Sacks will lead meditation classes Friday mornings Oct. 8-29 for Parrish Members\, and up to 1 guest\, incorporating current exhibits into the Meditation for a deeper experience of both. No prior meditation experience necessary. \nThis event is private begins before the Museum opens. You must register in advance for each class in the series. Space is limited. Members are limited to 1 guest per class. \nABOUT JULIE SACKS \nJulie Sacks is a Bespoke Meditation Guide who connects authentically with those seeking to achieve personal growth through empowering meditation experiences. How do colors and forms express feelings? Is the energy subdued\, aggressive\, or excited? What does abstraction really mean? We’ll think about all of this\, as well as materials and how to use them\, and the art theories that apply.\n\n  \nOpen to beginners to experienced. The Museum will supply materials.\n\n\nThese indoor events require all attendees to show proof of vaccination (vaccine card/Excelsior Pass) or a negative PCR test within 72 hours. DESCRIPTION:  \nJustin Beal will discuss his new book\, Sandfuture\, an account of the life and work of the architect Minoru Yamasaki with Yamasaki’s granddaughter\, the muralist and children’s book author\, Katie Yamasaki. \nSandfuture is also a book about an artist interrogating art and architecture’s role in culture as New York changes drastically after a decade bracketed by terrorism and natural disaster. From the central thread of Yamasaki’s life\, Sandfuture spirals outward to include reflections on a wide range of subjects\, from the figure of the architect in literature and film and transformations in the contemporary art market to the perils of sick buildings and the broader social and political implications of how\, and for whom\, cities are built. \nABOUT JUSTIN BEAL \nJustin Beal is an artist with an extensive exhibition history in the United States and Europe. Beal graduated from Yale University with a degree in architecture and design and continued his studies at the Whitney Independent Study Program and the University of Southern California. His work has been reviewed in the New York Times\, the New Yorker\, Artforum\, Frieze\, Art in America\, Interview\, and the Los Angeles Times and is included in the permanent collections of the Albright Knox Museum\, the Hammer Museum\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles. Beal currently teaches at Hunter College. \nABOUT KATIE YAMASAKI \nKatie Yamasaki is a muralist and children’s book artist. She has painted over 80 murals with diverse communities around the world that explore local issues of social justice. Her children’s books focus on stories from underrepresented communities. Yamasaki co-authored Everything Naomi Loved\, with Ian Lendler for Norton Young Readers\, about facing the hard changes of gentrification. When the Cousins Came and Fish for Jimmy recount personal family stories about the internment camps of WWII and growing up in a multi-racial family. Yamasaki earned her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in NYC\, where she served on the faculty for several years. She worked for 14 years as a public school Spanish and Art teacher in both the Detroit and NYC public schools. \nAdvance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is required. All tickets are sold pre-event and online only. No sales at the door.
