\, and John Torreano
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special conversation with three seminal East End artists at the height of their creative powers\, featured in solo exhibitions this fall. Chief Curator Alicia Longwell will talk with peter campus\, Virginia Jaramillo\, and John Torreano about their decades-long careers and how their practices intersect.\nABOUT PETER CAMPUS \npeter campus (American\, b. New York\, New York 1937) is a seminal artist in the canons of new media and video art. In a solitary pursuit over the past year\, campus positioned his camera around the shores of Shinnecock Bay\, not far from his home in Patchogue\, NY. The resulting six works\, all to be shown in the exhibition\, invite the viewer to meditate on the sublime beauty of the natural landscape\, while noting the gap between what we perceive\, what the camera records\, and what the artist brings to the fore in the video. \nABOUT VIRGINIA JARAMILLO \nA pioneering minimalist whose career has spanned six decades\, Virginia Jaramillo (American\, b. El Paso\, Texas\, 1939) creates work from sources that span history and cross cultures. The exhibition brings together never before seen paintings and drawings completed in her Hampton Bays studio over the past two years. Harmony between Line and Space features two 12-foot canvases\, Quantum Entanglement and Quanta\, in which expansive fields of color are crisscrossed by impossibly uniform razor-thin lines. “The color field was not negative space\,” notes Jaramillo\, “but a space filled with life and possibilities.” \nABOUT JOHN TORREANO \nWith the universe as his muse\, New York and Sag Harbor-based artist John Torreano (American\, b. Flint\, Michigan\, 1941) combines realism infused with abstraction to create works that conflate time and space. Often mapping out ideas on paper first and expanding in paintings\, Torreano has been inspired by the myriad images recorded by the Hubble Space Telescope to create works that contrast the physical with the illusory. \n  \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended. Limited tickets will be available at the door. All sales are final\, non-transferable\, and non-refundable.\nThis indoor event requires all attendees to wear medical-grade masks at all times and show proof of vaccination; those 18 and older must provide a valid ID. To help us expedite the check-in process\, we encourage all guests to send their proof in advance by emailing it to healthfirst@parrishart.org. Please put the event title in your subject line.\nFor more information surrounding our COVID-19 protocol\, go here.\nFriday Nights are made possible\, in part\, by Presenting Sponsor:\n\nAdditional support provided by The Corcoran Group and Sandy and Stephen Perlbinder.
